Why don't people blow their bastard noses?

Sniff, sniff, sniff. You have snot in your nose, blow it!

Just got into the office. Big open plan monstrosity. 2 other people are in. They are both sniffing snot up their noses every 10 seconds or so, in stereo.

I offered the closest one to me my box of tissues. Oh, thanks, but I'm fine.

Its so annoying for others, but it MUST be annoying for them too, surely?

Mind you, it's light relief from the usual YouTube videos being played on full volume without headphones.

Or the shouted conversations had over multiple banks of desks. Or the pile of dirty dishes around the sink, on the draining board and in the sink. Or the box of mouldy lunch festering in the fridge.

God I hate the office.

You're right, Im going to get signed off today for 6 months with runny nose!!!

Ive had this for over 20 years, how long do you think I shouldnt be in work for it??!!! Im on specialist steroids and sprays, have had operations on my sinuses, its a condition people manage and they manage it by accepting they're full of snot

Also for those with well behaved sinuses (like that phrase), the snot you have isnt always just in your nose, its often just stuck there at the back of your throat, the only way of getting this out of there so you dont choke is by snorting it back.

HTH

If you meant me. I have to get my kids to school I have no choice. It also normally lasts around 3 weeks or so for me. My kids can't have 3 weeks of school.

Funkyslippers · 07/02/2024 08:23

I'm a bit of a sniffer but I have allergies which I assume are to do with my cats. I blow my nose a lot too but doesn't make any difference. Sniffing doesn't bother me unless it's a huge grunt type snort

AlwaysFreezing · 07/02/2024 08:27

We've had a nose blow! One of the chaps tema mates walked in, said, you still ill? Here you are, blow yer nose. It'll help. And he did! Yay!

Ah, for all the chronic sniffers out there, sorry to hear that you're stuck like this. That must suck.

You work with inconsiderate arseholes

maybe inconsiderate arseholes with a fondness for cocaine, i always wonder about people that constantly sniff whether it's a cold an allergy or cocaine.

Terrible confession here…I don’t understand how to blow my nose. I know that sounds weird, I mean, you just blow? But it just doesn’t do anything when I try, I just breathe out heavily. How do people get that trumpet nose when they blow their nose? How don’t I have this skill? I’m sorry if my sniffles ever annoy someone, I just can’t help it!

DS? Is that you?

SummaLuvin · 07/02/2024 09:24

something I found out when I had HORRENDOUS hayfever last year is that if it's allergies causing nasal irritation then blowing your nose can make it worse as you move all those around and increase irritation, sniffing is recommended there.

PurplePansy05 · 07/02/2024 09:26

I fucking hate this SO MUCH. Honestly I think I'm misophonic, but this particular sound makes me feel sick and enraged. Besides, it is GROSS.

WandaWonder · 07/02/2024 09:32

And for the extra touch a wet sloppy sniff like the ocean is up the nose

lifeispainauchocolat · 07/02/2024 08:07

DH has rhinitis and constantly feels like he be a blocked nose. Blowing does nothing as there's nothing there to come out.

The sniffing is annoying but much less annoying than feeling like he does everyday.

Agree. Blocked sinuses are awful. I remember constantly being told to blow my nose in school, no thanks that'll just make it worse!

gerteddy · 07/02/2024 09:38

I do apologise for being that person sometimes on the train! It is annoying for the person too. It's not always a case of blowing the nose sometimes it's just a thin clear liquid that's running down and if u blow ur nose nothing really comes out.

Theres also other times when it's thick mucus. There is no way u cld blow that out in public! The noise is unreal and it takes several goes to try and clear it plus u wld no doubt see some of this thick green yellow mucus coming out 🤮 tissues are not big enough for the amount that was coming out of me a while ago. I used to have to go to the toilet in the office as no way cld I do it in public. It gave relief for 10mins then it wld come back 😂 I can't keep running off the toilet every 10mins so ofcourse I end up sniffing and it annoys the life out of me too!

FluffMagnet · 07/02/2024 09:39

I know my sniffs drive various family members mad (and presumably colleagues too) but blowing my nose makes me more stuffed up, my nose run even more and usually causes a very painful pressure at the back of my nose. To add to irritations, I also suffer terribly from coughs (usually for 1-2 months following a cold, and any time i am badly stressed). I wish I could just "gently blow", and it sort everything out for the next hour, but for some reason my body does not play like that. I know the sound is irritating, but try living with it!

I was just about to come on and say that blowing my nose has always made it worse for me and I didn't know why, and I think you might have just answered something that's bothered me for years!
I try desperately not to sniff as I know how annoying it is, but if I blow my nose, it runs 10x the amount it was doing before for at least an hour afterwards, so I make more noise overall!! I suspect I have a deviated septum though, no idea if that would have any impact.

ColleenDonaghy · 07/02/2024 09:41

So the following is annoying to someone:

  • sniffling
  • nose blowing (small and ineffectual)
  • nose blowing (large)
  • sniffing and swallowing the snot

Do you people never get colds and runny noses?! Do you think people should just spend the week in the loo dealing with snot?

Mariposistaaa · 07/02/2024 09:47

I also hate that gentle nose blowing when you ave to do it about 10 times. Give your nose one good hard blow and that's that.
Snorting is also horrible.

DewinDwl · 07/02/2024 09:48

Bunnyhopskip · 07/02/2024 08:02

I have frequent sinusitis and chronic rhinitis, all the blowing in the world won't make a difference, and I am a constant sniffer unfortunately 😞

This.

I hate noise and wipe and blow my nose as quietly as I can. I have year round allergic rhinitis. In the spring and the autumn I am dealing with volumes of snot you cannot imagine - so that even taking a quiet breath in between nose blowing will sound like sniffling / snorting to you.

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/02/2024 09:48

With my current cold, sometimes blowing clears nothing, produces nothing.. but a good backwards snort-sniff does.

I don't like it, but either option is frankly revolting sounding and I will pick the one that results in it being easier for me to breath over the one that others find less offensive.

I don't think people realise how horrible it is to have problems like this . I feel very self conscious. I feel embarrassed. I choke , cough , eyes water . Then on top of that I can feel the judgment. I hate it .

Missingmyusername · 07/02/2024 09:50

I’m with you. Also hate the snot gobbling - where it drips down the throat and they make a noise like a pig and swallow. 🤮 One girl in the office makes this noise. Constantly. I feel like heaving.

Same :( there is nothing to be blown out half the time and believe me I've tried.

You better hope you never have this problem.

Muffit · 07/02/2024 11:16

Be more sympathetic to the poor snotty nosed people.
I blow my nose all the time .I had covid, now the flu.I am snoring at night! I am a snotty snoring mess.
My nose is so blocked up,I wish it wasn't like this I really do.
I am doing all I can to umblock myself, including inhailing. When I don't have a cold, covid flu,I have hayfever allergies.

That reminds me I will do a nose wash now!
I am a real person,, not a bot, if I was a bot I could be less snotty whixh might be nice.

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 07/02/2024 11:20

I hate blowing my nose. It hurts, it makes a horrible noise, and changes the pressure in my ears which also hurts. Moreover, for some reason it never seems to actually get the blockage clear, just congests me worse (I assume because the passages swell up from all that pressure).

It's my damn nose, and as long as I'm not getting snot on you it's none of your business what I do with it.

SNNNNNNIIIIIIIIIIIIFFFFF.

New2024 · 07/02/2024 11:24

Oh no another one about normal things that only Mumsnetters think should be restricted to cupboards/loos. If they are sniffing it’s likely it’s not a nose blow situation. If they are nose blowing then unless you still have a COVID times type policy of ‘ill people work from home’ put up with it
