Stanley cups with straws are for people who don’t walk very far

Hear me out.

Hikers, walkers, active people, have been using thermos or Stanley for years to keep drinks HOT while they are out and have managed to keep quiet about it.

Now generic tiktok person has introduced other generic tiktok person to insulated cups and suddenly it’s an internet sensation.

I put it to you that if anyone was a fairly active person to start with, they’d already own a Stanley or Thermos to start with for those long journeys. And this wouldn’t be a must buy, as you’d already have it. These are mostly for people who sit down, don’t move to refresh their water, and want their drink to stay cool for several hours at their side.

The guy who reinvigorated the brand Crocs, and drove the craze of people racing to collect the new limited editons, then posting all about them on social media, and feeling they were in some sort of special tribe in doing so, is now the CEO at... Stanley.

It's nothing at all to do with walkers any more. It's just trend led and tribal.
It'll pass soon and all those cups will eventually make their way to land fill.

Finally a CEO who actually knows what they're doing

ExtremelyJoyous · 11/01/2024 21:44

They are definitely not designed for walking.. I don’t think anyone is pretending they are though?!

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 21:46

They look a bit of an encumbrance

Wonder if he wants to run the post office?

Magenta65 · 11/01/2024 21:48

Well they aren’t being sold as a hiking cup. They’re being advertised for the average person to use in the office, in the car, at home. Nothing to do with being lazy, it’s a large cup therefore you won’t fill it up a lot but they do make you drink more. I have one, it’s fab for keeping water/squash cold for hours on end. Great for me as I hate warm drinks

hogangogs · 11/01/2024 21:16

i don’t think anyone has claimed they are for hiking OP?! 😂 what a ridiculous comment. the brand may have other types of insulated cups / flasks that are for hiking, but i’m pretty sure no-one has ever said that the ones with a straw would be ideal for this.

i have the one with the straw, and i’m not even on tiktok 🤯 but it holds enough liquid that i can keep track easily of how much i’m drinking in a day without having to fill it up all the time. it keeps iced drinks cold for about 24 hours, and i can make hot squash to take with me for in the car after i’ve taken the dogs out or been with the horses. and i went for stanley over any other brand because of the lifetime guarantee. if you want to assume that everyone who has one is inactive and just can’t be bothered to refill their bottles because they’re sat on their arses all day then crack on.

Without having to fill it up all the time.

ie I don’t want to get up

Mountaineer here. I don't think those insulated cups are good for long walks. They don't hold enough liquid, they aren't as well insulated as a proper flask but weightier than a refillable bottle when every gram counts, and they often leak when you tip them, even the Thermos brand ones do that! I always thought insulated cups were for car drivers on their way to work and flasks or water bottles (or camelpaks) were for proper outdoors enthusiasts.

So I think you're right but not for the reasons you've stated.

Or the classic camping stove and enamel cup for a brew, depending on the length of the hike/climb. 😅

Agree, a proper walker would use a Nalgene bottle or Camelbak, surely? Of at least something like a flask you can chuck in your backpack. Not something you hold in your hand.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2024 21:53

nalgene pah. A proper hiker uses reuses a few smart water bottles. Cheap, incredibly light and stash easily.

steff13 · 11/01/2024 21:53

They're not meant for hiking. I keep mine at my desk because I work 10 hours a day, and it's easier to fill that cup twice then get up a zillion times to fill a smaller cup. And let me assure you that I drink two full Stanley cups of water a day and I get up plenty and walk around to go to the bathroom.

Saschka · 11/01/2024 21:55

We have a Stanley cocktail shaker and some small insulated cups, cos we can't hike 18miles without a proper Martini

I really hope this is true! I would love to come across somebody making a mid-hike martini halfway up Firle Beacon or somewhere. Sadly I just see people walking their dogs.

Ilovesandwiches · 11/01/2024 21:57

I take my Stanley to the gym and pt sessions :)

BobnLen · 11/01/2024 21:59

When DH goes on his 30 mile hikes he uses lucazade sport and a camelbak. He uses a large Stanley flask for fishing, he wouldn't use one of those cups for anything

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 11/01/2024 22:04

Well exactly, they aren’t buying them for insulation or practicality at all.

it’s just to avoid getting up and refilling your cup when it gets warm ie not even walking to the sink!

So they are buying them for insulation and practicality then!

TheFairyCaravan · 11/01/2024 22:06

I’ve got one, it holds 2 pints of water which is brilliant for me because I’m disabled and can’t walk unaied. It means I don’t need to keep going back and forth to the kitchen to get drinks.

I bought DS1 one for Christmas. He really likes it. He takes it to the gym, it’s in his car and he takes it to work (he’s in the army) so he’s always got access to fluids.

I’ve got a large stainless steel cup that looks a bit like a McDonalds cup, too, that I’ve had for a couple of years. Since I’ve had these cups I’ve found I drink more water because it stays cold. I can’t stand warm water.

Fizbosshoes · 11/01/2024 22:07

I thought they were just to stop single use plastic?
DD has had a chilly bottle for about 5 years and recently bought an insulated cup/flask thingy for hot drinks - it was fairly cheap. She uses it in the house, school and takes it shopping sometimes

Vacant12 · 11/01/2024 22:10

I just googled them...they actually look pretty good but the price! £44.99 for a cup??!

That doesn't mean people are being lazy. Not everyone can nip and refill a drink say if they're working
I have a litre bottle on my desk as my throat gets so sore/dry but I can't just get up when I can. A lot of nurses seem to use them as well which makes sense as it keeps the drink cold and means they don't have to keep filling it up

wonderinglywondering · 11/01/2024 22:12

I was sadly influenced in the first few days of DC3's life, i
bought one during the 3am feed! BF makes me so thirsty so I keep it by my bed, keeps water cold all night!

There was a woman who had one in her car with ice in it and the car caught fire and the entire thing burned. When she got into the car the cup was intact with the ice still in it. Stanley bought her a new car.

God, imagine, people who sit down !

I’d love to hear your views on remote controls OP.

@Saschka see you on the south west coastal path. Forget Raynor Winn's miserable saltpath, join mine, where the salt is on the air and the rim of the glass

Vacant12 · 11/01/2024 22:24

Just to add - I am actually very active and not at all lazy, I just don't drink anywhere near enough water. Having a large ice cold drink sitting around that I can just grab might actually help me...I'm not sure why you jumped to the conclusion they are for lazy people. I'm still not spending £45 on a cup though.

People who sit don't deserve water. Only people who go on hikes

did you not read about the dogs and the horses? would you like me to take a smaller cup out with me and refill it from the automatic drinker in the field? or maybe from a stream? i think i’ll just stick to my handy massive stanley that sits nicely in my car and not worry about where i can fill it up from when i’m out and about getting in my 20k steps a day.

i think this thread didn’t go how you thought it would, did it?!
