To suspect that this was not the compliment she thought it was

I bumped into an old neighbour I used to be friendly with, my eldest dc is in the same year as hers, they go different schools, but always got on when playing out together which is how we became friendly.
Anyway, my youngest dc is a few months old now and she had a look in the pram and asked her name and when I told her she said, "that's lovely, I wouldn't have thought you'd use a name like that", so I asked her why not and she said, "Oh I'd have just expected something a bit chavvy, but it's very classic".

So in true British fashion I thanked her. What a fucking pleb I am 😂

This is amazing, I agree it's better that she didn't see you were offended. Too bad you don't see her more often to be able to snootily ignore her from now on though 😂

KreedKafer · 02/02/2024 15:56

bawbells · 02/02/2024 15:51

Is it at all possible she doesn't know what chavvy means?

This is going back some years but the term 'chavvie' was used in local circles as meaning something like 'my little chum', rather childlike.

If she was using 'chavvie' in that sense (which I strongly doubt, as it wasn't even a widely-used term 40 years ago, let alone now) her comment wouldn't make any sense, as it wouldn't have any relevance to names.

Let's not be naive, here. She was being really fucking rude.

FictionalCharacter · 02/02/2024 16:06

That's what used to be known as a back-handed compliment. What a nasty cowbag she is.

bawbells · 02/02/2024 16:07

Well it could be possible she was using the word in that sense; oh I was expecting a cutesy childlike name as opposed to a classic name.

It seems so off-the-scale rude for no apparent reason that I feel there must be something else at play there.

MsMcGonagall · 02/02/2024 16:14

Lwrenn · 02/02/2024 14:45

I'm so annoyed at myself.
Thank you.

Fucking thank you 🤦🏼‍♀️

Anything would have been better than just being stood there like a plum thanking her.

Also my eldest DC doesn't have a name that would exclude him from going to katie hopkins house or anything so she just thinks I'm a chav.

(Last time I'm inviting her to sit on my couch.
That I keep in my front garden 😁)

Sorry she said this @Lwrenn

I can't follow all the double negatives - does your eldest have a chav or a classic name?

I would obviously love to know the names but understand you can't share. Maybe share "equivalents "?

Lwrenn · 02/02/2024 16:16

My eldest is drumroll... Jack! 😂

Baby's name is Eleanor, but we call her Ellie.

Really very underwhelming names to read written down. Poor Ellie is getting Chardonnay from now on 😂

I just told DP what happened and he said thanking her was the power move that the conversation needed.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 02/02/2024 16:22

Lexus is a nice nickname for Eleanor, just saying.

The obvious thing is my accent (scouse) but I'm not poorly spoken, I just have more of an accent than they do where I live now, on the Wirral. In fairness to Amanda as she'll forever be known, she is very well spoken.

DiamondGazette · 02/02/2024 16:44

Did she really use the term chavvy? I wouldn't even say that if I was introduced to a baby called Amiiee-Jayde. How condescending and rude.

She did! My DS just got home and I told him about it and his response was, "at least she didn't call you a scally".

Every cloud I suppose 😂

I can't see any double negatives there at all.

Was she trying to bring you down a peg or two because you've gone over to the Wirral?

Oh sorry, she's from here, we moved over when I was wee so I've lived on her street on the Wirral.

She always seemed nice, maybe I'm just completely oblivious usually or it was just clumsy worded.

Is Jack short for something chavvy (Jackkonah-Heaven)?

It is now 😂

If I bump into her again with my other DS I'm saying they're named majesty-tyson and Prince-okayden.

Fucking brilliant thread, op, thank you. You have really made me laugh. And thank god I’m not the only one who thanks others for being rude and then kicks myself repeatedly for the next week 🤣🤣🤣

😂😂😂 If someone pushes past you in the street do you immediately say, "oops, sorry!" Even if it was 100% them because I do without fail 🙈

It's so British isn't it? Like apologising to a burglar that you haven't tided before they broke in.

I bloody thanked her.

What. A. Bitch.

Namechangesab · 02/02/2024 19:37

What a cow!

But yes I also apologise to people pushing past me and thank people for really rude shit. It's very British.

Jack and Ellie are so classic and inoffensive, lovely names, wtf 😅. Defo introduce them by their new chavtastic names next time you see her!

ALongHardWinter · 02/02/2024 19:48

How rude!

blueskies23 · 02/02/2024 20:03

I'd change her name, so next time you see her if her name is "Mercedes" say "oh hello, Lada".

PudgeControlsTheWeather · 02/02/2024 20:11

You and your family sound lovely!

Some people just can't help being nasty. Says more about them than about you.

You and your DP sounds really sweet.

She was being a rude cow.

Is there a cultural difference? Because I fail to see how she could have meant it as a compliment.

I also strongly dislike people who disguise rudeness as “being blunt” or “saying it like it is”

It costs nothing to be kind.

Rumpelslutskin · 02/02/2024 21:16

Thank you was a perfect reply.
She never intended it as a compliment.the fucking cow.

You must be kicking yourself OP. If you live to be 200 you'll never have a better opportunity to say "Did you mean to be so rude?"

Yes, that would have been the perfect response!!!

However, these things never occur to us until after the event, unfortunately.
