I have seen a few people replace something they wrote with a . Or with something completely contradictory to what they have posted.

I think some people may not be aware that if you click on the word edited under your edited post it shows the previous post.

You still need to be careful with what you are posting as it can expose what you really thought and then redacted.

OP posts:

When MN brought in the feature they were clear about this - that's a key part of being able to edit, that your original post can be seen, for transparency.

You can see MN's posts on this in Site Stuff.

Exactly this. And unless something has changed there is only a small window of time to edit the post. 20 mins or so it used to be, the point is to edit out typos or fix something that doesn’t make sense.

1975wasthebest · 11/01/2024 08:10

Yes I know, and it’s a bloody stupid feature that lets other people see the record of what we’ve edited, which in my experience of using online forums is pretty unusual. It’s like they’re letting us edit our posts, but on the other hand they’re not.

Question... when I want to write something on a thread, do I have to click reply every time??

No.
The Reply button doesn't work.
There are many threads on Site Stuff on the subject.

You need to click on the three dots and select QUOTE.

That's exactly the point though. You can edit for clarity or a typo but it stops anyone abusing it by substantially changing what they wrote and then denying it. That would lead to even more nonsensical threads.

I was against an edit function coming in at all but the short window and the record of what was edited so people can't change their position and hide that are what makes it a feature that does actually enhance the forum.

Just that I should be clicking reply on all my posts causey threads were not making sense?

No, Reply on here doesn't work. It's a useless button.

See my post above about it.

You have to click on the three dots and select QUOTE.

It's the same with the Times and Facebook.

I usually use it to correct typos but did once use it to delete a post and said "edited because I had misread the op" when I posted something and then realised I had the wrong end of the stick. OK people might have gone and read what I said originally, but if they wanted to waste their time...

saraclara · 11/01/2024 09:07

We fought for ages for an edit feature. MNHQ were reluctant because people could use it to change what they'd written after responses had been made.

The system they came up with was very well explained and entirely transparent. Those of us who notice an egregious typo or autocorrect the moment they press send, have a few minutes to correct it. But any deceitful changes cannot be hidden.

I've never once clicked to see what an edited post was like originally. I don't care, and assume that there's been a typo correction.

Brefugee · 11/01/2024 09:13

Some forums use the edit function to hide spoilers for books/films/TV shows etc. But usually they leave a comment to that effect. So if you click to see the original post you can read them, but if you don't want to be spoiled you don't look

It's to stop posters completely changing what they say for nefarious purposes and it is a good thing.

No, it isn't. At least not with The Times.

Ah, the Times tells you it has been edited, but you can't see what the original post was. I thought you could actually click through!

RadiatorHead · 11/01/2024 10:04

Ooh that’s interesting! Fortunately, I’ve been using it in the intended way and only correcting spelling mistakes/adding or removing words to make a sentence flow better. #phew!

Sorry not a typo - it's a bit of an In-joke from another site 😁

No worries. It is a bit niche

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 11/01/2024 13:39

I've only seen people change it to a . when they've posted something then realised it's irrelevant because they either got the wrong end of the stick, or they asked for info that was already in the OP.

Teasie123 · 14/01/2024 05:58

Have a question....if I just want to say good post or I agree which do I click. The save or thanks icon? Thanks isn't always what I mean and saving it when I just want to say good post seems too much
🤔🤔😀

GanninHyem · 14/01/2024 07:18

I report them for misuse of the edit button. Petty but the less people on this site who break the rules the better. If only they would do something about the serial troll hunters.

There isn't an option for that. Saving it just means you can find it again. Thanks sort of means you agree and are thanking the poster for their opinion. But only the poster can see it.

There's no equivalent of a public thumbs up reaction.
