Nails cost ridiculous?

Questions124 · 24/03/2024 09:36

I never get my nails done. I found a place right near my house and had a pedicure and manicure. Gel polish. Cost me £84! It’s my real nails no acrylics etc. surely this is too much? I just looked at another salon and it would have cost me £50 for same treatment. Why is this so much? Is this a quality thing such as if I go to the cheaper place will I be able to tell it’s cheaper or does it not matter?

looking at my nails I feel guilty getting them done. Nearly £90 is too much, that’s a weekly shop I could have done.

£25 here for gel removal & polish , can last 4 weeks , I get a luxury pedicure & gel polish twice a year and it’s £50

TheSnowyOwl · 24/03/2024 13:43

£35 here for BIAB.

MagentaRocks · 24/03/2024 13:44

I go to someone who is based in a hair salon. I have builder with gel on top, with designs and it costs less than £25, although her prices are going up slightly soon. There is a walk in place near there that is a lot more expensive and I wouldn’t be confident they would advise what is best for my nails. I know my nail tech will tell me if I need a full soak off or need to take a break from it.

Onceuponatimeiwasahoe · 24/03/2024 13:46

I get acrylics 28 and pedi is 32 both gel

Why do so few people do their own nails?

I’ve only ever had my nails done once, and that was for my wedding. I can do them far, far better myself. I do them about once every 10 days and they remain pretty perfect for all that time. No gels, just regular nail varnish. Really relaxing too.

I used to for years, but now I have creative nails with prints and patterns. I couldn't do that myself. If I was just having plain coloured polish I wouldn't pay someone.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/03/2024 13:50

I pay £22.50 for BIAB.

My DIL charges £35 but she lives too far from me for me to go to her, or I would, because her work is amazing.

Firawla · 24/03/2024 13:51

I pay about £70 for acrylics and pedicure, around every 3 weeks

My nails grow so far then split really far down. Rinse and repeat. With BIAB they’re much stronger and grow really long. They wouldn’t with just nail varnish. I wish they would though.

1daughterand3sons · 24/03/2024 15:38

I never get my nails done but DD asked me to book for an appointment to get hers done for a wedding I nearly fainted when she told me it's between £60-£70 I was going to pay for her nails but at that price she can pay herself.

dothehokeycokey · 24/03/2024 15:44

I had a similar experience recently.

Went for a tidy up and file as well as a gel Polish.

Not a manicure nor removal of previous and just one colour no nail art etc and it was £55 Shock

It is a lovely place using really good quality products and the beautician is a lovely lady with many years experience.
It wasn't rushed at all and stayed on really well for weeks until I soaked it off myself so have decided as a treat or if I'm going somewhere special I will definitely go but for a perk me up i bought a gel kit online at £35 with 30 odd colours and glitters and a lamp and I do them myself in between aswell.

With small businesses like these they need to charge higher because they aren't as quick or with as many staff to turn over enough to make much of a profit but sadly it's one of the luxuries in life for me and not a necessity so can't warrant it every two weeks

MillshakePickle · 24/03/2024 15:50

£84 seems around what I would pay in this end of Surrey. Some places are £78 for Bot but it can go upwards to £120 if ypu have added massages and oils used.

I rarely ever get them done. If I get my finger nails done a file and gel is £35. Full manicure £40 with gel.

SockHippo · 24/03/2024 16:00

The cost of living crisis hits beauticians too! What about their costs, all the equipment, gels etc would have increased. Quality products with the correct uv lamp are going to be expensive. If you’re happy with the service then great, don’t feel guilty. I bet there are plenty of cheaper nail techs out there, but I imagine you get what you pay for.

Viewfrommyhouse · 24/03/2024 16:03

I have a BIAB+polish done once every 3 weeks. Usually £35 a go.

Caspianberg · 24/03/2024 16:03

I do my own nails. Just Essie polish. Two coats colour, top coat. About €10 a bottle that lasts ages, I have a few colours. Lasts about 10 days. Generally just redo every Sunday as that’s when I have time.

I don’t think I would have time every 2 weeks to leave house and actually go to salon. They are all shut Sundays here

itsatail · 24/03/2024 16:06

I recently changed nail tech. Old one went up to £40 for acrylic and £30 infill. New one I get biab £22 a time. I would have loved to have stayed with original one but it was just out of my price range sadly.

juice92 · 24/03/2024 16:08

I pay £26 for biab gel infills and £31 when I we do soak off.At home salon, North West

Modern slavery is a real concern in Nail bars.

Same.here, except I mostly use Zoya polishes.

I have had a couple of gel manicures, and have always gone to a local beauty salon, prices similar to that OP. There a loads of nail bars near me, which are much cheaper, but I am not convinced about the way those young women are treated.

I'd imagine perhaps the replies are skewed it's a thread about cost of salon nails. It's not so few it's like 15 people. It's not going to be a representative sample with this question on op is it?

justasking111 · 24/03/2024 16:22

At my hairdresser I booked in for a Mani pedi no nail varnish just cutting and shaping. £60. I declined.

Sweetheart7 · 24/03/2024 16:27

£15 for gel on my toes any colour.

For my mani I make it last 4 weeks and I've started paying more as its OPI and no drills used. £35

You defo need to shop around.

CeriB82 · 24/03/2024 16:32

I pay £35 for BIAB & polish. I go every 3 weeks. No acrylics. She only does natural.

plenty of chinese nail bars around and they charge £40-50

Misthios · 24/03/2024 16:33

Well you paid it didn’t you so no, it’s not clearly too much.

Dweetfidilove · 24/03/2024 16:33

The mani/pedi will have hiked the price. If you go back just to replace your gel polish it will be cheaper.

It’s lovely just sitting and have someone do something for me for a change - nice break from the norm.
And they do them much better than I can.
