To ask if this is an excessive amount of caffine?

I don’t think so, but someone today acted totally shocked when I told them how many hot drinks I have a day.

On a workday, I’d usually have:

  • 2 or 3 cups of coffee before I set off in the morning; depends how early I get up.
  • 3 or 4 cups of tea at work spaced through the day - one when I first get in, one mid morning, one at lunch and sometimes one mid afternoon depending on how late I take my lunch
  • A cup of tea when I get in from work
  • Sometimes a cup of Horlicks or chocolate before bed.

Seeing it written down now, I acknowledge it’s not a small amount but surely not enough to warrant a literal “Oh my God!” response?

Sounds average to me.

I don't think Horlicks has caffeine in it 🤔

Stressybetty · 12/04/2024 17:17

On a career break but probably 6-7 cups of tea a day. Usually a can of coke or pepsi max late afternoon too.

Sharptonguedwoman · 12/04/2024 17:22

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

needsomewarmsunshine · 12/04/2024 17:43

Maybe I'm unusual but caffeine doesn't affect me in that respect. I don't get a lift from any type of coffee or tea so I drink about 10 cups of either through the day.
Surprised at the response you got though OP

Since I have been doing earlier shifts - go home and have a Sneak Energy drink. Which is in powder form make up with water and shake.

Don’t like the smell of original RB or Monster. It’s gross

I drink the same amount in the day @TraceyTheHamster & I have a cast iron bladder.

I can have a cup of coffee at bedtime & I'll still be out like a light.

@Waitingfordoggo I have an ADHD referral.
So perhaps it is an ADHD thing, as if you think about it caffeine is a stimulant just like ADHD meds are

Yes, I think that’s what I’ve read about it before- that for some people with ADHD, caffeine does not act as a stimulant as it does for most people. It’s one of the things (among many!) that have made me wonder if I might have it. I have a family member who has a diagnosis, and my DD is having an assessment in a couple of weeks.

I didn’t say it was a problem. I just couldn’t work out how to fit them in the timeframe.

3 diet cokes a day though…. I would say that is a problem…

I meant ‘Why would it be a problem to manage to fit them in’ not ‘Why would it be a problem for one’s health’.

I didn’t ask for any verdict on my Diet Coke consumption, but it is not, for me, ‘a problem’. It’s a problem for people who are sensitive to aspartame or prone to bloating, but I’m neither of those things. (Contrary to the myths, there is no medical evidence that aspartame causes cancer or insulin spikes.)

SwordToFlamethrower · 12/04/2024 23:00

For me, that is an insane amount of coffee. 1 is my usual, 2 max.

Anymore than that and I'd have the shakes

Devilsmommy · 12/04/2024 17:09

Probably best not thought about 😳🤣🤣🤣🤣

are you ever even hungry @Devilsmommy if your drinking 30 cups a day

and you must not work? rarely go out? that’s 10 in the morning 10 in the after and 10 in the evening… so most of the time in your kitchen making and then drinking tea?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 13/04/2024 07:35

It's quite a bit more than I have, but I'd have thought it was definitely within the bounds of normal caffeine intake. I don't drink coffee and I have 2 or 3 cups of tea a day.

Yes I get hungry though my appetite never came back after I had my DS. It doesn't take that long to make a tea or coffee 😉 and yes I'm a sahm but even if we go out I always have a coffee or 5🤣

SevenSeasOfRhye · 13/04/2024 10:54

I used to have similar but I realised it was affecting my sleep so switched to decaf.

Shayisgreat · 13/04/2024 10:58

I used to drink around that (and sometimes more) in my 20s and early 30s but in the last couple of years that would be too much for me. If you're feeling good then continue with it! I'd be more worried if you were putting sugar in each cup as then you'd basically be running on sugar!

ShortLivedComment · 13/04/2024 11:11

There is a big difference in the amount of caffeine in different coffees. Out of curiosity I'd find out how much you actually consume rather than guessing.

I saw a list of the amount of caffeine in coffees from different coffee again and some have loads more than others

You seem a bit irritable. Might be all the Diet Cokes… 🙃
