Questioned over Covid tests in Tesco

Chouette77 · 21/01/2024 15:03

So I bought two Covid tests with my quickly shop. Young male cashier picked them up, held them up and said, "do I have anything to worry about?'. I said what do you mean. He said "these, do I have anything to worry about - if you have it I have it". I said you probably don't, and paid. I'm irritated though! They weren't even for me, but if they were I wouldn't fancy having my health issues publicised! Am I being unreasonable to be a bit irritated?

Yes you are utterly unreasonably. He was chatting to you nothing more. It could have been a joke or he could have concerned about catching covid. Either way it's nothing to post about.

^ This. It was light conversation / a joke.

Wow.

What a horrible attitude.

I read this as @TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum being sarcastic?

Groovy48592747 · 21/01/2024 15:39

He was being very rude. Customer serving staff shouldn't put you on the spot like that, general chit chat of course, but questioning you like that was not right. Sounds like he needs some training.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/01/2024 15:47

I think he was just making a little joke. COVID is not a sensitive or personal subject, so I wouldn't consider it intrusive.

edissa · 21/01/2024 15:49

Karensalright · 21/01/2024 15:28

I would have said, i dont know if you have anything to worry about YET do I?

And then coughed a lot.

😂

Are people running out of things to be offended about these days?

It’s evident some people have a long, long list to make their way through. At least another decade of offence to be taken.

MadeOfAllWork · 21/01/2024 15:53

I know in some retail jobs the cashier is expected by HQ to comment on something you buy. It’s more common in clothes shop, a passing comment on what a nice colour the top is or how soft the scarf is. Perhaps they’ve brought this in at Tesco.

Imagine buying only tampons and the cashier stating he also has a wide set vagina 😂

I know. Or just a packet of condoms or anti diarrhoea medicine.

BreatheAndFocus · 21/01/2024 16:04

We were told never to comment on people’s shopping when I worked in a supermarket. It’s rude and unnecessary.

I had someone the other day who commented on almost every item I bought. It was very aggravating. I just ignore them and break eye contact. I’m sure there’s a sketch online about this but I don’t remember which show it was from.

Zodfa · 21/01/2024 16:06

Always found the popular conception that any and all health information is Highly Confidential a bit odd to be honest. Like some kind of Victorian relic.

He was probably just making conversation.

RoomOfRequirement · 21/01/2024 16:07

Obviously a joke comment. I can't even fathom getting minorly irritated.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/01/2024 16:07

I had the same reaction when I bought tests recently. It never crossed my mind to complain or be irritated.

BeaRF75 · 21/01/2024 16:08

The checkout person was being silly, but equally I can't think of any reason why someone would waste their money on these tests - they're unnecessary.

Maddy70 · 21/01/2024 16:14

cathcath2 · 21/01/2024 16:15

YABU, it was either a joke or he was genuinely worried. I always say that the Covid tests either aren't for me (yes, I have bought shopping for people with Covid) or they are just a precaution so I don't take Covid into vulnerable relatives (also true).

Nonomono · 21/01/2024 16:17

I assume it was just a joke.

Lots of people say things like this.

User1775 · 21/01/2024 16:21

I'd have coughed a few times and said "WHAT????" nice and loud. That would have shut him up 😂

VaccineSticker · 21/01/2024 16:22

Get over yourself.

cariadlet · 21/01/2024 16:27

He's probably been told by his bosses that he should make small talk with customers and this was his clumsy attempt which failed badly.

Sad that some people would complain about something so trivial.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 21/01/2024 16:31

Why did any conversation need to be made?

Floatinginatincan · 21/01/2024 16:32

Sounds like he was just trying to make a jokey comment. Have you ever worked on a check out?. It's boring as shit & you have the same conversation over & over again whilst listening to the same 20 songs on repeat. Sometimes, you try to make a joke just to mix it up a bit.

Doyoumind · 21/01/2024 16:32

It was clearly a joke. I don't know why it embarrassed you.

There's a man in a shop local to me (that doesn't have a self checkout) who always comments on what you're buying or makes inane conversation. I avoid him if I can but I don't have any kind of emotional reaction to his comments. Why should anything he says matter to me?

TorroFerney · 21/01/2024 16:37

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 21/01/2024 15:25

Sales workers should be seen and not heard. Utter impudence. You should definitely complain to the store manager.

It’s not that, they should just not comment on what people are buying. Years ago I had a temp job in marks. A bloke used to come in every morning I assume on his way to work and buy vodka, obviously had a problem. Colleague in the till I worked with had to comment on that”ooh are you having a party tonight”. No , no he isn’t. She obviously didn’t realise which is fine lucky her but just don’t comment. Just do what they do in booths instead and examine every item as they scan it thereby increasing the time it takes to serve a customer.
