DH won't let me watch Jools Holland!

I love watching Later with Jools Holland. I think he gets really good new acts on there that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. There's a good variety of performers and most of the songs are enjoyable with some excellent discoveries. I love relaxing with a glass of wine and watching it at the end of each week. DH hates it and says the music is rubbish!

Of course, I want to watch the Hootenanny at New Year's. And DH will moan. We're in our 50s. DH only likes classical music, jazz at a push, and a very few pop musicians such as the Beatles and Wilco. I don't want to listen to the same old stuff all the time!

I am with your husband. I can't stand jowls Holland. Hevmajes my teeth itch. His voice grates on me

Watch something you both enjoy at new year !

ImTheGoat · 17/12/2023 07:15

Wow I guess I should have labelled this as "lighthearted"! Of course DH doesn't dictate anything, he just doesn't like Jools Holland!

We have different tastes in most things, music, literature, tv.
Either one tolerates what the other chooses without grumbling, or they potter off and do something else. I’ve learnt to enjoy stuff I wouldn’t have tried, as has he. Although opera makes me put headphones on, or go out.
At an early stage in our relationship, some time in the 80s, I booted him out of the living room so I could watch naff sci-fi without a running, disparaging commentary. There was A Conversation and we moved on.

I dislike jules Holland - although largely because it inevitably features some jazz, an aging rock star from the mid 20th century and a deaf man with a kazoo sitting on a bucket in the mix somewhere. Oh and because jules himself is smugly tinkling away on the piano.

You’d imagine that, of all the possible music on tv possibilities, jules Holland would be most likely to have something your DH likes on it (incidentally I do like Wilco too).

STBXH used to insist on watching it every Hogmanay. Now I can just go to bed instead. 🤣

flowerchild2000 · 17/12/2023 07:36

Edited to add- just saw your lighthearted comment! Sorry didn't mean to pile on!

I can't imagine controlling someone else's musical tastes. That's really pigheaded. It's sad he doesn't consider the fact it makes you happy too. I would have to drink a lot of wine to live with someone so boring and mean!

You have perfectly summed up my objections to Later with JH Grin

CaramelMac · 17/12/2023 07:38

I like to watch Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday mornings, DH can’t stand it so he finds something else to do, he wouldn’t dream of ‘not letting’ me.

Suddenlychrimbo · 17/12/2023 07:39

Hootenanny with its cringy contrived fake NYE thing is appalling.

I also hate Hollands insistence on playing his god awful piano with his much more talented guests.

Grumpynan · 17/12/2023 07:44

Reading these posts I think jools Holland must be a marmite.

just for the record DH thinks he’s great I hate, ( i love marmite DH hates )

every year he says let’s see it in with Jools, and every year I say , let’s not 😂.

Yes you see, why does he think he’s so great

I sniggered at this Grin my ex partner wouldn't entertain anything made in the last century because it all needed to be psychoanalysed

that sounds dire...

Sounds like our household! Dh usually compromises and does something we all like then will be found on NYD watching it on catch up once he realised that it was all recorded months ago anyway and that actually the musicians are off at real parties over new year.

On news years go out! Life is too short to stay home watching tv. Our local jazz club has a party, see if yours does (though we are going to the pub who are have a black tie dinner and live band, it's helpfully about 200 steps from my front door!)

Prangle · 17/12/2023 08:02

I’m with your DH. Can’t stand Jools bastard Holland and the ridiculous NYE show gives me the absolute rage. I can’t even say the stupid name of it without wanting to rip my TV off the wall. DH insists on watching it every year - the last one was the worst, “celebs” leaning awkwardly on the piano trying to get through the previously constructed interview, the shit “music”, Holland wobbling around screaming “hootenanny” randomly like an absolute nutcase - it actually spoils NYE for me. Can’t fucking stand it. I’ve often said if DH and I ever divorced, the thought of never having to watch that shit again would get me through it.

I’d rather watch bloody Jules Holland than go to a jazz club.

At least you get the man with the kazoo and the aging rock star you’d forgotten existed to water down the jazz.

I had an exp who thought there was some moral and cultural superiority in liking jazz. He used to subject me to fucking jazz drumming. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Leavethebathalone · 17/12/2023 08:03

I'm glad you said lighthearted, a lady at work responds to any conversations regarding TV with 'oh we only watch wildlife documentaries, my husband doesn't like TV'. And I think that's very sad that she thinks of herself as an extension of her husband's preferences. As PPs have said, second TV or just responding with 'well I think he's great'. My DH can't stand the reality TV I watch, whilst I get bored with his war movies.

Westfacing · 17/12/2023 08:09

I used to watch on NYE until I realised it wasn't live! Felt I'd been duped Xmas Grin

You know, that is a great idea! I'll give DH an ultimatum- either his music and OUT or my music and IN. I also like going out more than he does plus he will have sticker shock when he sees how much a night out for New Years costs. But either way, I win 😂.

@Prangle are you actually my DH in disguise? I think you've explained his side perfectly and the way you've put it does make it sound like torture! I can't stand marmite and if anyone made me eat that on NYE I'd have the rage also, so I do understand.

@Leavethebathalone that's so sad - definitely not the way it goes in my household. To be perfectly honest I almost always get my way with what we watch but then I just have to deal with a black cloud sitting grumpily in the next armchair. It does kind of put a dampener on things!

I once met an older couple who told me the secret to a long happy marriage is - separate sitting rooms! I thought that was a bit sad at the time but I'm slowly coming round to the idea.

To be fair, Jools Holland is one of the most irritating men alive.

This made me laugh way too much 😆 I feel exactly the same.

Dh and I don’t like to watch the same things. It’s fine. We just do our own thing, you don’t have to do everything together.

10HailMarys · 17/12/2023 12:15

I would rather spend NYE in prison than watching the sodding Hootenanny. Possibly for the opposite reason to your DH though - I find Jools Holland’s shows really dull and worthy and middle-aged Observer Music Critic friendly. It’s all so… I don’t know. It’s just not for me. I also find the chat painfully awkward. And the knowledge that it’s pre-recorded somehow makes it cringeworthy.

However, if my DP was desperate to watch it, I would put up with it, I’m sure. I’d probably just get hammered while doing a jigsaw puzzle in the same room 🤣

Marwoodsbigbreak · 17/12/2023 12:23

I don’t enjoy JH but I can’t imagine a situation where a man would be telling me what I can or can’t watch on TV.
