Is a size 14 fat?

bubblebutt88 · 15/03/2024 11:35

I know it's dependent on the individual and a lot of variables - height etc but generally speaking would you say it's 'fat?' I am a size 14, I don't think I'm huge but I have a big roll of fat around my belly (thanks c-section and pizza) and I do feel like my face looks a bit bloated at times.

I'm certainly not thin or toned but I wouldn't say I'm obese either. I know id look and feel better if I dropped a dress size but at this time in my life with young kids, a demanding job and lots going on I just can't find the energy to focus on weight loss.

What are your thoughts?

Absolutely depends on height. I'm 5ft. If I weigh over 9st 4, my bmi falls into the overweight category. At 9st 4, I fit in to a size 12 so for my height and that weight and wearing a size, I could be called fat. Great fun being the average height of an 11 year old child.

KateGate · 15/03/2024 12:25

when I was 17 and 8st I was called fat and chubby

you just cannot win no matter what you do, thank god DH likes me just the way I am

Everanewbie · 15/03/2024 12:26

Hi OP. 'Fat' is a subjective pejorative. I would avoid thinking in terms of fat, skinny, about right, and clothes sizing and if you are considering optimal health, instead look at fat percentage and BMI.

AccountantMum · 15/03/2024 12:26

A size 14 would usually be over the healthiest weight - unless you are very tall or prefer to wear clothes that are big for you.

Many women are a size 14 so I doubt people are looking at you thinking you are "huge"

Katrinawaves · 15/03/2024 12:27

I am 5’7” with a medium body frame.

At a size 14, my BMI just tips me into the obese range. My waist height ratio is also in the obese range and aesthetically I look overweight.

When I am in the normal BMI range (top end) I am comfortably a size 12 but to also get to the correct waist height ratio for my height (ie healthy not slender) I will be a size 10. That puts me around the middle of the BMI range.

So for me, with my body frame, a size 14 is fat and represents being between 2 and 3 stone overweight

Tel12 · 15/03/2024 12:27

Interesting question. I'm a size 14 and I have been for 50 years. Which could be good except that I'm a stone and a half heavier. Sizes have expanded along with the population. So I guess that the answer is yes.

DrJoanAllenby · 15/03/2024 12:28

Yes.

You're either obese or you aren't. You could be obese at size 14 if you're very short or healthy weight if you're very tall. I don't know what you mean by 'is size 14 fat'.

She said fat not obese. There's a difference between overweight and obese.

Cas112 · 15/03/2024 12:30

I wouldn't say the word fat but overweight yet

This is in relation to myself at size 14

doubleshotcappuccino · 15/03/2024 12:30

5 ft 11, size 8 shoe and a solid 14.. in younger years I've not been so comfortable with my body and been lower sizes and looked awful. I now workout most days and proud of my strong shoulders and height .. the size I am is so less important than being strong and well

samestyle · 15/03/2024 12:31

I'm 5'8 and size 14/16 BMI 30 I'm not just fat but Obese

Nonewclothes2024 · 15/03/2024 12:32

I'm 5ft 8 and a 14. I definitely feel fat.

KateGate · 15/03/2024 12:13

My DH also does not want me to lose weight as at my age it would mean saggy skin, older looking face and smaller boobs😁

Blimey. What a charmer. Never mind your health Darlin' just make sure you keep your body looking as young as you can for me...

Elektra1 · 15/03/2024 12:32

I'm 5'5" and when I was a size 14 (11 stone)I was in the "overweight" bracket (on those height/weight charts).

Most people are overweight or obese though so size 14 looks pretty normal these days. Also I think "look" depends a lot on where you carry weight. I carry it all around my middle so I looked a bit rotund.

MrsLeonFarrell · 15/03/2024 12:34

It's hard to know because size 14 doesn't really mean anything with all the varying sizing in shops these days.

Berlinlover · 15/03/2024 12:38

Yes it is.

Cazpar · 15/03/2024 12:40

Forget the clothes size, just look at your body.

If you have rolls of fat, you're definitely overweight.

Statistically people do tend to underestimate how overweight they are. A high percentage of the UKs adult population is obese.

If you're unsure, it would be good to weigh yourself properly and do a quick BMI calculation. It's a rough tool but it will give you a broad idea of where you sit.

Tilkyghg6366 · 15/03/2024 12:42

Not it definitely is not. I am a 14 with a healthy BMI

BobbyBiscuits · 15/03/2024 12:42

If you don't exercise much and have a bit of a belly then I guess you could be described as a bit fat. In the sense your body fat is probably quite high. If you did lots of exercise and high muscle tone then you probably wouldn't be.
I 'feel' fat if I'm above a size 10, but that's again because I do no exercise so the weight is on my belly and face. It's more about health than size. But unless you're really short I'd say it's unlikely anyone of a 14 would be classed as obese.

Cazpar · 15/03/2024 12:43

Tilkyghg6366 · 15/03/2024 12:42

But everyone is different and clothes size is fairly arbitrary. There is no one right answer.

JamesPringle · 15/03/2024 12:46

I'm 5"11 and whenever I've been a 12 or less, I've tipped into the underweight category on BMI, had sticking out bones, friends and family have raised concerns about being gaunt etc.

Cazpar · 15/03/2024 12:47

I've checked the numbers, and 26% of the UK adult population is obese and 38% are overweight. That's a total of 64%, or almost two thirds, of the population that are overweight or obese.

I think many people have an idea that obesity is at the very very extreme end where someone is morbidly obese, but you can easily be obese without knowing it.

The key thing is to monitor your weight and be honest with yourself.

Waitingfordoggo · 15/03/2024 12:49

As everyone else has said- it depends on height, build and body fat %

I’m 5ft 3 and a size 10 with a BMI of about 23. If I were two sizes bigger, I assume my BMI would be a fair bit higher and so yes, I imagine I would be ‘fat’ (unless the increase in size was purely muscle mass).

IWantTheOneICantHave · 15/03/2024 12:30

No, she said 'I wouldn't say I'm obese'

Lauren0000 · 15/03/2024 12:50

Probably 'chubby' territory for most
