Naga Munchetty vs Chris Philp

Betterbuckleupbarbara · 08/02/2024 10:54

Usually I can’t watch her but AIBU on this occasion to feel holding people accountable for what they say and when they say them is justified.

I am also wondering why the misgendering:

Naga Munchetty Clashes With Tory Minister In Angry Exchange Over Sunak Trans Row

The BBC presenter did not appreciate Chris Philp's explanation of the PM's controversial remarks.

It wasn’t about Brianna, Keir made it about Brianna by his cynical attempt to throw the attention on Sunak, he didn’t have to go there.

Rishi was not making fun of trans people, he was clearly referencing Keir’s much publicised comment that ‘it's wrong to say only woman can have a cervix’. Which is clearly idiotic.

Keir and Rishi are as bad as each other.

Edited

Do you think it was appropriate to bring up the definition of a woman - trans issues - when the mum pf a murdered trans girl was in the House?

He heard Keir say that Esther was in the Chamber. Or maybe he didn't? Maybe he was so focused on his prepared lines that he wasn't listening and he didn't think that "Hang on a moment, why don't I drop this particular line?" from my script?

Esther wasn’t there, she entered the public gallery after the comment. This is yet more fake news, such as OP being mislead that Chris Williams referred to Brianna Ghey as ‘he’ when he never did.

And I do agree with Rishi Sunak on this point, Keir’s comments were stupid.

I join the Prime Minister in sending His Majesty the King our very best wishes for his treatment. Across the House, we all look forward to seeing him back to full health as quickly as possible.
This week, the unwavering bravery of Brianna Ghey’s mother, Esther, has touched us all. As a father, I cannot even imagine the pain that she is going through. I am glad that she is with us in the Gallery today.
A year ago, the Prime Minister promised to bring down NHS waiting lists. Isn’t he glad that he did not bet a grand on it?

Maybe he didn't hear those comments?

So I will ask again:

Do you think it was appopriate to include the line in his prepared script?
Or do you think he should have dropped that line and just kept the rest?

It's not a hard question but you are doing exactly the same deflecting as Tory MPs

cakeorwine · 09/02/2024 01:54

You are missing the point.
This was not about Brianna.
This was about a joke referencing trans people.
At at time when the mother of a trans girl who had been murdered was in the House.
Do you think it was appropriate to make such a comment about "what a woman is" in such circumstances?

It wasnt a joke about trans people, it was a joke about Keir Starmer and his idiotic statement, which is laughable and which should be made fun of

Another tory hater here but this is unfortunatley which is going to do it for Labour, they'll be wiped out even smaller with this sort of carry on

Or do you think there is a time and a place for such comments and that was not the appropriate time or place?

In the live interview Chris Philps calls Brianna Ghey he, and has to be corrected.

I've just watched the clip and I can't see where Chris Phillips calls Brianna Ghey 'he'? In the clip he clearly says 'her' three times.

I've never voted Tory in my life but I do think Keir was disingenuous here, I really don't think Rishi was referencing Brianna Ghey.

Whether he was specifically referencing Brianna Ghey is not the issue, is it? The fact is he was making a jolly little dig about trans people at a time when he knew that the mother of a murdered trans child was in Parliament.

If, for example, he had made a jolly dig about Starmer's policies on parental supervision whilst the mother of James Bulger was in the house, would it be excusable because it didn't specifically reference him?

Sunak didn't have to mention trans issues. He could have made his little speech perfectly well without it, and anyone with an ounce of sensitivity would have. In those circumstances, he really can't complain when the obvious point is made.

It wasn't a joke about trans people. It was a jibe at Keir for not understanding basic biology.

I really like both Naga and Charlie. Can’t see the rudeness people are referring to? They’re both excellent in my opinion.

This. Is it because she's not a soft pushover? I love her steely approach to interviewing politicians and she's very professional. Charlie, too.

I also can't stand Sunak and can't wait till the Tories are voted out. But I think this is all massively overblown. Sunak made a point that many agree with about Labour's views on women. His timing was poor, but not malicious imo. Still an odious little toad, mind you.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 09/02/2024 09:28

I think this has been blown way out of proportion by Starmer and has made it a lot worse for Brianna's mother and father. I am definitely not a Tory voter and dislike Sunak with a passion but the furore around this is ridiculous.

