Am I being unreasonable to refuse to buy my son 11 one of these?

Lots of the kids in his class have them and he's asking me to get him one. His birthday is 9 months away and ive said if he still wants one he can wait until then. It seems like another fad and pointless.

I also feel a bit annoyed about all the parents that seem to give into this stuff and make it hard for the rest of us whose children feel like they're missing out.

Yanbu to not buy one if you don’t want to.

Yabu to blame other parents; you should be able to stand up for your own decisions, what others do is their business.

My DC love theirs, they have never leaked either.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 16/01/2024 22:00

My kids break every water bottle I’ve ever got them. There’s no way in hell I’d buy them one of these and Ive said so countless times.

Cosycover · 16/01/2024 22:00

Complete waste of money. The water just tastes like water. Literally no other taste at all despite trying many pods.

OrlandointheWilderness · 16/01/2024 22:02

My DD got one Christmas 2022. It has to be the best value Christmas present she's ever had, it's used daily! I was sceptical but it's really good.

Carsarelife · 16/01/2024 22:03

I'd buy it for him. Does he get pocket money so he could save for it?
I bought one Xmas 2022 and it's been used daily for more than a year.
I can recommend it

Carsarelife · 16/01/2024 22:04

Oh and just wanted to add I bought the metal one, as I thought one drop and it's gone

thatneverhappened · 16/01/2024 22:05

They're a fad. DD12 got one 8 months ago and lost interest so quick

We have had ours for 18 months and still in perfect condition and regularly used. They don’t use them for school though only home. I’m thinking of getting g one for myself.

Frogfleet · 16/01/2024 22:06

Well, I refused to buy my 10 year old one for Christmas, but I didn't feel I could stop her from buying one with her own Christmas money last week. I told her it was likely a waste of money, but it was her money and that's what she wanted.

It arrived and within a few minutes she was bitterly disappointed that it didn't really taste like cherry cola or whatever it was supposed to be! She keeps asking me why it doesn't seem to work.

Please tell your ten year old from mine - don't do it. It's a mistake!

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 16/01/2024 22:08

DD (7) got one for her birthday. She’d wanted one since September. I wasn’t going to spunk £40 on a fancy bottle on a whim but was happy to get it for a birthday. I don’t see it as any different to all the crap fads I was into at that age and it makes her happy.

PotentialQuitter · 16/01/2024 22:11

I was reluctant to buy one but my son's has lasted a very long time and he gets new pods occasionally. He was always breaking bottles before and we were always replacing them so has probably saved us money in the long term.

TigerOnTour · 16/01/2024 22:11

My friend thinks they're a gateway drug to vaping...

Nineteendays · 16/01/2024 22:17

My daughter got one for Christmas- it was top of her list from Santa. I figured I’d use it if she didn’t. She’s 8 and has used it a bit but I think she was expecting the scent to make more of a difference than it does.

it’s weird you’re annoyed with parents for buying their children presents

CaramelMac · 16/01/2024 22:19

Were you never a teen who wanted to fit in?

Christmasnutcracker · 16/01/2024 22:22

YABU for judging other parents.

stargirl1701 · 16/01/2024 22:24

I told my DC they were welcome to buy one from their own money. They both decided Air Ups weren't worth the money.

Shocker! 🙄

Ingibjörg · 16/01/2024 22:25

The fad is over at our school. No one uses them anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SweetPeaPods · 16/01/2024 22:28

Dc 10 and 9 have wanted one for ages. They have to wait for birthdays or Christmas for things like that. They have both used it every day since and have never leaked.

LexRider · 16/01/2024 22:36

I hate them so I say YANBU if he’s year six, tell him it’s a waste of money, BUT if he’s year 7 and trying to fit in at his new school then I’d buy him one straight away, year 7 is a very hard time to feel left out.

Topee · 16/01/2024 22:44

So you want other parents not to buy them because you don’t want to buy one for your child? Where does that stop then, branded trainers, tech?

My children have them, I think they’re a con but they love them!

2under4 · 16/01/2024 22:53

I mean... if the latest fad gets children to hydrate more, it could be worse. They could be asking for slime that gets mashed into everything, or violent video games (gasp!) or do you remember the fad for candyfloss machines in the 90s?

Snugglemonkey · 16/01/2024 22:53

My son (7) bought himself one with his birthday money. He asked santa for more pods and got them in his stocking. He has used it every day for over a year and has never had so much water. Before he got it, he had cracked lips often and would not drink any water at all, so I am happy he got it. He has the metal one and it is very sturdy. Thankfully!

Busybusybusy · 16/01/2024 22:58

Good points - kids have drank so much more water, doesn’t leak and was never lost (because they knew they wouldn’t get another!) but….

Bad point - despite regular cleaning mould keeps appearing and so we have had to stop using!

if it wasn’t for the mould I think the kids would carry on using for a good while longer!

CatsTheWayToDoIt · 16/01/2024 23:06

I’ve clicked you are being unreasonable simply because of the part where you blame other parents. My son wanted one when they first became massive, about 18 months ago, and he got one last June for his birthday. As birthday presents go it was really reasonable, about £40 with all the pods I got him. Way less than a switch or a new bike, which he’s asked for in previous years. I think yanbu at all to make your kids wait though - I did and it make him all the happier when he got it, he was delighted.
