To make you aware that everyone can still see your edited posts?

I have seen a few people replace something they wrote with a . Or with something completely contradictory to what they have posted.

I think some people may not be aware that if you click on the word edited under your edited post it shows the previous post.

You still need to be careful with what you are posting as it can expose what you really thought and then redacted.

Everything you write is visible to all, it’s not personal to you. What have people been saying that you have been doing wrong?

If you start a thread then assume all posts are responding to you, unless they have quoted a post or tagged a user name.

They are probably saying it's difficult to follow your posts if you don't quote or tag the person you are answering.

LittleGreenDragons · 11/01/2024 01:26

Apologies @Theatrefan12 , I meant to quote @Teasie123 Blush

Pudmyboy · 11/01/2024 01:28

Thanks @Sumsummer I did not know this!
Usually typos, but I do wonder what the point of the edit is if the original can be seen: is it like maths exams where you have to show your working -out?

TempleOfBloom · 11/01/2024 00:53

@MNHQ Is this your intention? People could be trying to edit out real names or identifying info. This isn’t right, surely?

You need to report your post if you want to do that.

You should be able to see people's original post so they can't pretend they didn't write what they did.

This is why it's a good feature - those of us who just want to edit to correct typos can do it happily, those who want to use the edit feature in more devious or manipulative ways or to cover up their own bad behaviour are screwed because there's a clear record of what they said before.

And it's an abuse of the function to substantially alter what you originally said.

SequentialAnalyst · 11/01/2024 01:49

I edit loads of my posts! Nearly always there are typos, often a better phrase occurs to me between posting and my post appearing on the thread, so I edit it. Sometimes this occurs at the end of the 5 min grace period. But I have nothing to hide...

Teasie123 · 11/01/2024 03:13

Just that I should be clicking reply on all my posts causey threads were not making sense?

If that’s what they want to do then they should report their post. MNHQ respond pretty quickly. I’ve seen a lot of sock puppeting and the posts have always ended up being deleted. It’s nice to see who the trolls are.

YABU for starting this thread OP! How people have never clicked on the ‘edited’ button is beyond me

What people probably meant is that it wasn’t clear who you’re speaking too.

The reply button in crap. It doesn’t work and doesn’t make sense. If you click reply on someone’s post, all it does is add your comment on the thread. It doesn’t show what post you were responding too.

If you want to respond to someone, quote them like posters on this thread have shown you. You can also @ them by pressing the @ button and selecting their name like this @Teasie123 . Then it’s clear who you’re responding too

Teasie123 · 11/01/2024 03:57

@RedMinnie omg! Thank you so much. Got it now.😁😁😁

HoppingPavlova · 11/01/2024 03:58

How do even use the edit function? I’d like to for the majority of my posts as my phone puts in stupid predictive text/autocorrect that even changes it after typing and being checked but seems to sneak it in when I press post/submit. It means there are sentences that just don’t make sense, or worse still it ‘corrects’ grammar and spelling from right to wrong. I’ve gone back to my own previous posts and can’t find a function to edit them? I only have access to Mumsnet via an iPhone if this makes any difference?

It doesn't matter if you click reply under the post of the person you wanted to respond directly to, or you click it elsewhere (at the end of the thread), it will still appear at the end of the thread. Posts appear in chronological order, not under the comment they're replying to.

As PP said, if you want to reply directly to someone so they see it, then either click the three dots top right, opposite their name, or use the @ symbol which brings up a drop down list of posters within the thread and you can tag them (they will be notified they've been tagged).

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/01/2024 04:00

@HoppingPavlova There is only a short time frame in which you can edit your own posts (no idea how long it is), probably just a few minutes. It is so you can spot a typo or realise you've left out relevant info immediately after posting, but not so that people can backtrack and completely change what they said.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/01/2024 04:17

When MN brought in the feature they were clear about this - that's a key part of being able to edit, that your original post can be seen, for transparency.

You can see MN's posts on this in Site Stuff.

DramaAlpaca · 11/01/2024 04:23

I was just about to post exactly what @EarringsandLipstick said.

MNHQ were perfectly up front about how the edit function works.

BayCityCoaster · 11/01/2024 04:31

Aquamarine1029 · 11/01/2024 00:42

Meh. Couldn't care less. I only ever edit a minor typo.

It’s not about what you use the edit function for. It’s what other people do with it.

Like you, I just use it to edit typos.

But it’s useful to see what people who decide to withdraw their post and replace it with just a ‘.’ had said, for example.

You just click on the ‘edited’ button and you can see what they had said previously.

People are only notified when they’re tagged if they have that function turned on.

I don’t, so people can @ me all they like, I’m none the wiser!

I also use an email address that I created specifically for MN due to hacking concerns from previous years, and I rarely check it, anyway.

Not having read the threads in site stuff I had no idea about this.

As it happens I have only ever used the function to correct typos, but if MN intended the edit history to be accessible it should say that in the edit box. So that people who use it to edit out personal details are aware that they haven’t really edited it out at all.

EarringsandLipstick · 11/01/2024 05:03

@TempleOfBloom

To be fair to MN, they created several threads and replied to others, when they introduced the function. They were in Active at the time.

I am surprised that people aren't aware very quickly - what did posters who weren't aware think the purpose of having a clickable Edited button was?

splatmouse · 11/01/2024 07:24

.

Grimchmas · 11/01/2024 07:35

There's a message that comes up when you go to edit:

Edit your message here. Noticed a typo? You can change it here. Changing the context of posts is against Talk guidelines, find out more here.

If somebody uses it nefariously you can report and get it deleted, much the same as any other post that is against T&Cs..

(Edited to see the message so I could quote it word for word 😉 )

The . posts intrigue me and there's been occasions where and OP has posted and edited with lots of information different which changed the advice.

Otherwise I tend to assume like a PP said that it's either typos, autocorrect changes or they've rephrased something but aren't sock puppetting.

I'd not look unless the rest of the replies made no sense in the context of the edited post.
