Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy my son 11 one of these?

Lots of the kids in his class have them and he's asking me to get him one. His birthday is 9 months away and ive said if he still wants one he can wait until then. It seems like another fad and pointless.

I also feel a bit annoyed about all the parents that seem to give into this stuff and make it hard for the rest of us whose children feel like they're missing out.

Good points - kids have drank so much more water, doesn’t leak and was never lost (because they knew they wouldn’t get another!) but….

Bad point - despite regular cleaning mould keeps appearing and so we have had to stop using!

if it wasn’t for the mould I think the kids would carry on using for a good while longer!

@Busybusybusy where are you finding the mould?

I think YABU saying this, what other parents choose to do is their choice, they can choose to buy whatever they want for their DC's.
Getting annoyed at other people's choices is pointless

ladyvimes · 17/01/2024 17:24

Mine have them. They bought them with birthday money. They’re good quality bottles to be fair.

thedementedelf · 17/01/2024 17:26

Ds12 and dd4 have them, so do I. They've been out for a couple of years but only recently getting very popular.

Dd and I have the plastic ones and ds has the metal one, I would get the metal one. The water is freezing all day. Ds would never drink water until he got that water bottle, the only scent he doesn't like is the watermelon one.

MadameCamembert · 17/01/2024 17:28

It may be a ‘fad’ but they’re going strong in thus house and we’ve never got through more water. I’m glad I gave in.

thedementedelf · 17/01/2024 17:29

"I also feel a bit annoyed about all the parents that seem to give into this stuff and make it hard for the rest of us whose children feel like they're missing out"

Then buy him one so he isn't left out?

bessytedsy · 17/01/2024 17:33

they are a rip off imo & I don’t understand the attraction in having the same as everyone else. I refused to be it but ds used birthday money, obviously hardly uses it 🙄

Dorriethelittlewitch · 17/01/2024 17:37

Dc1 (8) has one. He loves it. Drinks loads of water. No leaks or mould so far. Thinking about getting him a metal one as well.

Fionaville · 17/01/2024 17:46

YABU for being annoyed at other parents for buying them. My DD asked for one for her birthday. Should I have said "No, because not everyone has one?" It's a water bottle with a fascinating 'power' to kids. Of course they want one. If it is a fad, at least it's only cost £30 not £300 and some kids may have drunk more water than they otherwise might have done.

Summerdew · 17/01/2024 17:46

I said no for ages but then got a good deal on the metal ones (thank you Xmas bargains thread) at the back end of the summer. DD in Y6 loves it, uses every day. DD in Y7 finds it too heavy to lug to school with books so has given up. A mixed bag here, but I’d still buy again with hindsight.

Tagyoureit · 17/01/2024 17:47

Leaks more than pampers!!

I'm so annoyed at myself for paying 35 quid for 1 but my son loves it.

DecafOatMilkCappucino · 17/01/2024 17:52

What are the pods made of? Is it all sweetners and crap?

Carsarelife · 17/01/2024 17:59

@DecafOatMilkCappucino doesn't really matter as you aren't drinking them. You are only drinking plain water

Send it back, it shouldn't leak. None of ours have and other people have commented the same thing that theirs haven't either.

idontlikealdi · 17/01/2024 18:11

They're shit. Too big, leak and the pods taste vile. Gave in and got them for Dts when it was the height of the tik tok craze. They used them for a couple of weeks and ended up being recycled.

They now want Stanley's but they cannot for them!

VeryHungrySeaCucumber · 17/01/2024 18:12

IMO don't buy it now, don't buy it for his birthday, but don't make a fuss if he gets someone else to buy it for him for his birthday, and don't make a fuss if he gets it with his own pocket money.

There is no end to trying to help your child keep up with every friend, gimmick and trend, so the best way is not to start.

However, if the latter two scenarios, it requires ongoing purchases for the flavourings, then make it clear that is something he'd need to fund from his pocket money because you won't be.

itsallabitofamystery · 17/01/2024 18:14

We held out until Christmas, and only then did she get one (DD12) as her Nan's budget was £30 and we couldn't think of anything else.

Safe to say, DD loves it! It's incredibly sturdy and so far she still has the pods it came with came with. She now drinks a lot more water.

We did complain that it leaked on a few occasions, but we found out this was because she was using it with no pod (so just as a general water bottle. Customer services told us that the pod actually secures the lid in place, and without it the bottle doesn't close properly. This fixed the problem. If she just wants water she uses her Love Island bottle (yes, I did give in to that one 😂).

purpleme12 · 17/01/2024 18:17

Mine got one for Christmas.
Doing good so far.

DecafOatMilkCappucino · 17/01/2024 17:52

What are the pods made of? Is it all sweetners and crap?

This is a quote from their website "we snag the freshest ingredients from a top-tier scent maker, who skillfully extracts the goodness from their natural sources" a bit wanky but it sounds like the same process as perfume is made.
Surely it wouldn't need sweetners... you're not tasting it.

I wear perfume all the time without giving a second thought about the 'crap' that may be in it, maybe I should??

usernother · 17/01/2024 18:21

My grandchildren have them but they had to wait until birthdays. They wouldn't have got them immediately just because they wanted them.

judgedreadful · 17/01/2024 18:22

Honestly not worth the money.

As an aside, our school is FULL of 'judgey mc-judge face' eco parents that scoff at anything that doesn't meet their upper middle class test of ethical, moral and environmental standards. It must be exhausting for them to be weighing every damn thing up all the time.
But I have observed they're often the ones that go on holiday 3/4 times a year, but God forbid you buy a bloody Air Up bottle. (I'm not saying OP does all of those things, their post just reminded me of how the parents at DSs school speak).

yodog · 17/01/2024 18:32

mine got one each for Xmas and haven't being used. Straw seems too big for the bottle and leaks. waste of money

TedLasto · 17/01/2024 18:55

Mine got one for her birthday after about a 10 month wait from when she first asked. Maybe all the other parents who ‘gave in’ have done similar. That’s certainly how it seems to be at her school. It’s used every day, doesn’t leak. So I’m happy enough with it. She got some pods for Xmas but other than that haven’t bought any new ones since it arrived.

Busybusybusy · 17/01/2024 21:57

where to straw inserts into the lid inside the bottle. Such a shame as no other complaints!
