DH won't let me watch Jools Holland!

I love watching Later with Jools Holland. I think he gets really good new acts on there that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. There's a good variety of performers and most of the songs are enjoyable with some excellent discoveries. I love relaxing with a glass of wine and watching it at the end of each week. DH hates it and says the music is rubbish!

Of course, I want to watch the Hootenanny at New Year's. And DH will moan. We're in our 50s. DH only likes classical music, jazz at a push, and a very few pop musicians such as the Beatles and Wilco. I don't want to listen to the same old stuff all the time!

I agree with you, love Jools. We went to one of the Later recordings a few years ago, where we discovered some great new stuff including Royal Blood. It was their first outing before the festival circuit.

It’s not the same without Hootenanny in the background at New Year, even if it is filmed in October!

Jools is fab! So much new talent as well as old. Your DH needs to get with it!

OhComeOnFFS · 16/12/2023 19:49

Does he know anything about Jules Holland? He's one of the most talented musicians around.

Fannyfiggs · 16/12/2023 19:50

What does your DH want to watch at NY?

I'm not a fan of Jools Holland but DH likes it so we watch it cos I'm not fussed on what we watch.

WitcheryDivine · 16/12/2023 19:50

Sorry but he’s right the hootenanny is dire. Still if you want to watch it he can go out I guess.

bellac11 · 16/12/2023 19:51

We like Jools, but if one of us doesnt like what the other wants to watch they either suffer in silence or do something else

My OH cant stand Adele, says she causes a 'din and a racket'

LlynTegid · 16/12/2023 19:53

The Hootenanny is not like the other Jools Holland Later shows. I could forgive not watching that, but the regular shows are one of the best opportunities for a variety of new and established artists.

alpenguin · 16/12/2023 20:06

I’m with the husband on jools especially the hootenanny- that said I live with a pop culture snob and it can be draining when you want to watch trash tv or listen to cheesy music and he can’t stroke his chin to it so huffs and puffs the entire time.

Torganer · 16/12/2023 20:07

Do you have a second iPad/tv? Can’t you just watch it on that?

I sniggered at this Grin my ex partner wouldn't entertain anything made in the last century because it all needed to be psychoanalysed

gingerprime · 16/12/2023 21:01

Fwiw OP, I don't regularly watch Jools Holland other than the NYE Hootenanny but tell him to go in the next room

Circularargument · 16/12/2023 21:02

I loathe Jools Holland but you should watch what you like. No-one is forcing him to.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 16/12/2023 21:04

Tell him he’s not a dictator and we aren’t in 1950 anymore

BIossomtoes · 16/12/2023 21:05

I’d be having an early night on NYE with my iPad, a bottle of fizz and a box of truffles if I were you @ImTheGoat. Fuck ‘im.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/12/2023 21:07

Jools gives me the absolute creeps for some reason, can’t watch him. Can you compromise for NYE and you get that but he chooses a film beforehand or something?

mrwalkensir · 16/12/2023 21:09

Has he ever listened to Squeeze?

cezannesapple · 16/12/2023 21:10

I’m with your DH. Can’t stand Jools. His guests are good but his awful ingratiating intros are creepy as is his insistence at playing duets with all and sundry.

mrwalkensir · 16/12/2023 21:11

If you're in your 50s, your teenage years had some of the best pop ever, plus the more classical Bowie etc. He's an idiot if he's not even caught up with that.

jemenfous37 · 16/12/2023 21:11

He won't let you?
One or both of you need to get a grip

Crescentmoonshine · 16/12/2023 21:13

I don’t want to watch jools Holland, if my husband did I’d just watch something else or read or whatever while he watches it. Your husband can’t ’not let’ you watch tv!

Agree completely. He turns my stomach. Don't know what exactly it is about him I can do about 30 seconds then I have to change channels. Your husband shouldnt have him inflicted on him if he can't stand him either. He can just go in another room

Honeyroar · 16/12/2023 21:15

My husband and I massively disagree over Jools Holland too! He bores the pants off me My husband loves him.

UsingChangeofName · 16/12/2023 21:20

YABU to say "DH won't let me watch anything"

You are a grown woman. You don't need anyone's permission to watch anything.

DH and I have quite different tastes, so there aren't that many things we watch together, but neither of us needs to give the other permission to watch what we like. Confused

jemenfous37 · 17/12/2023 06:31

@ImTheGoat why do you let him dictate your viewing
And to all the other posters who have missed this point but are only proffering a view on JH - wtf?

margotrose · 17/12/2023 06:34

Who cares if DH hates it?

He can go in another room or go up to bed if he doesn't want to watch it.
