To wish crufts would go back to being a dog show …

And stop obsessing over bloody flyball?

it was the same last year, constantly banging on about flyball. I just want to see the different breeds and learn about them etc, sick of fucking flyball. I turned in today at 3pm - I’d say there was about 10 minutes of breed info and 50 minutes of flyball.

Well thanks to this thread I've finally looked up what flyball is, and wow, my dog would love it! Running fast ✔️ chasing a ball ✔️ a tuggy toy at the end ✔️ not sure about the jumping though.

I watched crufts for the first time in years yesterday, just the showing. Was very shocked and saddened at the winning frenchie. So many frenchies out there leading miserable lives, the KC ought to be paving the way for actual snouts being breed standard. Just gross to see that completely flat face. I also found the tiny legs of the dachshund completely grotesque when the camera zoomed in. That can't be right.

I did enjoy seeing the vulnerable breeds though. It made it very clear that breeds really go in and out of fashion. Crazy that frenchies, pugs, xl bullies, the godforsaken micro bullies, and dachshunds are popular when so many healthy looking striking breeds risk extinction.

I really wish people would stop assuming that banning Crufts, one championship show out of many, would have anything to do with breeding dogs, deformed or otherwise.

Look to the breed clubs who write the breed standards, the Kennel Club, the judges (who judge all around the country or even world), look to the vets who saw in person, and agreed that the Utility Group winning French Bulldog met the bloody breed standard which states very clearly the dog should have a muzzle that is visible in profile, and open nostrils!

Crufts is the visible-to-the-public trade show and champ dog show, it may seem like the biggest thing in doggy terms of the year, but in breeding dogs... it has little relevance. Banning it would change nothing.

Even banning showing dogs... would change nothing, look at the XL bully mess, the exotic bullies, the micro bullies, the olde tyme bulldogges, the mish-mash of wolf-a-like northern breeds unsound and riddled with cancers - all massively fucked up because there are multiple ideals, multiple 'breed standards', tons of people all producing different dogs without a thought to health or temperament. Look at all the puppy farm bred approximations of pedigree breeds, the giant poms, the microscopic chihuahuas, teacup yorkies and so on. Very few of those are shown at all, even in their own made up registries and clubs where those exist... and they're all full of horrible health AND temperament issues. It is completely legal to breed an animal who cannot breath and will suffer horrific pain all its life.

Making it actually illegal to seek to breed dogs with no muzzle and stenotic nares..., or other defective, life limiting conformation, would. But the current (and previous tbh) government gives zero shits.

Crufts is organised and hosted by the Kennel Club.

It is there to show off and make money from their deformed standards. The judges judge to the KC deformed standards. The vets confirmed the Frenchie meets the KC deformed standards.

Crufts is the public money making freak show of the Kennel Club standards and the pain they have inflicted on dogs for entertainment.

It is not just complicit with the KC standards, it IS the KC standards.

Banning the KC show (which is called Crufts) it will show that what the KC does is no longer unacceptable (should have been done years ago).

I love Fly Ball, it’s show casing healthy dogs rather than the deformed ‘show standard’ breeds.

So doI. It’s great seeing how happy and excited the dogs are.

KreedKafer · 08/03/2024 10:17

If you're massively into breed standards etc, you should actually go to Crufts rather than watching it on the television. Then you can choose which parts of the event you want to engage in.

Most TV viewers are much, more interested in seeing dogs at their best doing agility, obedience, flyball etc than they are in obsessing over the angle of a deformed dog's hips. The TV coverage is not aimed at people who are interested in the minutiae of breed judging, and nor should it be, given the disgraceful state of a lot of the breeds shown there.

What a pleasant thread this turned in to.
People dedicate their lives, get an entry into the biggest and most prestigious dog show in the world, possibly one of the best days of their lives, and get bodyshamed.

OK, rather than criticising their appearance, I'll criticise them for dedicating their lives to an appalling canine freak show that presents dogs as objects instead of animals. How about that?

LadyNijo · 08/03/2024 10:28

Isn’t the issue with whatever classes/events TV channel is choosing to broadcast, rather than what actually goes on at the show?

I agree about the breeding deformities, and the KC’s role.

Exactly this. Even the BBC dropped Crufts cos it's just an abusive freak show. How any dog lover can defend it is beyond me.

RedPony1 · 08/03/2024 10:52

The dog showing world needs the same overhaul as the inhand Welsh pony showing does in the UK!

Yes. Hopefully you can see the difference between the two.

What is this flyball you speak of?! Sorry, non dog owner here!

In fairness, it’s a piece of piss to qualify for some breeds, no real dedication required.

Sonolanona · 08/03/2024 17:14

I was outraged at the Frenchie winning ... but that's because I have a Eurasier Grin(and no not all the utility breeds are useless or pointless) mine is beautiful, strong, a proper dog shaped, wolf of a girl..no dodgy hips, backs or faces here.. but Eurasiers are always overlooked at Crufts!
I do wish they would stop trying to justify all the flat faced breeds though... the vet yesterday declaring how the pug was perfect.. no wheezing (probably has had the surgery).. just stop breeding the poor things!

I'm going on Sunday to help at my breed stand, and to walk round with my adult autistic son who will stop at each stand and say 'you are SO beautiful' to every dog he seesSmile Discover Dogs is brilliant if you want a dog but have no idea what would suit your family best (and can't rescue because you have a cat etc and rescues seem very reluctant to part with their dogs)

I have no interest in the show rings however, and hate seeing how the handlers use those wire like slip leads to show them.

It’s a very fast paced sport where dogs have to race over a series of jumps, grab a ball from the end and then race back.
There has to be 4 clean runs, so if a dog drops the ball, misses a jump, or the next dog starts before the previous dog has passed the finish line, then they have to run another dog.

2 teams compete side by side and best of 3 wins.

it’s very noisy with all the dogs barking and handlers shouting to get them amped up.

It used to be mostly collies as they are fast and reliable, but it now includes lots of different breeds including whippets who are incredibly fast.

justaboutdonenow · 09/03/2024 09:18

DancefloorAcrobatics · 08/03/2024 06:52

I would like Crufts to focus more on all types of doggy sports- not just one or two.
They should promote dog training, and responsible ownership. Not just as an add on but as a main event!

And yes, ditch the unhealthy, ridiculous breed standards!
But then, as it stands, Crufts is an elite dog show. It's for the K9 equivalent of multimillionaires, so nothing changes.

I know a lot of people in the show world & none are multimillionaires, so not sure where you're getting that idea from.
