Straight women, were/are you aware that Jodie Foster is gay?

Been mildly curious about this for a while. I’m a gay woman and my loving well-meaning mother will occasionally make slightly clumsy attempts to bring up gay films or famous gay women that she assumes I must be interested in because they are also gay (e.g. Ellen Page as was). But she has never mentioned Jodie Foster, and although I haven’t tested it I get the impression she isn’t aware, maybe partly because although JF is now ten years married to a woman she has never quite made the big ‘I am gay’ speech.

AIBU to think a lot of straight women still haven’t really noticed that Jodie Foster is gay? And, if I’m wrong, when did you become aware?

YABU - I know, I’ve known for ages, yawn

YANBU - I didn’t know, or didn’t know until very recently, but anyway, yawn

OBVIOUSLY what matters is her acting, but I am mildly curious about what causes someone’s gayness to register/not register with the wider public

I knew. Can't remember when I found out.

W0tnow · 21/01/2024 14:47

I’ve known for a long time. Probably the penny dropped way later than it should have though. By the by…I absolutely adore her and think she is very beautiful.

Here’s a question for you @MNUse , did you know that Kirsten Stewart was gay before she came out? I’ve heard that lesbians were completely unsurprised!

I knew but don't know how or when.

Does anyone remember her as Annabelle in Freaky Friday? God I loved that film so much!

I don't remember when I found out but it's wasn't surprising or particularly interesting to me. But I agree completely about Freaky Friday. And her Annabelle is the only one that is the truest to the book one.

If anyone didn't know, before it was ever a movie, Freaky Friday was a novel written by Mary Rodgers. I highly recommend it.

I remember the 2013 speech and remember thinking 'oh, I thought everyone knew that.' That was about as much as it registered with me.

Riverlee · 21/01/2024 14:49

I did know this but only relatively recently (or maybe since the announcement at the awards ceremony above). She’s not made herself a gay rights campaigner etc, but as others have said, just quietly and privately got on with her life.

LauderSyme · 21/01/2024 14:51

Can we answer if we don't identify as entirely straight ? 😉

Dwrcegin · 21/01/2024 14:54

I thought everyone knew this for years. She's a fantastic actress too.

HideousKinky · 21/01/2024 14:55

yes I knew this

Tattletwat · 21/01/2024 14:56

I didn't know but by same token I don't care eithier she is a good actress.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 21/01/2024 14:57

Yes of course, since the 90s

I also knew this.

Like PP it was years ago. She’s a great actress - the film she did the rape seen was a really interesting film.

That film. I had such a hard time sitting through that scene, she played it so well I felt I was there it's seriously disturbing. Great actress.

SydneyCarton · 21/01/2024 14:58

@pickledandpuzzled Do you mean Candleshoe? She plays a character called Casey and it involves a stately home with a group of children living there

Aria2023 · 21/01/2024 14:58

I've known this for a while. Wasn't there some speculation about her being in a relationship with Mel Gibson? I feel it was around that time I read about her being gay.

Aria2023 · 21/01/2024 14:59

Also, side note. I'm watching True Detective and googled her age. I can't believe she's 61, she looks amazeballs.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/01/2024 15:01

Common knowledge since forever, as far as I was aware.

TheKeatingFive · 21/01/2024 15:02

Yup, I knew.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 21/01/2024 15:03

I've known for years, I think it was reported when she had her first child......that's when I realised anyways.

I didn’t know for sure, but there was definitely speculation/assumption about it among gay women before she came out, yeah. But that can also be the case for famous women who don’t later come out and who I personally think are pretty likely to be straight, e.g. the whole gaylor swift phenomenon

I found out officially about 5-7 years ago, but I kinda knew deep down some years ago. Can't articulate why. But I kinda just knew. I love the bones of her btw! Grin

fiftiesmum · 21/01/2024 15:05

I knew and not fussed - what actors/actresses do in RL is their own character is up to them
Although not keen on the pressure on celebs to pretend to be what they are not
We had enough problems years ago when gay people could be blackmailed, not allowed jobs and sidelined (ie Alan Turin)

SydneyCarton · 21/01/2024 14:43

@InstrumentsofTorture ”Don’t you get fresh with me, young man!” 🤣 Barbara Harris is also so much better than Jamie Lee Curtis at playing a teenager.

😂😂

Barbara Harris was fab! And so was the man who played the dad. I cannot tell you how many times I watched that film as a 13yr old - in fact, I'd like to watch it again right now!

icallitasplodge · 21/01/2024 15:06

I think there are some people you have known as long as you’ve known them. There is no need to say it or acknowledge it, it just is and makes no impact either way.

It shouldn’t matter but in Hollywood it does and the fact she has done so well in such a male dominated environment where “sexual availability” is so important, is testament to her talent and strength.
