Top Gun Maverick

Ffs I was not expecting the emotional punch from this. Top Gun is my all time favourite film having watched it at age 11/12 and wanting to be Maverick. A dream denied by asthma alas. I'm watching Maverick with ds who has shown a sudden interest in planes. I'm a way behind I know. I didn't know there'd be so many references and clips and links to the original. I didn't pay much attention to all the hype when I came out. I bawl every time Goose smacks his head and did it again 35 years later about half an hour ago. Ds is concerned 😬
No film has ever stirred my blood like Top Gun but planes are in my soul.
I've not got to the end of Maverick yet so there might be more tears. My adrenaline is pumping.
Any other big fans of the original have a similar reaction? I know there'll be those saying it's shite but his I love it.

It's a truly phenomenal film! Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 did a Top Gun/Maverick DLC collab so you can fly the movie planes (F17s?) in the same low altitude landscapes in timed competitive challenges. Also amazing!

I really didn't like it! Thought it was cheesy and not a patch on the original - I seem to be in the minority!

I agree. I loved the original and had been expecting a lot so was disappointed.

It seemed like a part rehash of some of the original themes, but some parts were silly (Tom helping at the end really?) Overall it was cheesy.

Slightly off topic but an extremely flirty PT at my gym is a dead ringer for Tom Cruise in his cocktail days Grin it's quite distracting

GN637 · 15/02/2024 19:11

Watching the original now and they are soooo young!!! I remember the teenage lust. But mainly for the planes 😁

Very very late to the party and watched on Netflix - although it is also on All 4 - it was beautifully done. Absolutely deserved its Best Picture Oscar nomination.
I'd have been happy it winning tbh ( as I couldn't get on with EEAAO even though I like Michelle Yeoh).

Elvis1956 · 30/03/2024 17:55

The strange thing is that both films, when you break it down have pretty poor storylines. But the acting, the way that the actors are so well cast, the action which is really believable and the sound track make the films.
Love the references back to the original

TheIcecreamManCometh · 30/03/2024 18:02

I've just read back-to-back articles that Cruise is the film and should have got a fourth Best Actor nomination. Whilst they only get five to nominate (and they were all pretty decent) I'd have moved Colin Farrell to Supporting and given Tom the slot. Except then all three actors for Banshees (Farrell, Gleeson and Keoghan) would have been in Supporting category, which isn't allowed even though I didn't really get on board with that movie either).

janefondofu · 30/03/2024 18:08

I've watched it about 5 times and still cry everytime

Oblomov24 · 30/03/2024 18:15

Enjoyed it very much.

Highfivemum · 30/03/2024 20:08

I thought it started a bit poor but then I really enjoyed it.
Tom Cruise is like Peter Pan and doesn’t seem to age.

ADoggyDogWorld · 30/03/2024 20:16

I watched Maverick the other week, we were staying with friends and they put it on. I was not expecting it to be so GOOD!

I was thinking that about Tom but he’s had good work done and his hair is dyed. He looks good on it though.

AgnesNaismith · 30/03/2024 20:26

i think Maverick is one of the best films of the last 10 years. Such an antidote to a conveyor belt of marvel and dc films. Agree with you OP, my kids also absolutely loved it - so much I caught the older one watching it out of choice the other day on her own.

FoxyLoxyLoo · 30/03/2024 20:29

They’re making another one.

Agree with this.Loved the first one and was excited for the second but sadly for me it didn't really hit the spot. I thought the chemistry between Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly wasn't there and that the whole film was forgettable. It was fine, it certainly wasn't shit. I honestly watched it and forgot it immediately though. I couldn't even really tell you the plot a year or so on. Everyone likes different things though, just an opinion.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/03/2024 20:48

I saw it at the cinema. It was such a nostalgia trip for me as I was a teen when Top Gun came out and I had the soundtrack on cassette tape! I watched it again with my dd on tv last week and still felt the same. She didn't understand my emotions. To be honest she doesn't really like any of my childhood (80s) films 😂

When Dangerzone got going I squealed Grin.

Same 😂

TroysMammy · 30/03/2024 21:04

After I saw it on the cinema I listened to the original soundtrack on YouTube. Again and again and again.

TroysMammy · 30/03/2024 21:05

I also updated my Facebook status " It's 1986 again and I'm 18" .

HesterPrincess · 30/03/2024 21:06

I loved the original so much, I think I went 5 times to the cinema. I really didn't enjoy the sequel at all - moments of it were amazing but it stretched the imagination too far for me. I was horribly disappointed.

The original will have my heart forever.

Mollyplop999 · 30/03/2024 21:10

I watched Top Gun only 7 years ago with my uncle. He was dying of cancer and I used to go and sit with him at night. I loved it, but I'll never be able to watch it again as it would be too painful.

Chocolateteabag · 30/03/2024 21:11

HappiestSleeping · 14/02/2024 21:32

I like that Tom Cruise gathered as many of the original crew together in order to get the same feel as the first one. And also insisted Val Kilmer was in it.

Love both films - just wish they could have found a way to have Kelly McGillis and /or Meg Ryan to feature somehow

Could have been a phone call as a "higher up" or a fleeting scene

I've read that KG wasn't even approached for the second film - which just feels wrong TBH

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 30/03/2024 21:13

gemsgv · 14/02/2024 22:01

On a side note, if you like the clips and references to the original, have you seen Cobra Kai? I didn't realise just how many of the original Karate Kid cast were in it and the flashback scenes are really well mixed in

Edited

Cobra Kai is brilliant! I tell anyone my age they must watch it.
Its cheesetastic and amazing.

I know what you mean. Not as wrong as not using the same voice actors for the second Chicken Run film though. That was sacrilege.

Kelly said herself it's because she's aged in a non Hollywood way. She's got grey hair, looks her age and (in her words not mine) is fat. The director denied this, but I think everyone knows this is probably true. Jennifer Connelly fit their lead women type.
