To make you aware that everyone can still see your edited posts?

I have seen a few people replace something they wrote with a . Or with something completely contradictory to what they have posted.

I think some people may not be aware that if you click on the word edited under your edited post it shows the previous post.

You still need to be careful with what you are posting as it can expose what you really thought and then redacted.

Yes, I only found this out after someone asked me why I’d removed a word from my post. I was wondering how the hell they knew 🤣

It’s ok, I usually only really correct typos.

Teasie123 · 11/01/2024 00:10

Question... when I want to write something on a thread, do I have to click reply every time??

Grimchmas · 11/01/2024 00:12

I didn't know that, good tip for seeing what other people have edited!

They'll be disappointed to check mine though.

Sumsummer · 11/01/2024 00:13

Click add post at the bottom bar.

No, you can just scroll to the bottom of the thread and add your post.

Teasie123 · 11/01/2024 00:17

Ok. Is this it?

Teasie123 · 11/01/2024 00:18

And if I want to answer someone specifically, then I click reply?

Sumsummer · 11/01/2024 00:19

Three dots...
Then quote.
I have found reply to be useless.

Ooh, I did not know that. I went back and had a look at some edited posts, now my curiosity had been satisfied....lol

Sumsummer · 11/01/2024 00:20

Now I always check to see what people have hidden.

....like this?

No, oddly "reply" doesn't really do anything different to "new post".

I replied directly to you here by quoting you.

Click the 3 dots on the top right of the post you want to reply to, then click."quote" and it'll appear at the top of your post like on this one.

TheBeesKnee · 11/01/2024 00:22

YABU, I like reading them. A few funny flounces. If people know they might stop 🤣

Enjoy seeing the 93 typos and autocorrects I have to correct in most of my posts.

falalalalalalalallama · 11/01/2024 00:23

Ah, I was beaten to it! 😭🤣

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 11/01/2024 00:23

I didn’t know that. Fortunately the only time I’ve ever edited something was when I meant to quote someone but clicked on reply instead so it put it in the wrong place and it wasn’t clear who I was answering.

Last question, so on my threads, when someone posts, are they they talking to me or everyone on my thread? Sorry, not long on Mumsnet and people are commenting that I'm not answering right.🤭🤭🤭

theconfidenceofwho · 11/01/2024 00:39

Didn't know this about the edit function Op - love it! Thanks for sharing!

Aquamarine1029 · 11/01/2024 00:42

Meh. Couldn't care less. I only ever edit a minor typo.

LauderSyme · 11/01/2024 00:52

Ooh I didn't know this, thanks OP! I was wondering why I was seeing edited posts with just a full stop.

Now I'm going to look for the inflammatory edits you mentioned 😉

TempleOfBloom · 11/01/2024 00:53

@MNHQ Is this your intention? People could be trying to edit out real names or identifying info. This isn’t right, surely?

This is why it's a good feature - those of us who just want to edit to correct typos can do it happily, those who want to use the edit feature in more devious or manipulative ways or to cover up their own bad behaviour are screwed because there's a clear record of what they said before.

MadamVastra · 11/01/2024 01:17

I knew this because on iPhone now you can also edit iMessages and when you click on it you can see the unedited message

Everything you write is visible to all, it’s not personal to you. What have people been saying that you have been doing wrong?

LittleGreenDragons · 11/01/2024 01:23

If it's changing can't to can which also changes the meaning then I assume it's a typo or autocorrect error.

However if the whole post has been changed after others have responded to the original edit then you can report it to MN. There's a special drop down for it as inappropriate edit.
