DP believes some psychics are real, I think he's lost it

A discussion about a documentary I watched last night descended into an argument today when chatting over dinner. It was about Derren Brown and how he tests so called psychic mediums in an attempt to prove that it's a load of old rubbish - which I agree with him on.

He got majorly arsey with me when I told him about cold reading and the other techniques they use, such as using vague statements that could apply to most people in the sitters demographic. IE, telling an elderly lady that they have a parent in the spirit world who had a dodgy knee.

I asked him for some examples from which he reached his conclusion that some are genuine but he wasn't forthcoming with anything of any substance, simply mentioning some bloke from the Ghost Adventures series who wanders around buildings 'debunking' certain things for plausible deniabily then making up shite of his own to 'prove' the contact.

This is a hill I'm prepared to die on as I will not accept that such tosh is in any way genuine.

AIBU to say that absolutely all psychics are full of shit?

Many are I agree, they get very good at reading people and guessing things based on a small bit of info they are given or pick up.

However I don't think we can absolutely discount the possibility that some people have some kind of ability, I don't even know if psychic is the right word, but I think its possible.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 21/12/2023 00:27

Don't argue with him about it, he won't change his mind, even if just to be stubborn. Just leave the subject alone or you'll get more and more infuriated, that way madness lies!

MiddleagedBeachbum · 21/12/2023 00:31

How the hell can anyone say???

You seriously think we fully know and understand how the mind and psyche work? Of course we don’t. All scientists agree on this.

Therefore if other animals can interact telepathically then can some humans?

who knows? No one!

such a shame you see it as a right / wrong answer like you have to win rather than an open ended discussion about all the possibilities there are in this universe

Lifeasiknowitisout · 21/12/2023 00:36

So what if he thinks there’s a possibility it could be true? Or thinks some psychics are real?

Why prepare to die on this hill? I mean if you are prepared to split up with him over it, do it.

Whole I might not believe they are real, I think trying to force someone to agree with me. Why is it so important to you that he thinks the same way you do?

PeopleAreWeird · 21/12/2023 00:38

Some people believe, some dont

Why argue over it

RainDropsStorm · 21/12/2023 00:40

The thing that stood out for me was that yous ended up arguing over it. It's perfectly fine for each of you to have different thoughts and opinions.

Your post came over rather aggressive and its your way or the highway.

If i were you it's not physics I'd be worrying about it would be my relationship/communication skills.

ExTheCheater · 21/12/2023 00:41

You are incorrect. He can believe what he likes.

Jacfrost · 21/12/2023 00:42

I think you're right that most are using cold reading, vague statements etc.

But what proof do you actually have that nobody possesses psychic ability? I wholeheartedly believe that telepathy is real for example. I've experienced it far too much in my life for it to be coincidence.

EmmaEmerald · 21/12/2023 00:45

Interesting that you'd die on this hill...makes me wonder if he's had an experience he doesn't want to share.

theduchessofspork · 21/12/2023 00:47

That’s quite a thing to discover about your partner.. has he been unwell?!

ValerieMoore · 21/12/2023 00:50

Holly Wells’ father wrote that he talked to a psychic in the days after her disappearance. The psychic told him that she was gone and that her body was located to the east of Soham and that she was in shallow water. This was true. He said the murderer had a red car and described the view from his house (there was something like a windmill in the background). These suggestions were also true.

He said the letters C an O were in the address of the property she died in (College Close, where Huntley’s house was) and that Kevin Wells had walked past this house during his search (Kevin met Huntley outside the house and spoke to him within hours of the girls’ disappearance).

He described Maxine Carr as “mousy” looking and Ian Huntley as mid- thirties with dark hair, and that they were not from the area and have northern accents (Huntley is from Grimsby, not sure about the accent).

Singasongofsixpence24 · 21/12/2023 00:51

I've namchanged to say I am psychic and it's mostly awful. I don't practice professionally and have lost many 'friends' because all they want is card readings/ healings and what do you think will happen/ any weird feelings etc. Because I'm accurate its quite addictive for them. When I put up boundaries they soon stop calling. It's very hard to know a person's loved one is going to die and not be able to tell them or worse again know when and where and how my own mother would die. Sadly I often really hope I'm wrong or some details are wrong but too often they're not. It's really very painful and can be nightmareish at times. I don't tell new acquaintances that I can do anything like that anymore.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 21/12/2023 00:59

What a weird thing to insist you must be right about...

He is allowed to believe differently

Ponoka7 · 21/12/2023 01:03

I went to one at a summer fair type thing. All donations to charity. She told me my father's name and cause of death and that he wasn't from the UK. My DP was older than me and I had step children, which she described. Then she told me that my DP's brother was with us. I said that he didn't have a brother who had died. She pushed, I repeated what I'd said and she gave me facts about my DP's family, but because I still said that his only brother was still alive, she said that we would move on because he was becoming agitated. I later told my DP, who then told me about his brother who had died as a child, but out of respect they never spoke about him because it upset their mother too much.
I've had other instances over the years, so I do believe that there are genuine psychics.

hoobanoobie · 21/12/2023 01:06

Why can't you respect each other's separate beliefs? It's neither here nor there who is actually correct. He might take comfort from believing, just as you might take comfort from avoiding being scammed. Don’t try to one up him, you're picking a fight and you expect him to give in and agree with you.
Leave it alone, I doubt it has that much bearing on either of your lives that it's going to become a huge problem. He's not going to piss all the money away on psychics, no more than you would piss money away investigating to expose frauds. I’m sure there are other things on which you disagree. Do you have to die on this particular hill? What would you gain other than making him feel humiliated?

Oh....you are the kind of person I'd love to have a reading from, especially if I get to hear the bad stuff too.

I can see why you find it awful though.

@Dpi8 look on the bright side, if you were to die on this hill he could keep in touch 😂

Tourmalines · 21/12/2023 01:14

I'm with you , load of shite .

pitterpatteroftinyfeet · 21/12/2023 01:15

Well, I once didn't believe either, until a few random meetings with a couple of people who are psychics and healers. All I can say is that there's definitely a lot more between heaven and earth than we are taught to believe at school. I've had, amongst other things, my back healed from severe pains and things seen about my present and future that none of them could possibly have known. They were specific things, not generic nonsense.

@Singasongofsixpence24 doesn’t this mean you can intervene ?

Ormside · 21/12/2023 01:26

I never believed in anything like this. SIL visited a psychic purely to keep her friend company. She didn't pay anything. She was told that her brother would soon be getting a new addition to his family and she would be named Judy (not her real name).

SiL thought it was bull because she knew our family was complete and it was a name we'd never choose. She didn't mention it at the time.

A couple of months later we rescued a labrador. She was several years old so we didn't change her name. SIL lives 300 miles away, had no idea we were looking to rescue a dog. She was astounded when we told her the name... Judy.
