To suspect that this was not the compliment she thought it was

I bumped into an old neighbour I used to be friendly with, my eldest dc is in the same year as hers, they go different schools, but always got on when playing out together which is how we became friendly.
Anyway, my youngest dc is a few months old now and she had a look in the pram and asked her name and when I told her she said, "that's lovely, I wouldn't have thought you'd use a name like that", so I asked her why not and she said, "Oh I'd have just expected something a bit chavvy, but it's very classic".

So in true British fashion I thanked her. What a fucking pleb I am 😂

I don't think it was meant as a compliment. She was very rude.

CantFindTheBeat · 02/02/2024 14:29

What a cow!

Can't think she meant it as a compliment.

Why is it we are conditioned to ignore things that are so rude - I bet you have 1000 things you'd say to her now, OP!

sprigatito · 02/02/2024 14:29

I don't think she thought it was a compliment!

What a ghastly woman. Her name isn't Amanda, is it?

mightydolphin · 02/02/2024 14:33

I probably would have said that you almost went with her name/her DD's name but it had awful associations 😅. What a cowbag.

She has Amanda vibes now you've said it. All leggy and lovely hair.

Cow 😂😂😂

You thanked her!!!!!! That is priceless. Made me chuckle.

You have the high ground.

And I bet you have thought of a few choice responses you might have used since.

Lwrenn · 02/02/2024 14:37

@mightydolphin I'm normally relatively quick but she had me so off-guard! So I had nothing, nothing to reply except, "thank you".

And then I pushed my wee chardonnay-destinee back home 😂

You must be kicking yourself OP. If you live to be 200 you'll never have a better opportunity to say "Did you mean to be so rude?"

Lwrenn · 02/02/2024 14:45

I'm so annoyed at myself.
Thank you.

Fucking thank you 🤦🏼‍♀️

Anything would have been better than just being stood there like a plum thanking her.

Also my eldest DC doesn't have a name that would exclude him from going to katie hopkins house or anything so she just thinks I'm a chav.

(Last time I'm inviting her to sit on my couch.
That I keep in my front garden 😁)

You have manners and class OP - she has neither!!

I wonder if she didn't like the name of your eldest. Are the names very different?

What an odd comment regardless! Can't believe you thanked her 😂

WeddingDressQuest · 02/02/2024 15:08

So funny. I would love to know the names.

OneTC · 02/02/2024 15:09

She didn't think that was a compliment but that would also have had me so off guard I'd probably still be standing there now with my mouth open😅

afkonholidaynearleek · 02/02/2024 15:12

I love that you thanked her 😂

Nicebloomers · 02/02/2024 15:17

An old lady once asked me my eldests name when he was a babe in arms and when I told her she went ‘UGH! is that a family name?’ And I was so shocked I had no response except ‘no it’s not’. Cheeky Evil Edna. His name is classic but not super common. Think Sebastian or Alasdair.

I hope baby La-a Neveah wasn’t insulted 😉

Sinkapace · 02/02/2024 15:21

I can’t believe you thought she might have intended that as a compliment, OP! She was really rude!

Every time you encounter her in the playground, shriek ‘Come here, Chardonnay-Destiny!’

EnjoyingTheSilence · 02/02/2024 15:21

Tell me your British without saying your British!

Love that you thanked her. What a cow!

Congrats on your baby!

sprigatito · 02/02/2024 15:23

The great thing is, you totally took the wind out of her sails by thanking her. She's probably still wondering whether you just didn't get it, or you just smoothly outplayed her.

🤣🤣

ZekeZeke · 02/02/2024 15:28

Well are you going to tell us your eldest name?
If its a chav name she obviously expected you to follow suit.

galliverstravels · 02/02/2024 15:36

Unlike her you have class and manners- which is impressive for such a chav like yourself 😉 😛

dephlogisticated · 02/02/2024 15:49

The 'thank you' was genius, albeit unintentional! You absolutely took the moral high ground and her insult was like water off the proverbial ducks back!

bawbells · 02/02/2024 15:51

Is it at all possible she doesn't know what chavvy means?

This is going back some years but the term 'chavvie' was used in local circles as meaning something like 'my little chum', rather childlike.

KreedKafer · 02/02/2024 15:54

I bet this horrible woman boasts about how she 'tells it like it is' and 'speaks her mind'. What an absolute cow.
