Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy my son 11 one of these?

Lots of the kids in his class have them and he's asking me to get him one. His birthday is 9 months away and ive said if he still wants one he can wait until then. It seems like another fad and pointless.

I also feel a bit annoyed about all the parents that seem to give into this stuff and make it hard for the rest of us whose children feel like they're missing out.

SparePartz · 16/01/2024 21:14

I've also refused to buy DD(11) one!

anarchicparadise · 16/01/2024 21:15

my 9 and 5 year old ds have them and they definitely get used.

they both seem to like the pods and they drink a power of water

DGPP · 16/01/2024 21:16

I was the same but I gave in as all the kids had them. It’s still going strong two years later, it’s really sturdy. I’ve only bought one set of sniff rings in that time. I think it was worth it and made my kids really happy

purplecorkheart · 16/01/2024 21:16

I often wonder is it the actually parents who buy these items rather than Godparents/Aunts/Uncles/Friend's of parents tbh. I am a godmother to two preteens and they often ask me for must have items. I always check with their parents if it is ok or not but their Godfather just buys what they ask for.

Teasmaidavale · 16/01/2024 21:16

Don’t do it… they cost a small fortune and leak so.many.times!

DGPP · 16/01/2024 21:17

Ours has never leaked. You just have to make sure the seal is really pushed in

angelikacpickles · 16/01/2024 21:19

Ours have never leaked either.

YANBU to not buy it for him, but YABU to assume that other parents "give into this stuff". Kids may have bought them with their own money (as my DS did) or got them as birthday or Christmas presents (as my DD did).

Snowydaysfaraway · 16/01/2024 21:22

I bought dd one and the smell of the pod made her heave. 30 quid wasted..

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 16/01/2024 21:22

well they don't 'feel' like they're missing out, they ARE missing out, but they'll get over it. But why couldn't he have one for Christmas or his birthday??? I'm sure you spent more than that on him.

And it's not up to other parents to do your parenting for you.

you're not superior becsuse you don't buy the things your DS asks for & other people don't 'give in' because they do. They might get one yes, to 100 'nos' A drink bottle is hardly a bunch of tat or expensive pair of trainers. You do you & stop judging other parents for what they do.

LostMySocks · 16/01/2024 21:31

They have been super trendy at DSs' school for over a year. I refused to buy them as they are expensive. Both were given for birthday presents. They love them. Most of the kids have the 'cheap' plastic ones and discuss who has the same bottles.

We definitely don't change pods as often as recommended but the kids don't seem to notice.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 16/01/2024 21:37

Pointless fad but mine are thrilled with them.

has anyone who’s caved in tried the knock off pods from Amazon?

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 16/01/2024 21:37

Of all the water bottles we’ve bought over the years, Airups have way outlasted all of them and kids have drank the most water of their lives!

They get used every day, never been left/lost (the kids are precious about them as they knew they were expensive), never cracked or broken unlike all the normal water bottles which DS particularly can crack within a day. The new pods keep them “interesting” so they don’t seem to move onto the next thing like kids do with most fads.

I was against it too at first, because of the cost/fad but now we’ve got them I’m very happy with them.

dothehokeycokey · 16/01/2024 21:37

I got roped into this for dd 11 and wish I hadn't.

It's a glorified water bottle with an expensive smelling thing that goes on the top

It didn't help her to drink more water and I found it under her bed a while ago as hadn't seen it for a while.

AttentionToDetal · 16/01/2024 21:38

YANBU if you don't want to buy one.

YABU at being annoyed at the parents - you don't know the circumstances. My ds8 has one and it was a birthday gift from his grandparents.

HiGunny · 16/01/2024 21:39

I held out for almost a year and they were still asking for them. So in the end I paid for half and they paid the rest. They're good bottles but overpriced. My kids don't buy into too many fads so I didn't mind too much.

Zanatdy · 16/01/2024 21:39

Oh my god-daughter has one, cost nearly £50 for a bottle for water. Glad my teens not into fads

JustJoinedRightNow · 16/01/2024 21:39

If he doesn't care about brands get the imitation version off Amazon. It's half the price and is really good quality. My DS got one of those last year - he doesn't use it as often now so I'm glad I didn't spend the full amount for the authentic one.

User1786 · 16/01/2024 21:40

They are brilliant. I was sceptical and refused to by my daughter one. My mother ignored me and bought her one. It’s really well made, easy to clean and the pods last ages. More importantly she is happy and drinking more. I have mow bought myself one and the mojito pod is lovely!

User1786 · 16/01/2024 21:41

Oh and all the parts are replaceable individually which is great too.

Rainbow1612 · 16/01/2024 21:43

I finally relented and bought one for my son for Christmas after him asking for the last year.

I got it in the black Friday sale but it still cost an obscene amount for a water bottle imo, however to be fair he has used it every single day since and seems willing to drink a lot more water than he did previously.

sleepyscientist · 16/01/2024 21:48

DS had his for two weeks dropped it, cracked where it bends at the top. I'm currently refusing to buy another one

Unwisebutnotillegal · 16/01/2024 21:48

My dd loves hers and had previously refused to drink water at school as she hates the taste so came home grumpy and dehydrated. She now drinks the whole bottle and hasn’t had a UTI since.

Anxhor · 16/01/2024 21:56

Lots of people have this one from Amazon which works the same

Enicks86 · 16/01/2024 21:58

I have to admit when my daughter asked for one of these, I could believe the price for these bottles and the pods. However I've got to say that its brilliant, my daughter drinks loads more water now. The pods seem to last really well too. I could do with one myself!
