AIBU for wanting handsoap in the kitchen ?

We live with our in laws at the moment and there has never been hand soap in the kitchen. I got some at the weekend as the closest place to wash hands with soap is the bathroom.

Anyway, MIL keeps putting it away from next to the sink. I'm not going to put it out again next to the kitchen sink as it's her house. But I feel like having handsoap when preparing food is important

I'm with you OP

SecondUsername4me · 30/01/2024 15:41

Yeah it's essential surely?!

LittleRebelGirl · 30/01/2024 15:41

I wouldn't want it next to the sink either, I'd put it in the cupboard under.

YANBU

Lots of people don't though & lots dabble their fingers under the tap then dry them on the t towel ( that looks filthy). Boak

murasaki · 30/01/2024 15:42

What's her reasoning? I use it multiple times while cooking, e.g. between handling meat and veg, what does she do?

pyjamalife · 30/01/2024 15:43

There are people who don't have hand soap in the kitchen? Do they just use washing up liquid (which I would do, if I had absolutely no hand soap).

I'm by no means a domestic goddess, but I couldn't imagine not having soap in the kitchen.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 30/01/2024 15:43

Of course hand soap is normal next to the sink. You should wash your hands as part of food prep, it's basic stuff.

Yeah my MIL is a nurse so I thought she would want to wash her hands properly when cooking

In the cupboard means the hygienically slack will not bother. By the sink is the right place.

Yeah I do too , I continuously wash my hands between prepping food . Her reasoning is there is one in the bathroom

I just use a dab of washing up liquid when I’m in the kitchen. It’s all soap.
If someone is never using soap during food prep then that’s gross.

Nicebloomers · 30/01/2024 15:44

100% team hand soap. And touching cupboard doors to retrieve said soap is just spreading more germs. Aesthetics are all well and good but this is about health.

Unmute · 30/01/2024 15:45

Just use washing up liquid

marshmallowfinder · 30/01/2024 15:45

I used to live where a cloakroom was right next to the kitchen, so I'd always wash hands in there. Couldn't stand people doing it in the kitchen as they'd spatter soapy grimy hand water all over my clean things on the draining board and attempt to dry hands on my teatowel. 🤢 It therefore was a NO hand-wash sink, but all set up properly in the cloakroom for this! Could that be why, OP?

ComtesseDeSpair · 30/01/2024 15:45

I hate anything out on work surfaces. Hand soap lives in the cupboard below. I’d be irritated if somebody staying with me kept on trying to move it.

Yeah the nearest place is the bathroom so handling meat and then touching the bathroom door is grim.

When I don’t have hand soap I use washing up liquid. So you can do that too? Agree not ideal but nor is living at in laws’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

dastidlydaschel · 30/01/2024 15:46

Each to their own but it wouldn't even occur to me NOT to have soap next to a sink! Why wouldn't you?! Very odd.

Get hand soap before you begin touching food. Replace afterwards.

AhBiscuits · 30/01/2024 15:48

I use washing up liquid. Same thing.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 30/01/2024 15:48

I just use washing up liquid

catsnhats11 · 30/01/2024 15:49

YANBU and anyone suggesting washing up liquid clearly never actually does that, the consistence is way too thick and "soapy" and also harsher on your skin.

lazyarse123 · 30/01/2024 15:49

We have ours in cupboard under sink. We just get it out before preparing food then put it back after. It's not an arduous task.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 30/01/2024 15:49

So she'll touch raw meat and then go through a couple of doors to get to the downstairs loo? Sounds like she's just asking to accidentally contaminate a door handle or something with raw chicken etc.

Do you put bathroom handles soap in the cupboard too?
