To wish crufts would go back to being a dog show …

And stop obsessing over bloody flyball?

it was the same last year, constantly banging on about flyball. I just want to see the different breeds and learn about them etc, sick of fucking flyball. I turned in today at 3pm - I’d say there was about 10 minutes of breed info and 50 minutes of flyball.

Ah ok, so its ok because only some of the dogs suffer from their breed standards?

No one who is a dog lover would go near such an event which displays deformed dogs or an organisation that has been, and continues to be the root cause of such cruelty.

I wish Crufts would be banned to stop the breeding of deformed dogs to try to meet ridiculous "breed standards"

Saved me typing it out

montysma1 · 08/03/2024 00:52

I am still traumatised by the champion German Shepherd with the hideously sloping spine and hips. A sorrier specimen of dog I have never seen.

AnnieSnap · 08/03/2024 01:30

I feel the same way. I’d like to see more time spent of breed classes. What the hell is the obsession with flyball?

Sadly though, I can’t watch it anymore anyway. It wasn’t easy with two Poodles, but this year, we also have an 11-month-old Weimaraner, so it’s completely impossible (with all three going nuts at the screen)! 😳

I wish they'd not show the toy and utility groups. All those dogs are unfit for purpose but moreso the Pekinese the Japanese Chin and the King Charles Spaniel. The breeders should be ashamed of themselves for what they've done to those dogs.

I agree with your points about the King Charles and other breeds you mention, but Standard and Miniature Poodles are in the Utility Group. They have no extremes and are usually very healthy dogs. They could also still do the job for which they were bred (water retrieving).

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 08/03/2024 05:17

I agree as the noise is unbearable and does my head in.

Densol57 · 08/03/2024 05:25

Im off to Crufts on Saturday to see the Working and Pastoral groups and I'll be avoiding the flyball

Scorchio84 · 08/03/2024 05:40

I can't deal with Crufts & I say that as someone who had a (beautiful) English Bull, he died when he was two & the guilt is still with me

I love Pastoral Breeds & the agility trials, I'm sure there used to be a program on years ago with just this? Unless it was a fever dream?

I wish Crufts would be banned to stop the breeding of deformed dogs to try to meet ridiculous "breed standards"

I really wish people would stop assuming that banning Crufts, one championship show out of many, would have anything to do with breeding dogs, deformed or otherwise.

Look to the breed clubs who write the breed standards, the Kennel Club, the judges (who judge all around the country or even world), look to the vets who saw in person, and agreed that the Utility Group winning French Bulldog met the bloody breed standard which states very clearly the dog should have a muzzle that is visible in profile, and open nostrils!

Crufts is the visible-to-the-public trade show and champ dog show, it may seem like the biggest thing in doggy terms of the year, but in breeding dogs... it has little relevance. Banning it would change nothing.

Even banning showing dogs... would change nothing, look at the XL bully mess, the exotic bullies, the micro bullies, the olde tyme bulldogges, the mish-mash of wolf-a-like northern breeds unsound and riddled with cancers - all massively fucked up because there are multiple ideals, multiple 'breed standards', tons of people all producing different dogs without a thought to health or temperament. Look at all the puppy farm bred approximations of pedigree breeds, the giant poms, the microscopic chihuahuas, teacup yorkies and so on. Very few of those are shown at all, even in their own made up registries and clubs where those exist... and they're all full of horrible health AND temperament issues. It is completely legal to breed an animal who cannot breath and will suffer horrific pain all its life.

Making it actually illegal to seek to breed dogs with no muzzle and stenotic nares..., or other defective, life limiting conformation, would. But the current (and previous tbh) government gives zero shits.

grumpypedestrian · 08/03/2024 06:31

I don’t think banning is the way forward. Changing breed standards is more important. But that’s never going to happen when judges favour extreme flat faces and German Shepherds with shockingly deformed spines.

I have a breed with both a working and show type, mine is a working type as I don’t believe the show type is capable of the job it’s bred for, which is awful and why KC pedigree status isn’t the honour a lot of people on here believe it is.

I’d rather have a healthy dog.

NashvilleQueen · 08/03/2024 06:36

Rather than rating the dogs I like to rate the footwear of the people showing them as they do their little run around.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 08/03/2024 06:52

I would like Crufts to focus more on all types of doggy sports- not just one or two.
They should promote dog training, and responsible ownership. Not just as an add on but as a main event!

And yes, ditch the unhealthy, ridiculous breed standards!
But then, as it stands, Crufts is an elite dog show. It's for the K9 equivalent of multimillionaires, so nothing changes.

🤣🤣🤣 I'm afraid DH and I were "fat ankle shaming" while watching last night.

Justleaveitblankthen · 08/03/2024 07:10

Remember the year of the very obviously deformed German Shepherd winning it's category, or at least being fetted over?
Like many GS's these days it could barely stand.

Haven't watched it since.

Baxdream · 08/03/2024 07:18

I went to crufts once and it was awful. The smell of hairspray on poodles was disgusting.
I have a Lhasa apso and the breed got about 2 minutes on TV . Although seeing them with such long hair makes me sad. It must be so difficult for them to play in normal life

Willmafrockfit · 08/03/2024 07:21

i am not keen on toy dogs either, although the Pomeranian won me round against my better judgement

SquashPenguin · 08/03/2024 07:30

My dog enjoys watching that flyball for a bit, then he goes behind the tv to find the dogs 😆

Hurukan · 08/03/2024 07:35

First time I've watched in years and was horrified by the poor king Charles spaniel and the fat floofy thing that could hardly walk it had so much fur.

Dearg · 08/03/2024 07:39

My old, arthritic Lab got quite animated at the brief agility slot. Lay beside me with his heading on one side , totally enthralled.

Then he fell asleep as the male commentator droned on with the same boring script he used last year.

I switched off at the Toy group. Even the classification annoys me. They are not effing toys!

We went one step further in our house and were calf shaming as well. What is it about showing dogs that attracts women with no shape to their lower legs whatsoever? 🤔😂

BrassicaBabe · 08/03/2024 08:13

@hairbearbunches some of these poor women didn't get on camera past their calves. You'd think they'd "stage them" a tad 🤣. Going away this weekend, it's made me pack a pair of heels. 🤣 All of those ballet flats looked terrible 🤣🤣

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/03/2024 08:17

I would ban crufts half of them are interbred with false papers. My MIL is a breeder and I've seen it all, one of the reasons we are NC with her and her KK associates. All about the £££

What a pleasant thread this turned in to.
People dedicate their lives, get an entry into the biggest and most prestigious dog show in the world, possibly one of the best days of their lives, and get bodyshamed.

I’m quite shocked to be honest, this isn’t what I intended when I started the thread. Very bitchy (excuse the pun)

What annoys me more than anything is the way the handlers yank their dog’s necks in the air when they do their run around. The dogs look like they’re being hung. Surely the judges should want to see the dog moving naturally?
