Stanley cups with straws are for people who don’t walk very far

Hear me out.

Hikers, walkers, active people, have been using thermos or Stanley for years to keep drinks HOT while they are out and have managed to keep quiet about it.

Now generic tiktok person has introduced other generic tiktok person to insulated cups and suddenly it’s an internet sensation.

I put it to you that if anyone was a fairly active person to start with, they’d already own a Stanley or Thermos to start with for those long journeys. And this wouldn’t be a must buy, as you’d already have it. These are mostly for people who sit down, don’t move to refresh their water, and want their drink to stay cool for several hours at their side.

I go on hikes but some days I watch telly all day, I don't think one of those cups would be very good as sometimes it's good to get up

You think a thermos is some kind of well-kept walkers-only secret?!

Next thing you know more people will be jumping on the bandwagon wearing “boots” and carrying “lunchboxes”.

The cups were designed for truckers but clearly struck a chord with mums ferrying tiny dictators. They fit in a car cup holder. Fit enough liquid of whatever drink you order to not only satisfy your own thirst but that of a tiny dictator who has decided their drink is bad and they want mums drink because it’s better. You can make the tiny dictator carry it, effectively acting like an anchor to slow down its slippery nature of escaping through baby gates.

As a birdwatcher in teens and early 20s I had a small lightweight thermos flask that did about 4 tiny cupfuls and kept hot and spillproof. However, on walking holidays, I’ve always favoured having a medium sized water bottle and not bothering with hot drinks. You have to take water, but a flask of tea/coffee as well is just more weight.

For work, I have a Contigo spill proof to take me through the morning when I feel like taking a hot drink. I first discovered that brand in 2016.

PickAChew · 11/01/2024 22:48

They're obviously aimed at people commuting. A much bigger market than people fell walking.

QuestionableMouse · 11/01/2024 22:48

I have two and use them for both hot and cold drinks! They're not Stanley branded but keep hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold. They also go everywhere with me - saves buying drinks while I'm out.

Without having to fill it up all the time.

ie I don’t want to get up

Honestly what's your problem with them? Mine comes to work with me where I can be miles from a tap!

Well exactly, they aren’t buying them for insulation or practicality at all.

it’s just to avoid getting up and refilling your cup when it gets warm ie not even walking to the sink!

Ok...so what is your point?

So what?? I'm not sure what point you think you are making.

Why do you care if someone drinks water from a huge insulated cup or fills a smaller glass several times?

Mudflaps · 12/01/2024 00:10

Love Mammy Banter's take on them. I've a Yeti that I bought online about 7 years ago, didn't check the size out correctly and it's like a little bucket, way too big but I did test it with cold water and ice, it stayed cold for two days which shocked me, still too big so now it occasionally gets used as a vase!!!

Omg I missed that bit of the post 🤣🤣 that’s too funny!

OP I hate to tell you this, but my family actually have several thermos flasks and we are NOT the active outdoorsy type!!

araiwa · 12/01/2024 08:41

No idea because I don't follow ice hockey

Glittertwins · 12/01/2024 08:45

No good to me if they leak!!

idontlikealdi · 12/01/2024 09:03

They're for cars not hiking.

Sequinppigeon · 12/01/2024 09:08

Do you feel better about yourself now op? Of course you wouldn't take a cup like that on a walk, equally I probably wouldn't use a flask at my desk different cups are needed in different situations. Owning either model or type of cup doesn't mean you don't do the other activity.

It feels like quite an unpleasant and judgmental post tbh. Especially juat about a cup.

ManateeFair · 12/01/2024 09:10

I’m amazed that anyone could get so territorial about a fucking flask

What’s that got to do with you, though?

Waitingfortulips · 12/01/2024 09:16

I am a walker and the owner of a Stanley cup and agree. The cup is too heavy for long walks.

It is however, fantastic to keep on my desk and I drink much more water on a working day, which in turn means I feel better when I walk.

RandomButtons · 12/01/2024 09:17

YABU.

They were designed for American builders and hairy workmen working in hot building sites. Big cups perfect for keeping drinks cold on scorching days, designed to fit in the cup holder of your dump truck.

An influencer then realised that they were perfect for girls who wanted to keep thier drinks cool.

Stanley cottoned onto the trend, released pastel range, and thier turnover went from $50 million a year to $350 million a year. All because they didn’t ignore or condescend the new market.

They were never aimed at hikers. If youngsters enjoy keeping their drinks cool in them, rock on.

mrsbyers · 13/01/2024 18:57

I’ve just ordered a little sling thing for mine as my car cup holder is too small

As someone who has to drink at least 3 litres a day the cup is really ‘handy’ more so than the large 1L chilly bottle I had been using as no need to keep unscrewing lid

Meowandthen · 13/01/2024 19:03

It’s a fad, the latest must-have brand for certain people.

Who bloody cares? 🤷🏻‍♀️
