To wish crufts would go back to being a dog show …

And stop obsessing over bloody flyball?

it was the same last year, constantly banging on about flyball. I just want to see the different breeds and learn about them etc, sick of fucking flyball. I turned in today at 3pm - I’d say there was about 10 minutes of breed info and 50 minutes of flyball.

I record Crufts and just FF to avoid the Flyball rubbish. I wish they would show more of the classes - there is obdience competitions going on - wish they would should some of those. It is the same every bloody year - Channel 4 showing what it think makes good TV. Whole programme needs a complete re-vamp!

SevenSeasOfRhye · 07/03/2024 18:42

Agree, the flyball gets repetitive.

Mindymomo · 07/03/2024 18:43

I’ve just said the same, I like agility more, but all that barking, it must be really loud in there. There’s so much we don’t get to see, but then I suppose you need to go to see more.

NoTouch · 07/03/2024 18:45

I wish Crufts would be banned to stop the breeding of deformed dogs to try to meet ridiculous "breed standards"

TooBored1 · 07/03/2024 18:48

Is it perhaps because they know the age of dog shows based on outdated and cruel "standards" is over and they are trying to create a new justification for its existence?

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 07/03/2024 19:04

My dog bloody loves the flyball and especially the agility as he does it himself so for that reason YABU 😂.

My ddog like watching the fly ball and agility, also loved doing it but too old now. He sits in front of the tv

grumpypedestrian · 07/03/2024 19:09

I love Fly Ball, it’s show casing healthy dogs rather than the deformed ‘show standard’ breeds.

PooSniffer · 07/03/2024 20:02

I’d rather see an hour of agility

I really struggle with crufts due to the frankly horrible breed standards they promote .

FrothyDonkeyMilk · 07/03/2024 20:08

I dunno about fly ball showcasing healthy dogs. Anything pushed to extreme has a negative side effect and the injury rates in those dogs must be high, as well as the mental side effects of having a dog quite so obsessed with an activity that they will run like that.

One of the teams this evening was described as all being bred by the same person - which makes me suspiscious about COI also. Though you obvicouly get high COI with show breeds also and at least with fly ball breeding the priority is function, not form. Makes me also wonder about puppies that are not obsessed or fast enough and dogs that get too old to compete safely...

Not saying they don't have better lives than many dogs. Just that I don't see them as particularly well rounded dogs, or holistically healthy (though very fast and strong). And, just because we see it in so many animal sports, I worry about those not able to compete and what happens to them.

grumpypedestrian · 07/03/2024 20:20

Considering a Crufts judge just put the French Bulldog through shows that they have no consideration for the health and quality of life of dogs.

Completely agree.

Cherrysoup · 07/03/2024 20:33

Thought this was going to be about them endlessly talking about brachy dogs but then the KC never doing anything about them. I very much appreciate them spending time on this but they need to (imo) re-jig the breed standard to reflect dogs that don’t suffer breathing issues.

grumpypedestrian · 07/03/2024 20:42

Yep, feels like they aren’t addressing why these issues are happening. They should be putting through the dogs with longer snouts and changing breed standards. It feels hollow when you look at how flat the face on the winning French Bulldog was. That’s clearly what the KC wants from the breed.

Redpriestandmozart · 07/03/2024 20:44

I agree with you, I want to see judging, I want to see breeds, I don't want to see flyball either.

Kendodd · 07/03/2024 20:44

Sparrow7 · 07/03/2024 20:22

Completely agree.

me too

ClockworkDisaster · 07/03/2024 20:47

I don’t want to see the flyball either. Too much barking and everyone looks like they are dressed for a darts competition 🤷‍♀️

Love watching the agility which they don’t seem to show much of.

Would rather learn more about the breeds than a lot of the ‘fluff’ they have between interesting bits.

The frenchie winner of best in group is shocking, the dog literally has no snout at all. The KC reckoned they were going to start promoting longer noses on brachial breeds. The standard poodle was beautiful

OP posts:
Herdinggoats · 07/03/2024 20:59

The shrieking drives me up the wall. It seems so over the top and affected. I worked at a country show next to flyball and it was awful. Bloody relentless

I thought the French bull dog winning and the KC promoting healthy breathing etc was too much of a coincidence. Call me cynical.

I like to see "proper" sized dogs. I can't take toy dogs seriously. Pastoral is my favourite.

User532 · 07/03/2024 21:23

I wish they'd not show the toy and utility groups. All those dogs are unfit for purpose but moreso the Pekinese the Japanese Chin and the King Charles Spaniel. The breeders should be ashamed of themselves for what they've done to those dogs.

Summerdazed · 07/03/2024 21:25

Was at crufts today. Today was the arenas day for me, and the obedience audiences were fairly small.

Have been sat in the main arena since 3 is and would say there was easily 3x as many people in the arena watching the flyball as there were the best of groups, and twice as much as any of the agility

It's clearly popular!

bridgetreilly · 07/03/2024 21:27

I like most of it except the heelwork to music. What is the point?!

Plenty of the toy and utility groups ares fit for purpose! It’s only a few that have unhealthy breed standards. Some of them are breeds that have been around for thousands of years and are still producing strong, healthy dogs.
