Straight women, were/are you aware that Jodie Foster is gay?

Been mildly curious about this for a while. I’m a gay woman and my loving well-meaning mother will occasionally make slightly clumsy attempts to bring up gay films or famous gay women that she assumes I must be interested in because they are also gay (e.g. Ellen Page as was). But she has never mentioned Jodie Foster, and although I haven’t tested it I get the impression she isn’t aware, maybe partly because although JF is now ten years married to a woman she has never quite made the big ‘I am gay’ speech.

AIBU to think a lot of straight women still haven’t really noticed that Jodie Foster is gay? And, if I’m wrong, when did you become aware?

OBVIOUSLY what matters is her acting, but I am mildly curious about what causes someone’s gayness to register/not register with the wider public

I knew and I can’t remember how / when I found out so it must have been a very long time ago.

Does anyone remember a programme about a children’s home? I thought it was called Casey’s Court, and she was in it, but can’t find any reference to it.

Really struggling to understand why her sexuality matters or is of any interest to anyone.

As for sleb goss, OP, I do think I knew pre 2013 as there was speculation that her boys (IVF) were made by sperm donated from either Mel Gibson or Randy Stone.

I didn't know. I don't know anything about her private life really.
It would be good to get to a stage where people don't have to come out or make an announcement, they can just get on with their lives like straight people do.

@hellojelly It was a slip, I meant a lot of gay men. You know what I meant though, women have had to keep their sexuality private so that they don't get the wrong sort of attention from straight men, who need to make it all about them. Another generalisation for you ;-)

I was aware of this, yes. I don't think it's a secret. I also don't think it's important in any way to anyone apart from Foster herself and any romantic partners.

Peoples sexuality doesn't bother me though, it's not a feature of them that I'm concerned with.

I am a bug fan of jodie foster and respect her for keeping her private life private.

I knew (long term fab of her work) but suspect she is relatively less ‘known’ as a lesbian, as she came out quietly such a long one ago and has never been keen on the ‘poster girl’ role. She’s an amazing actor and an impressive person. And to all those saying ‘who cares’ - personally I’d say the more visibility of difference - whether it’s sex, sexuality, race, age, disability in our ‘prominant people’ the better: it helps break down rigid expectations and gives those who both are and feel disadvanged, esp in certain roles/worlds the role models they need and deserve.

No, I wasn’t, but that’s hardly surprising as celebrity gossip isn’t really my thing and I have zero interest in the sexuality of famous people.

She's has been married for 10yrs & was with someone called Cynthia(?) for at least 10yrs before that!

I also struggled as a child/young teen to understand why it mattered, but believe it or not it seemed to matter quite a bit to the ubiquitously homophobic society I grew up with in the uk in the 90s and 00s, which in turn had quite a big impact on the mental health and ability to form relationships of me and other gay people I know from that period, decades into our adulthood, so although I’d love it not to matter, in practice it has mattered quite a lot. How lovely that you have so little experience of this that you can ask such clueless questions. Lucky you.

Open secret but not newsworthy/the press left her alone for the main part as outing people became more frowned upon (shame that Rebel Wilson wasn't given the same treatment).
