Top Gun Maverick

Ffs I was not expecting the emotional punch from this. Top Gun is my all time favourite film having watched it at age 11/12 and wanting to be Maverick. A dream denied by asthma alas. I'm watching Maverick with ds who has shown a sudden interest in planes. I'm a way behind I know. I didn't know there'd be so many references and clips and links to the original. I didn't pay much attention to all the hype when I came out. I bawl every time Goose smacks his head and did it again 35 years later about half an hour ago. Ds is concerned 😬
No film has ever stirred my blood like Top Gun but planes are in my soul.
I've not got to the end of Maverick yet so there might be more tears. My adrenaline is pumping.
Any other big fans of the original have a similar reaction? I know there'll be those saying it's shite but his I love it.

Yes! Me

I saw it in the cinema though for extra impact!

LaurieFairyCake · 14/02/2024 21:10

Both great movies

Really really enjoyable

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 14/02/2024 21:12

Me, because it took me back to 1986 which was the best year of my life anyway. I think I probably know the original by heart. ❤️

Nsws2015 · 14/02/2024 21:12

I bloody love it, went to the cinema to see it with the hubby who is 10 years younger and wasn't a fan of the original top gun despite my protestations to it being one of my fave films. Top gun maverick....omg I almost screamed in the cinema when he got shot down!!! And I was so excited when we first saw penny and heard David Bowie playing on the jukebox in the background as she was Sarah in labyrinth with David Bowie and that is one of my fave films ever!
My family laugh at me as its my go to film, I must watch it once a fortnight (sometimes once a week 🙈) and I was gutted not to go to the Royal International Air tattoo the year Tom cruise showed up!!!! And even worse.....when he was filming mission impossible near to where I live he only stayed at the bloody hotel I used to work at....I was gutted 🤣🤣🤣

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/02/2024 21:13

I loved it. The nods to the first film and Goose and Iceman were just perfect. Better than any of the current Oscar crop imo.

This may excite you... I've read they are making a third!

afrikat · 14/02/2024 21:16

I honestly think it's one of the best sequels ever made, it's absolutely wonderful. Might watch it again now...

"Thank you for saving my life"

"It's what my dad would have done"

I went to the premiere. My heart rate hit 186 bpm and I stopped breathing for a good few minutes (the lady next to me squeezed my arm to check I was still alive! 😂)

HappiestSleeping · 14/02/2024 21:32

I like that Tom Cruise gathered as many of the original crew together in order to get the same feel as the first one. And also insisted Val Kilmer was in it.

GN637 · 14/02/2024 21:41

HOLY FUCK!! That was better than sex! I'm exhausted! Loved it so much. I had no interest in seeing it either but I'm glad ds persuaded me to tonight. God I love planes!

Lovely to see that others feel the same. I used to go round quoting lines from the film all the time had a huge Athena poster of an F-14 Tomcat on my wall. Awesome.

Love both movies so so much. I was lucky enough to be able to watch them back to back when I flew transatlantic last year. I blubbed and grinned my way through most of the flight. Lots of people loathe Tom Cruise but he's my ultimate screen hero and I think he did the most awesome job with TG Maverick, especially getting Val Kilmer in on the action.

gemsgv · 14/02/2024 22:01

On a side note, if you like the clips and references to the original, have you seen Cobra Kai? I didn't realise just how many of the original Karate Kid cast were in it and the flashback scenes are really well mixed in

MaggieFS · 14/02/2024 22:09

I loved it. It had me hooked and it just perfectly linked back to the first one. Definitely at the edge of my seat holding my breath too.

Also me! It was our first time at the cinema after lockdown and as soon as that montage at the beginning started I was grinning like a 5 year old.

I knew I'd love it but the goosebumps took me by surprise!

Think watching it after lockdown was a release k a way IYSWIM? The whole cinema clapped at the end.

Tis fab

Edited

Ahh Cobra Kai (especially the first two series) is just awesome, real "happy place" tv.

And I'd climb Johnny like a tree Grin

I'm always late to any party but I'm so glad I caught up. I don't watch many films but fast planes and motorbikes have always been my thing along with men in uniform. I have the soundtrack on cd and had it on cassette originally. The soundtrack is getting added to my Alexa playlist tomorrow.

Buzzing the tower at the end had me grinning. Rooster was so like Goose. Great casting. Val Kilmer made me feel sad. He reminded me of how time has passed by and I'm no longer a spring chicken either.

Loved it. Might have to watch them both again now you’ve reminded me

OhRightyThen · 14/02/2024 22:59

Brilliant brilliant film. I watched it alone in the cinema at the end of mat leave whilst little one had a settling in day 😢 so have bitter sweet memories. Very rare a sequel is up there with the original. I have so much respect for Tom Cruise ❤️

GoldenMeadow · 14/02/2024 23:32

I really didn't like it! Thought it was cheesy and not a patch on the original - I seem to be in the minority!

Propertylover · 14/02/2024 23:33

I thought they pitched it just right with the references back to the original. I thought having Val Kilmer reprise his role was so lovely but sad to see him unwell.

laclochette · 14/02/2024 23:40

Haha I absolutely loved it too, so exhilarating. Just a really fun, perfect film.

The sort of film that only really works on the massive cinema screen, loved it and the original.

Ponderingwindow · 14/02/2024 23:45

I absolutely loved the movie.

had trouble not laughing hysterically though as the Star Wars storyline became more and more obvious. When they used the graphic to explain the assault I had to pause and start laughing. I kept picturing a theater full of people doing the same. When they got to the trench run, i just kept waiting to hear Alec Guinness.

LoreleiG · 14/02/2024 23:54

Sorry to jump in but I am also late to this party and wondered are both films suitable for kids? If so what age? (I have obviously seen Top Gun but years ago)

Mookie81 · 15/02/2024 00:19

When Dangerzone got going I squealed Grin.
