Stanley cups with straws are for people who don’t walk very far

Hear me out.

Hikers, walkers, active people, have been using thermos or Stanley for years to keep drinks HOT while they are out and have managed to keep quiet about it.

Now generic tiktok person has introduced other generic tiktok person to insulated cups and suddenly it’s an internet sensation.

I put it to you that if anyone was a fairly active person to start with, they’d already own a Stanley or Thermos to start with for those long journeys. And this wouldn’t be a must buy, as you’d already have it. These are mostly for people who sit down, don’t move to refresh their water, and want their drink to stay cool for several hours at their side.

Yes of course. But they’re a trend, it’s not really about practicality. Just like lots of people who buy north face don’t do anything outdoorsy. I don’t think it’s a gotcha to point out that people are jumping on a bandwagon. It’ll be something else soon.

Cold drinks. The straw one is not really for hot drinks, it’s impractical mostly. Which doesn’t matter if you are just sitting down.

Mountaineer here. I don't think those insulated cups are good for long walks. They don't hold enough liquid, they aren't as well insulated as a proper flask but weightier than a refillable bottle when every gram counts, and they often leak when you tip them, even the Thermos brand ones do that! I always thought insulated cups were for car drivers on their way to work and flasks or water bottles (or camelpaks) were for proper outdoors enthusiasts.

So I think you're right but not for the reasons you've stated.

Or the classic camping stove and enamel cup for a brew, depending on the length of the hike/climb. 😅

Ah ok X post with the clarification update. So they've made a crapper product that looks like something you'd take on a walk but is even less up to the job than the (fairly poor) original??? Yikes!

They aren't for walking, they're for keeping your water cold at your desk or in your car. They're a fad for sure, but I don't see what walking has to do with anything.

I was lifting my colleague’s in amazement today. A small older lady could use them for weights.

If you're not using a water bladder for hikes then at the very least you want a water bottle you can chuck in your bag and won't make everything wet. That would be a basic expectation for me.

Meh. It's probably the only thing that they have kept quiet about. Everyone I know who describes themselves as a walker/hiker/runner/cyclist/paddle boarder or whatever is forever bleating on about the latest essential bit of kit.
Some of the people I see swimming spend more time showing off and faffing about with their collection of 'essentials' than they do actually using it, and of course they all wear their dry robes in M&S so everyone knows they are not just swimmers, they're wild swimmers.

You can remove the straw and use as a normal cup - the tip rotates to seal or drink via a mouth hole

If that's what people want to drink out of then let them. I have seen so many people online slate people who choose these cups, just comes across like they're really really trying hard to price how superior they are.

it’s just to avoid getting up and refilling your cup when it gets warm ie not even walking to the sink!

i don’t think anyone has claimed they are for hiking OP?! 😂 what a ridiculous comment. the brand may have other types of insulated cups / flasks that are for hiking, but i’m pretty sure no-one has ever said that the ones with a straw would be ideal for this.

i have the one with the straw, and i’m not even on tiktok 🤯 but it holds enough liquid that i can keep track easily of how much i’m drinking in a day without having to fill it up all the time. it keeps iced drinks cold for about 24 hours, and i can make hot squash to take with me for in the car after i’ve taken the dogs out or been with the horses. and i went for stanley over any other brand because of the lifetime guarantee. if you want to assume that everyone who has one is inactive and just can’t be bothered to refill their bottles because they’re sat on their arses all day then crack on.

I reckon they’d be ideal to stick beer in by the pool on holiday 😁

I buy those bottles of Jimmy's coffee for my walks, they keep cold for quite a while, I don't really like drinks out of a flask or insulated cup

I've just see a video where a woman opens a tub of Ben and Jerry's ice cream and without the lid the tub fits into her Stanley cup and she gets a spoon and starts eating it straight from the tub and holding the handle of the Stanley cup ! 😩😂

They are essential for the #dryrobewankers.

We have a Stanley cocktail shaker and some small insulated cups, cos we can't hike 18miles without a proper Martini.

Bought DH an insulated mug from Makita, the power tool people.
It's belt loop is a wonder, has a purposeful loop to carry your carpenters pencil or favourite screwdriver.
