Questioned over Covid tests in Tesco

So I bought two Covid tests with my quickly shop. Young male cashier picked them up, held them up and said, "do I have anything to worry about?'. I said what do you mean. He said "these, do I have anything to worry about - if you have it I have it". I said you probably don't, and paid. I'm irritated though! They weren't even for me, but if they were I wouldn't fancy having my health issues publicised! Am I being unreasonable to be a bit irritated?

With my weekly shop I mean, not quickly shop

No, if he’s so concerned he shouldn’t have a public facing job. Does he question everyone buying cough medicine I wonder?

Floralnomad · 21/01/2024 15:11

He was just probably making conversation

IHS · 21/01/2024 15:11

I'd actually complain about that. He needs to keep his smart arse comments to himself.

QueenBean22 · 21/01/2024 15:13

little smart arse. Complain

Chouette77 · 21/01/2024 15:14

He could have made conversation about the heavy flow tampons I bought too, that would be preferable

Thought he was being funny.

Itslegitimatesalvage · 21/01/2024 15:16

I had the exact same comment from a smart ass very young man on the till… but I was buying a pregnancy test. He really did put on a proper pleased with himself face when he said, “Do I have anything to worry about?” like it was the funniest joke he’d told.

But I don’t think your guy was being a dickhead joker. He was just being a dickhead. He has no right to comment or ask about your health in any way, and if he doesn’t want to risk communicable diseases then he needs another job.

cansu · 21/01/2024 15:16

Hugely inappropriate.

araiwa · 21/01/2024 15:18

Didn't this pleb know who you were? Outrageous

DidntReallyMeanIt · 21/01/2024 15:18

Sounds like a joke that didn't land well with you 🤷‍♂️

BobbyBiscuits · 21/01/2024 15:19

During the 'bed bug' hysteria/ outbreak from France recently, I spotted a very chubby bed bug crawling across the conveyour in Waitrose. I pointed silently to it to a staff member and he just laughed and said "no, it's not one of those'. Well, even so theres a massive fucking bug on your conveyour? OMG, grim.

SweetBirdsong · 21/01/2024 15:19

I think he was joking! Grin

Chouette77 · 21/01/2024 15:19

Meh, I'm not going to complain, maybe it was a joke, I was just embarrassed

Was he attempting to be funny? Not that it's appropriate, he shouldn't have commented.

I once had a cashier wave a box of pregnancy tests in my face at the tills and say "oooh are you hoping for one line or 2?!" [Hmm]

I just smiled at her and did an awkward laugh. She then asked me if I could go and take one in the shop toilets and come back and let her know the result!

I laugh about it now but at the time I was gobsmacked she would think this was OK request to ask a customer.

Ewww, that IS creepy! Shock

CharlotteMakepeace · 21/01/2024 15:22

Poor bloke was only being light hearted.

If he really was worried you had the pox etc he would have made the sign of a cross. 🙄

Fuckitydoodah · 21/01/2024 15:24

Sounds like a poor attempt at trying to be funny. I couldn't get worked up about it. Let it go and get on with your day.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 21/01/2024 15:25

Sales workers should be seen and not heard. Utter impudence. You should definitely complain to the store manager.

Please tell me you’re being ironic.

NotQuiteNorma · 21/01/2024 15:28

Are people running out of things to be offended about these days?

Karensalright · 21/01/2024 15:28

I would have said, i dont know if you have anything to worry about YET do I?

And then coughed a lot.

Hiddenvoice · 21/01/2024 15:29

I think he was joking but he may not have been and might have genuinely been worried that he’s come into contact with someone who has covid. Personally I wouldn’t complain.
