Nails cost ridiculous?

Questions124 · 24/03/2024 09:36

I never get my nails done. I found a place right near my house and had a pedicure and manicure. Gel polish. Cost me £84! It’s my real nails no acrylics etc. surely this is too much? I just looked at another salon and it would have cost me £50 for same treatment. Why is this so much? Is this a quality thing such as if I go to the cheaper place will I be able to tell it’s cheaper or does it not matter?

looking at my nails I feel guilty getting them done. Nearly £90 is too much, that’s a weekly shop I could have done.

Well for a pedicure and manicure that seems fine. I get my nails done once a year before holiday and it's about £45 just for manicure.

Concannon88 · 24/03/2024 17:20

Something being out of your price range, or not being able to afford something isn't the same as something being too expensive or a rip off. Nail techs on average earn £7 an hour, so less than minimum wage, and I think you'll fine the pricing structure of the nail industry is changing and prices will be going up to reflect self employed technicians hidden expenses.

RiderofRohan · 24/03/2024 17:34

I've realised it's just not worth it. Prices are getting ridiculous.

From someone who used to get their nails done every three weeks, I've just decided to save the money and do it myself. It just isn't important enough and so a waste in my opinion

Fluffyblobs · 24/03/2024 17:51

Gel and builder on real nails £38 currently

Greenfluffycardi · 24/03/2024 17:55

I do mine myself. That’s ridiculous. My daughter gets acrylics and it’s £40 for a new set of coloured acrylic and £35 for a full set with gel polish.

Cornflakelover · 24/03/2024 18:15

I pay 40 for a full set of acrylic
infills 25 -30
full pedicure with gel is 38

I get my nails infilled most weeks /10days
pedicure every month

Cherry8809 · 24/03/2024 18:25

I get a pedicure with gel polish, and acrylics with quite elaborate designs. They charge £70 for a new set, or £40 for infills.

I find that to be really reasonable, given the intricacy of the designs I ask for and how much time it takes to do them.

I wouldn’t be happy about paying £84 for a standard gel colour.

FrangipaniBlue · 24/03/2024 18:26

The thing with nails though is that I think you absolutely get what you pay for.

I could go to most salons near me and pay £25-£30 for a 60 minutes appointment, infills and an all over colour.

But the girl I use charges me £40 because I have nail art and it takes her 2 hours.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/03/2024 18:29

Seems reasonable to me. I pay £85 for mani with gel removal and polish and a mini pedi with normal polish.

Loafbeginsat60 · 24/03/2024 19:06

I'd be £28 for fingers and £30 for toes at my normal nail salon

I go every 2-3 weeks and it's really my only treat as I have my hair done about 3 times a year.

£84 is wildly expensive but then I'm guessing you live in the South.

The 84 was for fingers and toes
Two treatments

If you had a full manicure and a full pedicure, rather than just having gel applied and nothing else done, then it's not hugely expensive.

Where I go (local place in Manchester) for gel application alone it's £28 for hands or feet, so for just the gel and nothing else it would be £56 for both hands and feet. But an actual manicure and pedicure, which include things like soaking the feet, a foot/hand scrub, hand/foot lotion applied with massage, cuticles trimmed etc, would be £40 each, so £80 (and if you had existing polish that had to be removed first, that would be an additional charge).

Yep, I pay £42 for a gel pedicure so sounds about right. That obviously includes cuticles, using a foot file, foot soak, massage with cream etc as well as the actual gel application.

I get my toenails done every six weeks throughout spring and summer when my feet are more likely to be on show in sandals and then stop over autumn and winter. I don't get fingernails done as they are a similar price but don't last as long as gel on my toes in my experience.

TM1979 · 25/03/2024 13:35

I get acrylics. €35 here in Ireland. The girl does them in her house.
I love having mine done but I wouldn’t pay any more than that.
