I don’t think so, but someone today acted totally shocked when I told them how many hot drinks I have a day.

On a workday, I’d usually have:

  • 2 or 3 cups of coffee before I set off in the morning; depends how early I get up.
  • 3 or 4 cups of tea at work spaced through the day - one when I first get in, one mid morning, one at lunch and sometimes one mid afternoon depending on how late I take my lunch
  • A cup of tea when I get in from work
  • Sometimes a cup of Horlicks or chocolate before bed.

Seeing it written down now, I acknowledge it’s not a small amount but surely not enough to warrant a literal “Oh my God!” response?

are you trying to fill yourself up with liquid rather than food?

how often do you wee in the night?

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 12/04/2024 14:52

Sounds ok to me!

Lincslady53 · 12/04/2024 14:55

Sounds about normal to me. On a giod day, I would have a tea then a coffee before leaving for work, a brew in arrival, another at around 11.00. Tea with lunch at 1.00ish, tea at 3.00 ish. Then a tea after my evening meal at 7.00ish. Occasionally a drink before bed, but not often.

No, I usually don’t have breakfast but eat a normal lunch and dinner. I’m not one to regularly weigh myself but I reckon I must be a healthy weight or not far off?

And mostly I don’t get up in the night… if I do on the odd occasion it’ll be once per night? I go maybe 4/5 times in the day?

It's just the 2 or 3 cups of coffee before work that I'd maybe raise an eyebrow to. The rest is normal I'd say.

tuliplav · 12/04/2024 14:56

do you live alone?
if not, has your partner ever commented?

you sleep well?

Mrsttcno1 · 12/04/2024 14:56

Well for reference I think they say 400mg per day is the max “safe” amount of caffeine for a typical healthy adult.

An average cup of coffee is around 80-100mg.

An average cup of tea is around 50mg.

So if in your average day you’re having 3 coffees and 5 teas you could be consuming way over the recommended caffeine each day and I would say that’s a “oh my god” amount to be honest yes.

Feebs450 · 12/04/2024 14:57

It sounds like a lot of individual drinks but caffeine wise I probably have more.

I 'only' have three coffees a day and then lots of water - but my favourite coffee mug is like a small bucket 😂 so it's provably more like 6 actual cups of coffee.

bradpittsbathwater · 12/04/2024 14:57

Sounds like a lot to me. I'd be up all night but I'm super sensitive to caffeine. I had to drastically decrease my intake to 1 or 2 cups a day as it was also causing restless legs at night.

fieldsofbutterflies · 12/04/2024 14:58

I'd be peeing constantly if I had that much tea and coffee in a day!

Thingsthatgo · 12/04/2024 15:01

Do you drink instant coffee or cafetière/filtered? I think there is quite a difference in the caffeine content.

BingoMarieHeeler · 12/04/2024 15:03

That’s way too much for ME - I would be an anxious mess. If it’s fine for you, it’s fine??

Side note, hot drinks ≠ caffeine though. I’ve lately switched to decaf tea as well as decaf coffee - always thought decaf tea was rank but Yorkshire is the key I find. I have 1 or 2 normal teas and 1 normal coffee, and then total free rein on the decafs throughout the day. Obviously they do still have trace caffeine in.

I'd be peeing constantly if I had that much tea and coffee in a day!

I'd also be shitting through the eye of a needle with that much coffee in the morning!

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 12/04/2024 15:09

2 or 3 coffees before work sounds normal to me. I can down the first 2 very quickly 3rd is a travel mug.

coxesorangepippin · 12/04/2024 15:11

It's a lot but I'm the same, so meh

Tanaqui · 12/04/2024 15:12

Well I don't drink coffee and I often have 7 or 8 cups of tea before lunchtime! Then I swap to herbal or rooibos, but I can do caffeinated all afternoon with no noticeable effects on sleep!

CharlieCoCo · 12/04/2024 15:14

the amount of coffee you have before work made me think it was a lot, but i guess it depends how long you are up for befroe you go to work. 3 cups in half an hour is a bit much, if you are someone who needs to be up 2 hours before leaving, not so bad. but even so, if you arent ill from it, drink what you want.

bradpittsbathwater · 12/04/2024 15:14

Wow I'm in aww of the posters who can chug all that caffeine with no noticeable side effects.

Createausername1970 · 12/04/2024 15:15

I rarely drink coffee, but I reckon I get through 8 mugs of tea in an average day so it wouldn't bother me.

My OMG would be 3 cups before you leave home in the morning. My bladder is not as obedient as it once was, and if I need to go, then I need to go. So i would always have a drink before I left home, but just the one.

bradpittsbathwater · 12/04/2024 15:15

Awe*

Stickyricepudding · 12/04/2024 15:16

I have one caffeinated coffee a day and then the rest is decaff coffee & tea as I'm peri menopausal so my sleep is chaotic atm. You cn buy half caffeine ground coffee from Sainsburys to reduce your dependency on coffee.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 12/04/2024 15:17

I don't drink coffee but usually have quite a lot of tea.

1 when I get up
1 when I get to work
1 mid morning
1 at lunch
1 mid afternoon
1 late afternoon
1 when I get home from work

I then switch to decaf.

SallyWD · 12/04/2024 15:22

So that's about 8 caffeinated drinks a day. I do think it's a lot. I have 3 caffeinated drinks a day. I'm constantly drinking tea and coffee but decaf.

Sparklfairy · 12/04/2024 15:23

Wow I'm in aww of the posters who can chug all that caffeine with no noticeable side effects.

No side effects here, but I started young (mid-teens) so probably hardened to it now Grin

I have at least 3-4 coffees before work. Sometimes I don't drink it for the rest of the day, sometimes I drink 6-8 total.

Mandarinaduck · 12/04/2024 15:24

Sounds totally normal to me.
