AIBU for wanting handsoap in the kitchen ?

We live with our in laws at the moment and there has never been hand soap in the kitchen. I got some at the weekend as the closest place to wash hands with soap is the bathroom.

Anyway, MIL keeps putting it away from next to the sink. I'm not going to put it out again next to the kitchen sink as it's her house. But I feel like having handsoap when preparing food is important

YANBU and anyone suggesting washing up liquid clearly never actually does that, the consistence is way too thick and "soapy" and also harsher on your skin.

Except that I do every day and it's fine.

KreedKafer · 30/01/2024 15:52

YANBU at all. Not just for hygiene reasons but just because when you're cooking or eating there are times when your hands get sticky or whatever and you want to wash them properly. It wouldn't occur me not to have soap or handwash by my kitchen sink!

Obviously it's your MIL's house and her choice, so not much you can do I suppose, but I think it's odd unusual for someone not to have hand soap in the kitchen.

I hate anything out on work surfaces. Hand soap lives in the cupboard below. I’d be irritated if somebody staying with me kept on trying to move it.

So when your hands are all raw-chickeny how do you get it out without spreading salmonella all over your kitchen?

purplecorkheart · 30/01/2024 15:54

Personally I have never been in a kitchen where there isn't soap by the sink. i know you can use washing up liquid but I have quite dry skin so avoid using it.

I get the hand soap out from the cupboard before I begin prepping. Same as I do knives, boards and pans. It’s never struck me as particularly difficult.

YANBU at all. Handsoap at every sink - it's a major use for the sink surely? So you need the supplies there.

Well, that's great for you, but washing up liquid on my hands every day makes them red, sore and cracked around the knuckles.

I used to live where a cloakroom was right next to the kitchen, so I'd always wash hands in there. Couldn't stand people doing it in the kitchen as they'd spatter soapy grimy hand water all over my clean things on the draining board and attempt to dry hands on my teatowel. 🤢 It therefore was a NO hand-wash sink, but all set up properly in the cloakroom for this! Could that be why, OP?

How does that work when you're cooking?

I always wash after handling meat before going to the next thing.

KnickerlessParsons · 30/01/2024 15:56

I use washing up liquid, but I don't constantly wash my hands when cooking/prepping food. No one has died as far as I know

Flottie · 30/01/2024 15:56

I have hand soap in the sink caddy but if there’s none available I just use washing up liquid.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/01/2024 15:57

YANBU I always have hand soap next to the sink. I always have a hand towel too and don't use the tea towel as has been suggested.

That's bollocks (sorry)

I wouldn't want it next to the sink either, I'd put it in the cupboard under.

Why?! To get it out and put away every time you need to wash your hands?!

Hankunamatata · 30/01/2024 15:59

Hand soap needs to be next to the sink

How does that work when you're cooking?

I always wash after handling meat before going to the next thing.

Before handling the meat, I'd always put the plug in and put warm water ready in that cloakroom sink. So I could just pop in to wash. No raw meat spatters over kitchen draining board. It worked well.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 30/01/2024 16:03

Lovely BBW kitchen hand wash next to sink by kitchen roll stand or there's a clean hand towel near by. Some overly house proud people can be pretty minging.

EmmaStone · 30/01/2024 16:04

Hand soap next to sink (to use before cooking), BUT when cooking I also have a fresh bowl of hot soapy water on the go which I use for quick hand wash.

Awumminnscotland · 30/01/2024 16:04

I don't remember hand soap in the kitchen when I was a kid in the 70s. There would have been a hard soap that would have washed everything including grimy shirt collars and kids in the sink. We were always sent to wash our hands in the bathroom before meals etc as that's where the towel was. We must have just used washing up liquid. Money was tight, I'm presuming the liquid version of the soap was thought to be sufficient.
I do use soap in the kitchen now.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/01/2024 16:05

Hand wash needs to be next to the sink
If it's in the cupboard then you need to open it with dirty hands
Yes I guess you can use washing up liquid but that would crack the skin on my hands!
Annoying but could you decant some into a squeezy travel bottle and keep it on you?

DeerWithNoEye · 30/01/2024 16:06

What’s the reasoning of people who refuse to have soap by the sink? Because it looks messy?!
I expect these people must also only eat takeaways to make sure their oven isn’t used so stays sparkling?
surely a kitchen is a functional room and so things needed should be easily available

Oh behave! We use Fairy and ot does the job perfectly; you add water like with any soap.
I do also have hand soap out but most people go for the Fairy or use the basin in the cloakroom next door.

SecondUsername4me · 30/01/2024 16:08

If my sink is empty when I start cooking I'll fill it with hot soapy water and use that to wash my hands as I go, and a dumping bath for all the utensils I used while cooking, but nothing beats proper soap and a hand-wash.

So you don't have soap by the basin in your bathroom?

occa · 30/01/2024 16:09

YADNBU and keeping it in the cupboard is also gross. Who wants raw chicken germs on cupboard handles 🤮

AmethystSparkles · 30/01/2024 16:10

We do have soap out but liquid soap is a fairly recent invention you know. Until maybe fifteen years ago we used washing up liquid. Not sure if others used bar soap but that seems a bit grim.
