Naga Munchetty vs Chris Philp

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 08/02/2024 10:54

Usually I can’t watch her but AIBU on this occasion to feel holding people accountable for what they say and when they say them is justified.

I am also wondering why the misgendering:

Naga Munchetty Clashes With Tory Minister In Angry Exchange Over Sunak Trans Row

The BBC presenter did not appreciate Chris Philp's explanation of the PM's controversial remarks.

Where is the misgendering?

OpalOrchid · 08/02/2024 21:26

i don't usually like her. But she was magnificent this morning.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 08/02/2024 22:07

@10ThousandSpoons In the live interview Chris Philps calls Brianna Ghey he, and has to be corrected.

@OpalOrchid agreed, and I really wanted to understand too, if others agreed. I felt it was entirely appropriate within the context of what Brianna Ghey’s father had said.

I’m quite horrified, by the attitude of the current politicians around all of it, not to mention the absolute disregard for the grieving father of a vulnerable young teen.

He also lied.

He said a Labour MP asked him to comment and Sunak did. He ignored the question from Liz Twist asking him to apologise. Instead, after being handed a note from an aide (no doubt on social media), he then made a comment about Brianna Ghey's mother. At the end of PMQs.

People can see PMQs and they can see what happened.

Q7. May I take this opportunity to ask the Prime Minister if he will consider apologising to Brianna Ghey’s mother for his insensitive comment? Turning to my question, the independent report into Teesworks released last Monday throws up more questions than it answers. It is vital that we now have a National Audit Office investigation. The report was scathing and said that there is insufficient transparency to offer evidence of value for money. Should the Government not lead by example, and will the Prime Minister finally release details of his conversations surrounding Teesworks, as he was asked to do twice last year? (901398)

I think the hon. Lady was talking about the report on Teesworks, as far as I can see. What that report noted was that the pace and scope of the regeneration had had a wide-reaching positive impact on the local economy—and of course it was an independent external report. It makes it clear that there is no evidence of corruption or illegality and the Government will of course respond to the recommendations in the report as soon as possible.

@cakeorwine

Thank you for sharing this.

What really stands out too, is the comment of leading by example, such a simple statement but such an enormous impact.

It's a shame that this was not picked up in the interview.

YABU for not including a link to the video.

@Ktime I couldn’t find one or I would have.

In the live interview Chris Philps calls Brianna Ghey he, and has to be corrected.

I've just watched the clip and I can't see where Chris Phillips calls Brianna Ghey 'he'? In the clip he clearly says 'her' three times.

I've never voted Tory in my life but I do think Keir was disingenuous here, I really don't think Rishi was referencing Brianna Ghey.

notknowledgeable · 08/02/2024 23:05

wow that photo emphasises how deeply ingrained misogyny is in our culture. The man can pop up and down as much as he likes with a natural face, but the woman has to cover hers up totally in paste.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 08/02/2024 23:06

@Ktime there is another version in that case circulating on Linkedin of all places - which is why I asked the question as I was so shocked. I have not seen the original. He is corrected by a woman - I don’t recognise her but that doesn’t mean anything.

I guess it’s a deep fake. There is not much coverage on this searching through Google / YouTube etc so good to know.

Doesn’t change my views on the rest of it though.

I've seen a couple of clips of Chris Philps on bbc breakfast with Naga and on sky with Kay Burley and he refers to Brianna as "she". There is one point when, talking about what Sunak said, he says "he [Sunak] never referred to Brianna himself" which I think is clearly referring to Sunak when he says "himself", especially given that he refers to Brianna as "she" several times in the bbc interview. This is the point where Kay Burley corrects him by saying that Brianna was a girl.

That said, Chris Philps is a prize twit generally and never comes across remotely well. His interview with Naga was awful, and I can't understand why anyone in the Conservative Party thinks it's a good idea to send him out to speak to people. My favourite is him attempting to defend Truss's mini budget shortly after it was announced (and even more shortly before it was canned).

I agree. And I'm a massive Tory hater.

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 08/02/2024 23:22

Thanks @CrispsandCheeseSandwich so it was in there, I can’t find anything now as it’s disappeared and there is nothing on YouTube either.

There were many comments on it around that too, but I only watched it once, that was enough.

Neither.

Notoriously rude, condescending & obnoxious TV presenter vs ghastly Tory politician. That’s like having to choose between syphilis & gonorrhoea.

You are missing the point.
This was not about Brianna.
This was about a joke referencing trans people.
At at time when the mother of a trans girl who had been murdered was in the House.
Do you think it was appropriate to make such a comment about "what a woman is" in such circumstances?

notthatthis · 09/02/2024 02:37

I love Naga!

Bululu · 09/02/2024 04:15

Of course Naga was going to be all over this.

It wasn’t about Brianna, Keir made it about Brianna by his cynical attempt to throw the attention on Sunak, he didn’t have to go there.

Rishi was not making fun of trans people, he was clearly referencing Keir’s much publicised comment that ‘it's wrong to say only woman can have a cervix’. Which is clearly idiotic.

Keir and Rishi are as bad as each other.

I can’t stand Naga (or Charlie Stayt), rude and arrogant.

I was the same but then I tuned in to Naga on the radio and she's much more personable without Stayt. I really like her on the radio she's totally different.very knowledgeable and friendly and feels like you are listening to a friend. Get rid of Stayt I say he is awful. I can't watch them on Breakfast.

SleepQuest33 · 09/02/2024 05:17

I really like both Naga and Charlie. Can’t see the rudeness people are referring to? They’re both excellent in my opinion.

GoldenEagles · 09/02/2024 05:20

I can’t stand Naga and Charlie either, but yes, she did a good job with this twerp of a politician.
