I found the thread on here about the places people have found unsafe very interesting.
Where are the places you’ve visited/lived that have felt the safest?
I live in Portugal at the moment and feel v safe in most areas. I also felt safe staying in New South Wales in Australia and Cornwall and Abersoch

I feel very safe, where I live in a large village in the north east of England on the south side of the river Tyne.

Hexham?

LaChienneDesFromages · 10/01/2024 14:40

I’ve also never felt unsafe living anywhere. Including various places in the East End, the US (to be fair, suburban Boston) and Namibia.

I’ve travelled all over and have felt safe 99.9% of the time.

Switzerland, Lugano. Went there for work and. I walked home in the pitch black at 1am and there were police everywhere. They would talk to you and the crime rate out there is 0.5%

toddlermam · 10/01/2024 14:44

Felt incredibly safe in Thailand, more so than the U.K.

inappropriateraspberry · 10/01/2024 14:45

Funnily enough, Liverpool! As a student there I always felt if something happened, (taken ill etc) there would be someone ready to help you.

I felt very safe living in Madrid. You see people of all ages out and about late at night. Also always feel safe in London where I live now.

AyeRightYeAre · 10/01/2024 14:48

I've lived all over Scotland and feel safe nearly all the time. I lived in some areas where you don't even need your lock your door.

Obviously there are certain areas in the cities that I wouldn't feel comfortable if alone in the middle of the night. And I avoid areas around football grounds on derby days.

But apart from that pretty much all good.

Devilshands · 10/01/2024 14:49

Kentucky was lovely.

Sevenoaks is also nice - happily walked home from the town centre on a Friday/Saturday night by myself in my early twenties!

Also, weirdly feel safe in South London at night - but I grew up there so I know the area well. Not sure many others would though!

I felt very safe in Tokyo as well. I also saw little children catching the train to school and people would keep an eye on them in case they got too close to the edge of the platform. People were lovely and helpful there. I'd love to go back ❤️

greencatz · 10/01/2024 14:55

Dubai and also Tel Aviv

Caledoniablue · 10/01/2024 15:20

I felt very safe in Inverness.

I also live in Portugal now OP, and feel safe here. Where we are is a lovely safe, family based community and I'm glad we're bringing DS up here

Maicon · 10/01/2024 15:22

Sweden, Switzerland, Luxembourg

ManateeFair · 10/01/2024 15:27

The thing is, 'feeling' safe doesn't mean a place necessarily is safe. Often, people feel unsafe in places that are the most different to what they're used to, but that doesn't mean it's a fair or true assessment of how safe a place is. I guess it's all part of the unconscious biases we all have.

For example, people who live in very rural places will feel unsafe in a big busy city, while people who live in big busy cities sometimes feel unsafe in very rural places because they're not used to walking along deserted, unlit rural paths at night or whatever.

I can't actually think of anywhere I've felt 'unsafe' except for certain parts of the Deep South in the USA. And even then it was only a 'Well, glad we're not getting out of the car in this town' sort of feeling.

Howcoldjesus · 10/01/2024 15:29

@Caledoniablue Ahh really, whereabouts?

We lived in Singapore for 5 years and safety never even crossed my mind there. It's very liberating.

Asiatoyork · 10/01/2024 15:33

Used to live in south London and always felt safe, but now in Singapore and it’s a whole different level. No need to lock up bikes, reserve tables with your phone and know it will still be there.

Cobras in the garden are a thing however, so there’s that!

Iwanttheraintostop · 10/01/2024 15:34

I feel safe in London but I think Londoners are used to London and don't find things threatening e.g my friend from rural Surrey was on the tube with me and there was a sketchy looking guy - she was very uncomfortable and we switched compartments. I was fine, I'm used to odd people on the tube and unless they threaten me or anyone else (which I haven't experienced - just begging) I ignore it.

closingdownsale · 10/01/2024 15:37

Most towns in Northumberland

adriftabroad · 10/01/2024 15:37

Lived in so many cities/places/countries. Inc London,Canada,Spain,France,Italy etc: never felt unsafe.

Travelling:
Only place felt unsafe:Morocco (but I love it and return often)
Very unsafe:Tunisia (will not return)

Agree with@ManateeFair

ClareBlue · 10/01/2024 15:39

Yes, I think @ManateeFair has it about right. It's what you are used to that general makes you feel safe, or at least not unsafe.

Winter3000 · 10/01/2024 15:39

Safest places I've been to:
China
Japan
UAE
Bahrain
Oman
Norway
Singapore
Egypt
South Korea
Maldives

bexboz · 10/01/2024 15:43

Counterintuitive but New York City - manhattan. Everything is open basically 24/7 and there are always people everywhere. Always felt safe!

Comedycook · 10/01/2024 15:43

Went to a relatively quiet tourist resort in Majorca last year....I felt really safe there. Left my bag on the beach and went swimming in the sea.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 10/01/2024 15:45

weegiemum · 10/01/2024 14:36

Glasgow, where I live now. I even live on the edge of one of the housing "schemes" and still feel safe.

I'm disabled but get out and about as much as I can. I'm never short of a helping hand with my bags and have never been taken advantage of when I'm slow.

There's a saying that the city has adopted "People Make Glasgow" and it's true! We had a guest stay with us for COP26 from Rwanda and he loved the people here. It's really the friendliest place in the world!

(Unless you go out on match day wearing your colours. That's on you though!)

We live in Edinburgh, and my teenage daughters strongly dislike Glasgow. They've never felt safe when visiting.
I grew up near Glasgow and went to uni there. I agree with you and think my kids are snowflakes Grin
