Straight women, were/are you aware that Jodie Foster is gay?

Been mildly curious about this for a while. I’m a gay woman and my loving well-meaning mother will occasionally make slightly clumsy attempts to bring up gay films or famous gay women that she assumes I must be interested in because they are also gay (e.g. Ellen Page as was). But she has never mentioned Jodie Foster, and although I haven’t tested it I get the impression she isn’t aware, maybe partly because although JF is now ten years married to a woman she has never quite made the big ‘I am gay’ speech.

AIBU to think a lot of straight women still haven’t really noticed that Jodie Foster is gay? And, if I’m wrong, when did you become aware?

YABU - I know, I’ve known for ages, yawn

YANBU - I didn’t know, or didn’t know until very recently, but anyway, yawn

OBVIOUSLY what matters is her acting, but I am mildly curious about what causes someone’s gayness to register/not register with the wider public

Also, side note. I'm watching True Detective and googled her age. I can't believe she's 61, she looks amazeballs.

Gosh really?! Shock In my head she is 45! Grin

SydneyCarton · 21/01/2024 14:58

@pickledandpuzzled Do you mean Candleshoe? She plays a character called Casey and it involves a stately home with a group of children living there

Must be!! Thank you. I’ll go and look for it.

I don’t pay attention to who is in what but some faces/actors just stand out.

miniaturepixieonacid · 21/01/2024 15:06

I think I assumed she is but not sure I actually knew.

My assumption can only come from the way she comes across in films as a teeanger because I haven't seen much of her as an adult. But her style would have been far more common for a girl in the 1970s, wouldn't it. So, I don't really know why I 'knew'. Maybe I did read it somewhere, I don't know. It probably wouldn't have registered much with me.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 21/01/2024 15:06

I didn't know, and couldn't care less either.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/01/2024 15:07

I knew that, because she was married to a lady and they had children so I felt it was implied.

SweetBirdsong · 21/01/2024 15:07

Just wondering @MNUse why are you only asking straight women? Are you assuming all the straight women don't know, but the gay women do? Grin

InvisibleBuffy · 21/01/2024 15:08

Yes, I've known for ages. I think its a good question and raises a lot of hard questions about how we treat people in the public eye.
On the one hand, it's great for younger lesbians especially to see representation on screen and high profile lesbians being accepted for who they are.
On the other, as with JF, her private life isn't anyone's business and she doesn't owe it to anyone to put her love life out in public for everyone to comment on.
Someone mentioned Rebel Wilson upthread. What happened with her was particularly despicable.

Bonjovispjs · 21/01/2024 15:08

Yep, known for years.

Blueblell · 21/01/2024 15:09

I have always known - in fact I think she was the first actress I knew to be gay. So yes a long time

MNUse · 21/01/2024 14:21

Gay people, homophobes, and people who like celebrity gossip. HTH.

I am none of those, and I still don't care. The consenting sexual preferences of people I don't know and who are simply actors are really not of interest. I'm more interested in their acting ability based on the fact that that is all I need to know.

Mercurial123 · 21/01/2024 15:11

I'm surprised you don't know. It's hardly a secret.

I’m not assuming straight women don’t know - I’m asking - but yeah I am assuming gay women know, unless they’re too young to have connected with any gay culture/community, or to know who she is!

You have reminded me that I heard she was married to a woman years ago. I think the reason I had forgotten is because it is so completely and utterly unimportant.

Why do some people think that every gay person has a responsibility to shout about their sexuality, or that they have to become part of the LGBTXYZ "community? It's so tedious.

Her career as one of the greatest actors of our time is a far more important definition of who she is and what she has achieved. Her sexuality is obviously a private matter for Jodie Foster and her wife.

Yes. Always known. And the fuss about it is????

DerekFaker · 21/01/2024 15:15

Yes i was

QuestionableMouse · 21/01/2024 15:16

Honestly other people's sexuality doesn't really feel like my business. 🤷

FUPAgirl · 21/01/2024 15:17

I knew she had a wife but can't say I've given it any thought. The sexuality of others is none of my business and I have no interest generally in gossip. Let people live their lives in peace.

I've just mentioned this to my gay DD and she says she has no interest in info like this either. She's only interested in people she actually knows in real life.

The OP isn't making a fuss ... 🙄 Good grief, calm down.

gluggle · 21/01/2024 15:19

Yes have known this for years

CurlewKate · 21/01/2024 15:19

I do love how people pretend they're above/not interested in gossip!

I am-and yes I did know.

FUPAgirl · 21/01/2024 15:21

Why is it pretending?? I genuinely have no interest in 'celebrities', why would I lie about that? What a bizarre post 🤣

Riverlee · 21/01/2024 15:21

Maybe your mother has not mentioned Jodie Foster is because she had as kept her private life, well private. Regardless of whether she was gay or straight, she’s not a ‘celebrity celebrity’, but more just a famous actress (if that makes sense) so she’s not someone you automatically think of.

theemmadilemma · 21/01/2024 15:21

I think she was probably one of the first gay women I was aware of way back when it was rare to be so open. So yes.
