I don’t think so, but someone today acted totally shocked when I told them how many hot drinks I have a day.

On a workday, I’d usually have:

  • 2 or 3 cups of coffee before I set off in the morning; depends how early I get up.
  • 3 or 4 cups of tea at work spaced through the day - one when I first get in, one mid morning, one at lunch and sometimes one mid afternoon depending on how late I take my lunch
  • A cup of tea when I get in from work
  • Sometimes a cup of Horlicks or chocolate before bed.

Seeing it written down now, I acknowledge it’s not a small amount but surely not enough to warrant a literal “Oh my God!” response?

That number of drinks spread throughout an entire day it is about the same as me, although I do switch to decaf in the evenings otherwise it can keep me awake.

But I don't have to drink three coffees one after the other to get going in the morning, and that is probably overdoing the caffeine over a short period of time.

pelotonaddiction · 12/04/2024 15:25

I have 5 big mugs of tea a day at least, I do make sure 1-2 are decaf though
Sometimes can be more

TraceyTheHamster · 12/04/2024 15:28

Just the clarify - the morning coffees aren’t all being chugged one after the other. I’ll tend to get up at about an hour and half before I leave for work - so it’s spread across that time!

They'd be horrified at me then. I drink 25+ teas and coffees a day. What you have is a normal amount for alot of people I reckon. I have had days where I've reached 30 easily. I pretty much run on caffeine 😁

Saintmariesleuth · 12/04/2024 15:29

I think it is a high amount of caffeine OP

I'm not judging, I don't drink coffee, but in terms of tea I can get through the same amount of hot drinks per day as you if I'm based in the office.

I have found that swapping in some non caffeinated herbal teas, such as peppermint, can help me cut down as I still get the 'feeling' of hot drink (and improves hydration)

Wow I'd be on the toilet all day. I'm
Super sensitive to caffeine though.

Well for reference I think they say 400mg per day is the max “safe” amount of caffeine for a typical healthy adult.

An average cup of coffee is around 80-100mg.

An average cup of tea is around 50mg.

So if in your average day you’re having 3 coffees and 5 teas you could be consuming way over the recommended caffeine each day and I would say that’s a “oh my god” amount to be honest yes.

It’s only about 90mg over isn’t it? And it depends how strong the tea and coffee are.

I don't seem to be on the toilet as much as you'd think I would really. Ive been drinking that much caffeine since I was a teen 🤣

TraceyTheHamster · 12/04/2024 15:37

Also - to answer a couple of PPs: it’s filter coffee in the morn.

What sort of coffee is that though do you know, or doesn't it matter? I only really drink the instant stuff.

You must have a bladder like a camel!

Xmasbaby11 · 12/04/2024 15:44

Sounds at the high end of normal but all that matters is the effect on you - you feel fine so I wouldn’t worry.

I still can’t work out how you fit three in. How long does it take to make, cool and drink a coffee: 20minutes? So ten minutes after finishing a coffee you’re making another coffee?

I like it milky so no need to wait for it to cool really.

i have one when I very first get up, one with breakfast and sometimes one just before I leave.

I drink at least eight large mugs of tea every day, often more, and usually two or three Diet Cokes.

I don't understand why this would be a problem. I pretty much just have a tea on the go all the time. At work I've got two mugs, so if I'm in the middle of a cuppa when someone else offers to do a tea round, I don't have to decline another one and will be able to have another tea waiting when I finish the current one.

I didn’t say it was a problem. I just couldn’t work out how to fit them in the timeframe.

3 diet cokes a day though…. I would say that is a problem…

This is me! I have caffeinated drinks late in the day too- like 11pm- and have no problem falling straight to sleep afterwards. I have been drinking tea since I was a child.

I have read speculation that people with ADHD are affected differently by caffeine and although I do not have a diagnosis, I have good reason to suspect I have ADHD.

Tassen · 12/04/2024 16:51

I drink the same amount in the day @TraceyTheHamster & I have a cast iron bladder.

I can have a cup of coffee at bedtime & I'll still be out like a light.

@Waitingfordoggo I have an ADHD referral.
So perhaps it is an ADHD thing, as if you think about it caffeine is a stimulant just like ADHD meds are

Dacadactyl · 12/04/2024 16:52

I can EASILY put away that many coffees and teas each day.

I'd like to cut down but I'd be too tired.

Auburngal · 12/04/2024 16:55

It's the toddlers in pushchairs I see drinking cans of RB and Monster! WIFW with these idiotic parents?

Auburngal · 12/04/2024 16:58

Got to have a very strong coffee in the mornings. Especially when 3 of my 5 shifts in the week I now start at 7am. Before then, it was just 1 a week.

Bring my own coffee to work as the vending machine coffee is weak. The previous machine, you could change strength of coffee and milk.
