What a total wanker. And slandering Ines? Fucker.

Yea not many people are going to get this generally MN is anti TS.

HermioneWeasley · 11/04/2024 14:30

She didn’t - “cardigan” makes clear they had a long term relationship (but I agree, I wish she had told him to fuck off)

Zarahlovesthebeach · 11/04/2024 14:33

Can someone explain what this means please?

TheFlis · 11/04/2024 14:33

@HermioneWeasley They had a relationship but then he cheated on her over the summer break. Betty and Cardigan both end with James going to try and get her back but we never find out if she accepts.

TheFlis · 11/04/2024 14:35

@Zarahlovesthebeach It’s about a love triangle played out in 3 songs on the Taylor Swift Folklore album, each song narrates the story of one of the 3 people without explicitly saying so. They are very cleverly written.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/04/2024 14:38

I have no idea what we’re talking about but I’m siding with Betty and think she looks stunning in her new cardigan.

KreedKafer · 11/04/2024 14:39

I see Mumsnetters are still doing that 'Let's post something cryptic that only certain people will understand so we can feel important and exclusive like the mean girls at school' thing, then.

HermioneWeasley · 11/04/2024 14:39

@TheFlis my bad - it’s not clear from the song, but in Folklore - the long ponds sessions (on Disney and very charming if you haven’t seen it) she confirms they get back together

RadoxMoon · 11/04/2024 14:40

I thought this was going to be about the brother and sister on Race Across The World

Oooh I will look those up. Thank you.

Crikey, I didn't know this 😧 I'm a massive TS fan (I'm obsessed and still pinching myself that I'm going to one of her Edinburgh shows in the summer!) but I've just read an article explaining the love triangle songs.

I'm choosing to blame the fact that I'm autistic and miss 99% of subtext. At school, my poor English teacher had a terrible time trying to make me understand that poems aren't saying what they're saying, and clearly it hasn't improved for me since 2005 😅

Needmorelego · 11/04/2024 14:46

Aren't those the names of Blake Liveys daughters?

amusedbush · 11/04/2024 14:48

Needmorelego · 11/04/2024 14:46

Yes, they are friends. The song mentions Betty, James, and Ines.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the Ines part in the OP!

Needmorelego · 11/04/2024 14:52

@amusedbush well that makes the OP seem weirder - because they're all just little girls.
The eldest (James?) is what - 10?

I find poetry exhausting- prose that makes you work for it, nooooo!

My friend occasionally sends me links to poems have moved her but I just think “Could you have not just said ‘I love my cat’ 😆 Am total Philistine

@Needmorelego the song isn't about the kids though, it's about three fictional 17 year olds and TS just used their names.

Needmorelego · 11/04/2024 15:00

@amusedbush won't that be a bit awkward in a few years times when the girls are actually teens ?
(unrelated - I always feel sorry for James because I don't think her name seems right for a girl)

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 11/04/2024 15:02

I'm on Augustine's side in all of this tbh.

I do wonder if we'll get a resolution to the story in TTPD...

TheFlis · 11/04/2024 15:03

@Needmorelego Yes there were lots of memes about Ines being slated as a gossip when it came out. In fact, Blake and Ryan hadn’t actually publicly said what Ines’s name was and Taylor accidentally outed it at an awards ceremony when she was talking about the songs!

DutchHouse · 11/04/2024 15:03

God I love those songs. All of them. So many great lines… “Leaving like a father, running like water” and “I knew you haunt all of my what if’s”… just a couple of favourites!

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 11/04/2024 15:18

Oddly, they're probably my least favourite songs on the album. I mean, they're clever and beautiful (obvs) but they'd be bottom of my Folklore list.

Seven, Peace, TLGAD, Exile, This Is Me Trying....oh it's just SUCH a great piece of work!

I have never felt more out of touch with popular culture than when reading this post.
