Nails cost ridiculous?

Questions124 · 24/03/2024 09:36

I never get my nails done. I found a place right near my house and had a pedicure and manicure. Gel polish. Cost me £84! It’s my real nails no acrylics etc. surely this is too much? I just looked at another salon and it would have cost me £50 for same treatment. Why is this so much? Is this a quality thing such as if I go to the cheaper place will I be able to tell it’s cheaper or does it not matter?

looking at my nails I feel guilty getting them done. Nearly £90 is too much, that’s a weekly shop I could have done.

So buy some nail polish and do it at home.

Agree. I wouldn't pay the better part of £100 for my own nails!

I use Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Polish. It lasts a week and costs a tenner for a bottle.

They've destroyed my nails, I loved the look of them but my nails are like paper now.

Don't use rice to take them off either, I wish I'd never bought them.

Oh no! That’s what I was worried about, though my nails have always been awful after the few times I’ve had gel nails done too. Well, I guess I’ll see in a week or so!

SofaSpuds · 24/03/2024 11:32

Did you not ask the price before you got it done? If it's too much for you either don't get your nails done, or find somewhere cheaper.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 24/03/2024 11:33

The 84 is for two treatments. So say 42 each.

Still quite high. Depends what their overheads are. But if you just had one treatment and paid 42 would it have been high enough to shock you enough to start a post?
I pay just over 30 for my nails. North West. Small professional salon

CrushingOnRubies · 24/03/2024 11:35

Recently moved and looking around for where to go in my new area. And they're all in the £25-£40 area. Average about £32

Ambi · 24/03/2024 11:37

I pay £25 for acrylics, gel colour and nail art every 3 weeks. Her prices are going up soon, not sure by how much? I paint my own toes though as the colour lasts for months. This what I have on at the moment.

Nails cost ridiculous?
bellamountain · 24/03/2024 11:38

I just do my own now, the Maybelline superstay 7 days is actually pretty good to be honest. Can also use stick on nails too. My nails are in much better condition now.

Picklestop · 24/03/2024 11:40

My pedicure is about £35-£40 depending on whether I keep the polish or not. I believe manicure is about the same but I never have a manicure.

Lemoncokezero · 24/03/2024 11:46

I get mine done by a nail tec who just works in her own in her studio. I have a custom had painted design plus removal that's £50 my appointment takes 2hrs. She doesn't use electric tools for removal and it's gel with my own nails.

If I get basic pedi so no nail art (I get that elsewhere) it's maybe 25 for painting only and 40 for a full scrub and treatments etc.

So I think I think depends what you get. It feels slightly pricey, if you just got a paint on the nails but the nail art and more of a treatment not so much.

WhatsitWiggle · 24/03/2024 11:46

A full mani/pedi with gel polish? Hand/Foot soak, cuticle work, massage. Normal prices near me (Sussex), and you'd be in the salon for up to 3 hours.

Or a quick file/shape with gel polish? Which would be closer to £50.

Talktometellmeyourname · 24/03/2024 11:46

It may seem expensive but you don’t know her outgoings. Rent/mortgage
insurance
product cost
heating
water
holiday pay
pension
sick pay
laundry cost
card machine commission
accountancy fees
national insurance
tax
cleaning fees
plus she needs to also earn a wage from that.
and whatever else I haven’t listed.
when I was a Nail tech, I wasn’t even hitting minimum wage.

daffodilandtulip · 24/03/2024 12:01

I use a mobile technician and it's £22-£30 depending on if it's new gel/infill/extra art/soak off. I imagine it's overheads bumping the price up.

Do you not check prices before having treatments?

LakieLady · 24/03/2024 13:05

DSD9472 · 24/03/2024 09:47

This is near me, South East.
Gelish Pedicure£24.00
Includes soak, file, buff, cuticle work, exfoliation, foot rasp, foot & leg massage & choice of colour
Gelish Manicure£17.00
Includes soak, file, buff, cuticle work, hand & arm massage & choice of colour

Some nail bars don't pay minimum wage, some have higher overheads like rent.

OP- was there not a price list to check beforehand?

That's incredibly cheap for a pedicure!

Cheapest where I live, also SE, is £48.

chuggachug · 24/03/2024 13:29

Salon or nail bar? Huge difference in price

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 24/03/2024 13:31

£36 for SNS, good for nail health too

DillDanding · 24/03/2024 13:35

Why do so few people do their own nails?

I’ve only ever had my nails done once, and that was for my wedding. I can do them far, far better myself. I do them about once every 10 days and they remain pretty perfect for all that time. No gels, just regular nail varnish. Really relaxing too.

Rainbowshit · 24/03/2024 13:36

I pay £33 for biab.

bradpittsbathwater · 24/03/2024 13:39

My DM's costs about £30 including removal. South London. £80 odd is a joke. I wouldn't pay that

bradpittsbathwater · 24/03/2024 13:39

Nails not DM's

bradpittsbathwater · 24/03/2024 13:39

For SNS

PinkiOcelot · 24/03/2024 13:41

I pay £26 for BIAB. How on earth can they justify that price?

Because would look like a 5 year old had done it if I tried myself. In fact a five year old might be better.

Mine chip within a day or so with normal crappy polish. It looks better done professionally too. I had a shellac kit but it was rubbish

Chooba · 24/03/2024 13:43

Pedicure and Manicure isn't the same as just getting your nails done though.
