I found the thread on here about the places people have found unsafe very interesting.
Where are the places you’ve visited/lived that have felt the safest?
I live in Portugal at the moment and feel v safe in most areas. I also felt safe staying in New South Wales in Australia and Cornwall and Abersoch

I went on holiday to a town in Dorset (can't remember which one, maybe Crewkerne?) and they had local newspaper boards everywhere with the headline "WINDSCREEN WIPER BROKEN BY VANDALS" and I have to say I felt pretty safe there 😁

Horriblewoman · 10/01/2024 14:12

I spend a lot of time in rural southern Sweden and feel incredibly safe.

Copenhagen too always feels safe when I’m pottering around there.

HoHoHoliday · 10/01/2024 14:14

As a female traveller, usually travelling solo (but not always) the only two places I felt unsafe based on actually experiencing threats to my safety were Morocco and India.

The places I've felt truly safe were all of the Nordic countries - Iceland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland.

Very hard metric to measure. Your safe is not the same as everybody else's. I always felt perfectly safe in the decades that I lived in London, but not every does.

I used to live in Munich - a city of 4 million, which was like Toytown.

SallyWD · 10/01/2024 14:17

Lived in Switzerland for a few months. Felt soooo safe! Compared to the UK everyone looked very respectable and smart. Never a hint of any antisocial behaviour.
I agree that Portugal feels safe (have spent months there too).
Where I live in Leeds feels safe and places nearby like Harrogate, Ilkley etc.

mynameiscalypso · 10/01/2024 14:18

I live in London and feel much safer here than most other places - we go to rural France every year and I never feel entirely safe there. I think there's a lot to be said for familiarity breeding a feeling of safety though.

mondaytosunday · 10/01/2024 14:19

This may surprise you but I feel safe where I live in SW London. I'm not a fool - I'm not walking around at midnight with headphones on and a wallet of cash! But it's a relatively lively area and if my 18 year old DD was going out locally for the night I'd feel totally fine about it.
The safest in reality is a family house I have in Spain. But I don't feel particularly safe there because it's so isolated. I feel I could be chopped into tiny pieces by a serial killer or killed by a marauding wild boar and no one would hear my screams or discover me for weeks. But statistically it's probably the safest place!

snowitall · 10/01/2024 14:22

Feel safest living in London! I love how late at night people are out and about for good reason so it’s not just dodgy people at night like you get in some quieter areas of the world. I would feel safer walking around at 1am in central london than I would in the cotswolds, for example.

CouCouCachou · 10/01/2024 14:26

have felt totally safe in every part of Scotland I’ve lived in.

whirlyhead · 10/01/2024 14:27

Strangely enough - Havana in Cuba. I have no idea why I felt so happy wandering around there at night with terrible street lighting but I just did. The locals were all very friendly!

I always feel quite safe in central London too.

AgnesX · 10/01/2024 14:28

I've never felt unsafe living anywhere including Glasgow. These days I'm a bit more careful of where I go though especially on foot.

Cerealkiller4U · 10/01/2024 14:29

Belgium. I used to kite buggy and there was a yearly festival in bekgium

they kept their shops open and all sorts

stayathomer · 10/01/2024 14:29

Australia- Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast … maybe I just never encountered anything unsettling but it seemed so easy! I live in Ireland in the midlands and I’m sad for how unsafe Dublin City feels now- used to be a similarly cheery and community feel to it

CaribouCarafe · 10/01/2024 14:30

Edinburgh and Dubai

I agree about Dubai. I know MN hates Dubai , but it is one of the few places that I felt safe when walking around at night.

Cloudysky81 · 10/01/2024 14:33

Singapore more or less live there full time.
Come back to London frequently and have to completely change my behaviour.

MsAnnFrope · 10/01/2024 14:34

I lived in Hamburg for a bit and felt super safe.
but really I’ve always felt safe wherever I’ve lived including London, Edinburgh, Liverpool and rural Yorkshire and Lancashire. Either I’m naive or I have a low bar for safety.
I didn’t feel safe in either Marrakesh or Dublin - felt like I had to be on my guard the whole time in both places.

DaftFlerken · 10/01/2024 14:35

Tokyo - unbelievably safe & helpful city

Finbrek · 10/01/2024 14:35

Whitby.

Shortly after I moved there the local paper ran a big story about car getting its window smashed in the car park. A couple of days later there was another story - the car hadn't been smashed and in fact no car has ever been damaged in the car park.

You do have to watch out for vampires though.

Isthisblocked · 10/01/2024 14:35

I feel very safe, where I live in a large village in the north east of England on the south side of the river Tyne.

weegiemum · 10/01/2024 14:36

Glasgow, where I live now. I even live on the edge of one of the housing "schemes" and still feel safe.

I'm disabled but get out and about as much as I can. I'm never short of a helping hand with my bags and have never been taken advantage of when I'm slow.

There's a saying that the city has adopted "People Make Glasgow" and it's true! We had a guest stay with us for COP26 from Rwanda and he loved the people here. It's really the friendliest place in the world!

(Unless you go out on match day wearing your colours. That's on you though!)

Crikeyalmighty · 10/01/2024 14:37

I felt very safe when we lived in Copenhagen don't feel unsafe here in Bath. There have been a few nasty incidents recently but not with general public- amongst particular groups etc -
I never felt unsafe when we lived in east Twickenham- but obviously in London you have to be on your guard- as is true for most of UK these days- nicer places attract scallys sadly!!

toycat · 10/01/2024 14:37

I felt very safe in Copenhagen and Japan. It was also very clean.... But ££££

Pallisers · 10/01/2024 14:38

I felt very safe indeed in Singapore. I live in the US in the greater Boston area - nice but not particularly super-wealthy area - and I feel really safe here. If dd and I take the dog for a walk, we would often leave the front door unlocked rather than bring a key. I'd go for a walk at night with the dog no problem. I've never been the victim of any type of crime in my 30 years here.