Sunak made a jibe about Starners u turns and frankly ludicrous suggestion that some women have a penis, it was not transphobic or about Brianna. Would I have made it given Brianna's mother was in the house? No probably not. Was it insensitive? Probably a bit, given Brianna was trans. Did Starmer make a fuss and make it worse? Definitely. It was a flippant comment that wouldn't have even been noticed if Starmer hadn't made a big deal of it.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 09/02/2024 09:29

P.s I'm a big fan of Naga.

HermioneWeasley · 09/02/2024 09:35

Christ, I cannot believe posters are a king me defend Rishi Sunak.

the facts are clear - he was listing Starmer’s u turns and whether or not women have a penis was one of them. Nobody would have connected it to Brianna if Starmer hadn’t used the appalling murder of a child to score cheap political points. As a floating voter it makes me think less of Starmer, not Sunak.

on a related point, women are always told it’s an offensive time to talk about our rights - it’s the holy month of Pride, or asexual furrie awareness day, or it’s the day that brianna’s killers were sentenced. It’s always just an excuse to shut us up as nonsense like “women with a penis” doesn’t stand public scrutiny at all.

Not quite a full description. He was listing alleged U turns, leading up to the big punchline about transpeople which he uttered with a big grin because he clearly thought he was being immensely funny and clever. He could have done his little list without that line, he could certainly have done it without making it the punchline, and he could certainly have uttered it without making it seem like being a trans woman is ever such a hilarious joke. Anyone with an ounce of sensibility and brainpower would have avoided this one.

Do you really think that Brianna Ghey's parents wouldn't have connected this to her murder when this idiot chose to say it whilst her mother was actually in Parliament?

I didn't notice a big grin. When your opponent says something stupid, he deserves to be called out for it.

Keir saying it's not just women who have a cervix was supremely stupid and his backtracking to '99% of women' made him even more stupid.

I think they're both odious toads, as a pp put it, but in this instance Keir did use the appalling murder of a child to score cheap political points, as Hermione put it.

Laiste · 09/02/2024 10:30

When KS works out what a woman is he'll get my vote.

I think a lot of this was grasping at an opportunity to deflect about his U turn on spending on climate change.

Naga is uncomfortably rude to lots of people. When it's someone you might find dissagreable yourself it's great obviously.

Most of the time though it's cheap shots with glances at camera and pretending to be bored or confused. Rude.

Flamme · 09/02/2024 10:52

Team Naga on this one. Charlie Stayt I just don't warm to, he may be lovely off screen, no idea though.

Mr Speaker
I call the Leader of the Opposition.
Keir Starmer
(Holborn and St Pancras) (Lab)Sharethis specific contribution
I join the Prime Minister in sending His Majesty the King our very best wishes for his treatment. Across the House, we all look forward to seeing him back to full health as quickly as possible.
This week, the unwavering bravery of Brianna Ghey’s mother, Esther, has touched us all. As a father, I cannot even imagine the pain that she is going through. I am glad that she is with us in the Gallery today.
A year ago, the Prime Minister promised to bring down NHS waiting lists. Isn’t he glad that he did not bet a grand on it?

The Prime Minister
At least I stand by my commitments. He is so indecisive that the only bet he would make is an each-way bet.

Keir Starmer
He says he stands by his commitments. He once insisted that if he missed his promises,
“I’m the Prime Minister…it’s on me personally”.
Today we learn from his own officials that he is the blocker to any deal to end the doctors’ strikes. Every time he is asked, he blames everyone else. What exactly did he mean when he said “it’s on me personally” if he does not meet his promise?

The Prime Minister
We are bringing down waiting lists for the longest waiters and making progress. It is a bit rich to hear about promises from someone who has broken every single promise he was elected on. I have counted almost 30 in the last year: pensions, planning, peerages, public sector pay, tuition fees, childcare, second referendums, defining a woman—although, in fairness, that was only 99% of a U-turn. The list goes on, but the theme is the same: empty words, broken promises and absolutely no plan.

Keir Starmer
Of all the weeks to say that, when Brianna’s mother is in this Chamber—shame! Parading as a man of integrity when he has got absolutely no responsibility, it is absolute—[Interruption.]

Mr Speaker
Order. I think Members are getting carried away. Our constituents want to hear the questions and they certainly want to hear the answers. They do not want to hear organised barracking, so please, I want no more of it.
