I found the thread on here about the places people have found unsafe very interesting.
Where are the places you’ve visited/lived that have felt the safest?
I live in Portugal at the moment and feel v safe in most areas. I also felt safe staying in New South Wales in Australia and Cornwall and Abersoch

I think whoever said above you do feel safer where you are used to. For me the countryside freaks me out a bit. If I'm there on holiday and go for a run and there is no-one around I keep thinking around here no-one will hear you scream!

In London people will always hear you scream - they'll probably ignore it though and carry on with their day.😂

@SuddenlyOld Why Northern France

DH likes to visit war graves and battlefields so we often go to Ypres and Belgium. We decided to visit France so stayed in Lens which had an oppressive atmosphere and was dirty and unkempt. Arras the next night was even worse. Nicer town but still oppressive. The hotel was so bad (and it was in the town square) we left and went to Boulogne sur mer. They had some kind of street sale, like a car boot sale, but again we felt like intruders. People weren't friendly and kids roamed about in gangs.

Am from liverpool always felt safe in the centre and southern part (can’t comment on the estates though ) , now in york this feels really safe however never felt safe in Leeds didn’t find it friendly

Finland and Iceland for me. My sister recently went to Dubai and said she felt very safe there.

I don't think I've felt unsafe anywhere and I've travelled quite a lot. I'm a Londoner and have always felt safe in SE London, where I live, and so have my now adult children.
Mumbai was a little unsettling but that was probably due to the extreme poverty and I felt uneasy being there.
Oh, actually some parts of Florida I would have felt unsafe if I'd been alone.

Another who lives in Portugal, the Algarve. Feel very safe here.

Well different people feel safe in different places. I know many Asian people who don't feel particularly safe or welcomed in rural south west areas. I'm Spanish and I went into a pub in rural Yorkshire and someone shouted out something to me. So yes I do feel safer in cities.
That said, I stayed with my kids in New ham, and felt a bit worried walking about at night. And I love London, I would think nothing of walking around Peckham, Lewisham or Camberwell at night.

I live semi rurally in Scotland and often leave cars/doors unlocked, it's just statistics really. We have our issues but they are rare. One murder in my lifetime. I think city wise, there's the safety in mumbers element, I'm optimistic that in a serious situation most people will help.

Liverpool in my experience did not feel safe. Some would take advantage of you more like. And rob you. Any bike left anywhere would have it's saddle, lights, anything of value robbed within minutes. Doors had to be locked. Local people looked after their own, strangers not so much. It is a superficial place, on the outside it seems jolly, friendly, but deeper down it is insular, and very protective of it's own. Which is nice for the locals I guess. Obviously not all Liverpudlians are like that.

Where about in Liverpool did you live? I’m in South Liverpool and the people are lovely and welcoming, and I’m not a scouser. I feel very safe where we live. Probably more safe than anywhere I’ve ever lived.

Feel safest living in London! I love how late at night people are out and about for good reason so it’s not just dodgy people at night like you get in some quieter areas of the world. I would feel safer walking around at 1am in central london than I would in the cotswolds, for example.

I immediately thought of central London and how you can wander around in the early hours of the morning.

I've just returned from Japan and it's the safest I've ever felt. Even in the cities, so much safer than London

Trixiefirecracker · 11/01/2024 17:00

Japan May feel safe but it’s got a really weird sexualised view of young girls. The age of consent has only just recently changed from 13 to 16. ☹️

That's got nothing to do with feeling safe going out at night.
