Why don't people blow their bastard noses?

Sniff, sniff, sniff. You have snot in your nose, blow it!

Just got into the office. Big open plan monstrosity. 2 other people are in. They are both sniffing snot up their noses every 10 seconds or so, in stereo.

I offered the closest one to me my box of tissues. Oh, thanks, but I'm fine.

Its so annoying for others, but it MUST be annoying for them too, surely?

Mind you, it's light relief from the usual YouTube videos being played on full volume without headphones.

Or the shouted conversations had over multiple banks of desks. Or the pile of dirty dishes around the sink, on the draining board and in the sink. Or the box of mouldy lunch festering in the fridge.

God I hate the office.

I hate it!!!!! Argh!!!!!!

DillDanding · 07/02/2024 07:48

I hate sniffing, but then I hate public nose blowing even more. It should be done in the loo or somewhere private.

35965a · 07/02/2024 07:49

It knocks me sick. Just find a bathroom or quiet corner and blow your damn nose.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/02/2024 07:51

I once offered a sniffer a tissue when they were sitting next to me at dinner. They interpreted this as me not wanting to sit next to them because they had a cold. No. I've offered you a tissue because the bloody sniffing is disgusting!

But then there are lots of people who think blowing your nose is revolting. I'd much rather that than bloody sniffing.

KennedyFeets · 07/02/2024 07:51

You can blow your nose gently.
I guess possible reasons:

They enjoy sniffling, like how it sounds and feels

Sniffling gets them noticed and sympathies

They have make up on that they dont want to disturb

Their skin is sore so trying to save up a good blow until its too big and go to the loo for

They dont have tissues and very funny or stubborn about taking one from others

AlizeeEasy · 07/02/2024 07:53

Terrible confession here…I don’t understand how to blow my nose. I know that sounds weird, I mean, you just blow? But it just doesn’t do anything when I try, I just breathe out heavily. How do people get that trumpet nose when they blow their nose? How don’t I have this skill? I’m sorry if my sniffles ever annoy someone, I just can’t help it!

KennedyFeets · 07/02/2024 07:53

Even worse I shared an office with a young woman who used to snort up her mucus and swallow repeatedly instead of blowing her nose or sniffling she would 'swallow it back up'. That turns my stomach more than blowing nose. Some people are so loud when they blow their nose, it's fine if you blow it gently and away from people.

AlwaysFreezing · 07/02/2024 07:53

Yeah, I hear you abiut the public nose blowing, I used to share a smaller office with someone who would blow their nose so LOUDLY it used to make me jump! The worst bit was when she would then inspect the contents of the tissue! Bleugh.

But I'd take public nose blowing over sniffing any day. The sniffing is interminable. Nose blowing, over and done with in 10 seconds!

You work with inconsiderate arseholes

cryinglaughing · 07/02/2024 07:54

I would rather a 'hold a tissue to your nose and sniff'.

Snot rattling out of a nose when someone blows makes me heave 🤮

This is the worst snot related crime. I agree.

Because when I blow it, huge amounts of snot will blow out over my hands, face and down my top, I dont want to do that in the office
Because there arent any tissues
Because some people have complained that its 'unhygienic' for people to blow noses in the office'
Blowing doesnt stop it running

Outside
Because my nose runs like a tap whether its been blown or not
The 16 tissues I have in my pocket are already sodden, they cant absorb any more snot
The snot will be blown all over my face and scarf
Ive got gloves on so cant keep taking the gloves on and off every 30 seconds to blow the running tap

iamveryearlytoday · 07/02/2024 07:56

Eurgh, OP, YANBU!!!!!

I hate sniffers. Especially when they decline to blow their noses "because they don't need to".

Agix · 07/02/2024 07:57

Are these just general sniffers, or people with colds?

I work from home so thankfully don't annoy people with my sniffing, but if I have a cold (even just a mild one) once I blow it doesn't stop coming. I have to sniff unless I want to spend the next 30 mins sorting out a stream of gunk. I get through so many tissues if I have a sniffle, my body just seems to produce a hugely excess amount of snot. Blowing is like breaking the seal on it.

A sniff here and there is better than having to witness that I assure you 😄

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/02/2024 07:58

I agree. And people who do it on a packed commuter train deserve to live in the seventh circle of hell. Just find it mind-blowing that anyone could fail to realise how disgusting it is.

That looks weird like you are crying or trying to stop a sneeze. Plus you gonna have one arm permanently out ot use just staying there. We can hear the sniffles and blowing the nose, if you blow it we get longer peace from noise pollution than if you just keep sniffing into a tissue.

GettingBetter2024 · 07/02/2024 08:00

I hate sniffing.

Surprised some on here think it's okay or haven't researched how to blow their nose if they didn't lesrn as a child!

gannett · 07/02/2024 08:01

If the sound of sniffing offends you so much then the sound of a decent nose-blow won't exactly delight you. And it's rarely just the one nose-blow. I envy people with well-behaved sinuses.

Bunnyhopskip · 07/02/2024 08:02

I have frequent sinusitis and chronic rhinitis, all the blowing in the world won't make a difference, and I am a constant sniffer unfortunately 😞

One nostril at a time. Push one side closed and blow then swap.

The opposite of this thread was on here the other day started by someone saying nose blowing was outrageous and awful. I'd much rather hear a couple of good blows than than the 17 million little sniffs.

lifeispainauchocolat · 07/02/2024 08:07

DH has rhinitis and constantly feels like he be a blocked nose. Blowing does nothing as there's nothing there to come out.

The sniffing is annoying but much less annoying than feeling like he does everyday.

ohthehokey · 07/02/2024 08:08

Oh god...and on trains is the worst. Every single time I travel there's some snotty pillock sniffing wet boogers up their nose every ten seconds while I sit there seething.

I get this as well . I have a cold bug now. Its much worse in the morning . I also have nasal drip from the back of the nose it drips on the back of the throat. I end up chucking up mucus. My eyes water. I can't breath or talk properly. It's awful. I wish I could blow my nose and it will be all gone .
