AIBU for wanting handsoap in the kitchen ?

We live with our in laws at the moment and there has never been hand soap in the kitchen. I got some at the weekend as the closest place to wash hands with soap is the bathroom.

Anyway, MIL keeps putting it away from next to the sink. I'm not going to put it out again next to the kitchen sink as it's her house. But I feel like having handsoap when preparing food is important

It has honestly never occurred to me to have soap in the kitchen! I use washing up liquid whenever I need to wash my hands in the kitchen. We’re vegetarian so never handling raw meat so I suppose that cuts down a lot of the handwashing that people appear to be doing during cooking

@Dreamstosell

do you not wash your hands before you start cooking or preparing food?

Ginandjuice57884 · 30/01/2024 17:15

My mum seemed to think washing your hands in the kitchen sink was unhygienic. We did have a WC just outside the kitchen though so could wash hands there.

I get the point if you're washing actual dirt off but for preparing food it's essential IMHO.

YANBU and anyone suggesting washing up liquid clearly never actually does that, the consistence is way too thick and "soapy" and also harsher on your skin.

You’ve fallen for the marketing if you think unscented sensitive washing up liquid is harsher on skin than regular hand soap.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/01/2024 17:16

I felt very responsible when I bought a bottle of handsoap for the kitchen.

It's been sitting on the windowsill above the sink for six years. The washing up liquid is closer and does a better job, IMO.

Dreamstosell · 30/01/2024 17:18

@LuckySantangelo35 yes but in the downstairs toilet next door to the kitchen before cooking. If needed during cooking I use washing up liquid. As I said it has honestly never occurred to me to have soap here. But now it’s been suggested it seems like it might be a good idea and I’ve just placed a bottle beside the sink 🤣

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/01/2024 17:18

I’m cooking now. I washed my hands in the kitchen sink from a refillable soap dispenser before starting. Also washed between cutting chicken etc. Don’t want to have to traipse to the bathroom.

ClematisRock · 30/01/2024 17:19

@SpringViolet , surely the soapy suds will remove any germs on the bottle?

OP, it's her house so her rules.

Decant some liquid soap into a little bottle and carry it with you if it bothers you that much.

It’s not only cooking you need to wash your hands for either - after loading and before emptying dishwasher, after feeding pets, emptying bin etc? I wash mine before making a coffee, eating fruit, making sandwiches, cereal for breakfast, putting bread in toaster. In fact before handling any food. DH and DC trained too.

Do people really only take their soap out of a cupboard when cooking a meal?

It has never occured to me to wash my hands before emptying (or loading) the dishwasher, making a hot drink, making breakfast or feeding the cat (she eats pouches, so I simply rip the top off and put it in her bowl - no handling of cat food needed). I have never once, in 50 years, had any germ-related illness (neither has a member of my household).

Sodndashitall · 30/01/2024 17:20

Personally I find washing up liquid better for washing hands after food prep but I do have soap there too

DappledThings · 30/01/2024 17:25

That's a long list. I wouldn't automatically wash before any of those. Before making a coffee is the weirdest. What are you touching? The outside of a jar or a pod, a spoon, the handle of the milk bottle? Why would you wash your hands for that?

Same here - vegetarian and no hand soap in the kitchen. We tend to just use the bathroom, though we're in a single-level flat so it's not far away. If needed in a hurry during cooking, we use washing up liquid.

Flossflower · 30/01/2024 17:34

I have hand wash liquid next to the sink and I don’t like a lot of things on surfaces. I dry with kitchen roll. Washing up liquid would be too harsh.
I have noticed that people get irritated by other people putting things on their surfaces. Maybe it is time you moved out.

SouthEastCoast · 30/01/2024 17:34

I have hand soap and washing up liquid side by side. Can’t see the problem

Floralnomad · 30/01/2024 17:36

I’d be really concerned about the food hygiene processes with no soap in the kitchen - not sure I’d eat anything she’s prepared .

BingoMarieHeeler · 30/01/2024 17:38

Why don’t you guys just keep the soap/washing up liquid/sponges etc IN the sink??? Don’t like the look of them on the counter… can’t see inside the sink from across the room etc. Voila! Move them to the counter top when washing up etc - endure the ugliness for a few minutes during your task. Washing up is not exactly an aesthetically pleasing activity.

I'd just assume they used washing up liquid like the majority of people do

fairo · 30/01/2024 17:42

Disgusting. I wouldn't eat anything she cooks.

fairo · 30/01/2024 17:43

I bet there's raw chicken all over the house

RandomNameChoice · 30/01/2024 17:43

We have hand soap at the kitchen sink.

If I get Fairy Liquid on my fingers, whilst cleaning something directly with it, I find that I can't get rid of the feel of the Fairy from my skin even by rinsing with water.

So I would hate to use it as hand soap.

fairo · 30/01/2024 17:44

Don't use fairy liquid it will destroy your hands

Mouk · 30/01/2024 17:45

I'm with you. We always have hand soap in the kitchen. Surely in a room where you cook and prep food, it's essential?

Hedjwitch · 30/01/2024 17:47

I love an MN hygiene thread!

artfuldodgerjack · 30/01/2024 17:50

I use washing up liquid!

CurlewKate · 30/01/2024 18:05

I use a tiny bit of washing up liquid.

ViaRia01 · 30/01/2024 18:06

Sounds irritating but I think if I were you I’d leave it in the bathroom but bring it to the kitchen while cooking, then be sure to put it back in the bathroom afterwards. It’s her house so it’s her decision really… not worth falling out over.

my dad dislikes soap in the kitchen. I think he got it from his mother. I believe it was a bit of an irrational thought over the soapy taste/ smell getting into the food… not sure.

my mil keeps her kitchen hand soap in the cupboard under the sink because she dislikes the clutter on the worktop.
