DH won't let me watch Jools Holland!

I love watching Later with Jools Holland. I think he gets really good new acts on there that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise. There's a good variety of performers and most of the songs are enjoyable with some excellent discoveries. I love relaxing with a glass of wine and watching it at the end of each week. DH hates it and says the music is rubbish!

Of course, I want to watch the Hootenanny at New Year's. And DH will moan. We're in our 50s. DH only likes classical music, jazz at a push, and a very few pop musicians such as the Beatles and Wilco. I don't want to listen to the same old stuff all the time!

I would rather spend NYE in prison than watching the sodding Hootenanny. Possibly for the opposite reason to your DH though - I find Jools Holland’s shows really dull and worthy and middle-aged Observer Music Critic friendly. It’s all so… I don’t know. It’s just not for me. I also find the chat painfully awkward. And the knowledge that it’s pre-recorded somehow makes it cringeworthy.

However, if my DP was desperate to watch it, I would put up with it, I’m sure. I’d probably just get hammered while doing a jigsaw puzzle in the same room 🤣

Yes. Full and worthy middle aged observer critic friendly is a good description.

with the added awfulness of it being a dreadful, pre-recorded new year special.

You have perfectly summed up my objections to Later with JH Grin

And mine 🤣

CoatOfArms · 17/12/2023 13:21

Cannot stand Jools Holland and his "Hootenanny" is just the pits.

iklboo · 17/12/2023 13:39

DH was most upset to discover Hootenanny wasn't a child minder with big boobs (joke).

Thanks for expressing everything I feel about the bloody thing. The “compromise” we came to (it wasn’t - I won) was no live telly whatsoever on NYE. Too much chance someone will accidentally flick over to Jools duetting with a thoroughly fucked off looking elderly bloke called Wild Dougie McGuffins while equally bored old stars mill exhaustedly behind waiting for death.

Better options: go out, have people round, play a game, sit in perfect silence contemplating the infinite or - as @10HailMarys says - get locked up.

EmpressSoleil · 17/12/2023 13:54

I'm also with your DH. Even the word hootenanny massively irritates me. I had an ex who insisted on it and it was torture. I was sooo happy the new year after I broke up with him, not being forced to watch it. I would genuinely rather just sit and stare at the wall!

These days I'm in bed before midnight anyway so it's irrelevant. If you really want to see it can you just watch it on catch up alone? I mean its not as if its a live broadcast anyway. Its a bit mean to force it on someone who hates it.

ImTheGoat · 17/12/2023 18:48

As an admittedly rather dull and middle aged person who thinks Observer Music Critics are immeasurably cooler than I am, I guess I'm the perfect target audience for Jools. Just on the last "Later" episode I fell in love with CMAT, really liked Cleo Sol, and enjoyed seeing Bombay Bicycle Club and Billy Bragg again. I thought Sekou was very talented also. DH is working tonight and I'm rewatching it!

I like "Later" better than the NYE programme that shall remain nameless for fear of upsetting anyone 😂, but do enjoy both. I find Jools quite avuncular and think he's friendly and really supportive of younger up and coming musicians. I didn't notice him playing piano at all on the latest episode? But I could have missed some sneaky playing along (I tend to just listen while messing with my phone).

For those who like pop music but think Observer Music Critic stuff is naff - then what's good? How do you discover new music? Honest question!

I don't watch any TV without a plot and I still listen to everything I listened to in the 90s. But I discover the odd new song via a soundtrack or Spotify daily playlists.

That said, if I can sit through post-David Tennant Dr Who to make DH happy I think yours could try and suffer Jools a bit more gladly if you watch something else first.

InefficientProcess · 17/12/2023 19:05

How do you discover new music? Honest question!

Apple Music. Spotify. Tik tok.

I don’t listen to pop music. I still hate Jules Holland.

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/12/2023 19:13

Radio 6 is great for new music.

DenyDenyLieTillYouDie · 17/12/2023 19:15

DH and I have long pondered who on Earth watches Jools Holland, especially on NYE. We assumed he had some dirt on a TV exec that meant they kept allowing it year after year.

I agree with your husband. TV on New Year's Eve is dire anyway but I think the Hootenanny is about as bad as it gets.

Prangle · 18/12/2023 09:51

I honestly wish JH would just fuck off into retirement. He absolutely spoils my NYE every year. DH even dragged me to the live shows a couple of times, it’s beyond ridiculous, everyone just stood there like fucking cows in a shed. I bumped into Noel Gallagher one time coming out the toilets (like literally bumped into him) and he looked as bored and pissed off as I was. I think he was hiding in there, same as me.

Daisies12 · 18/12/2023 09:56

Why on earth can another adult ' not let' you do something. Watch it. He goes elsewhere. Honestly, i despair.

kwetu · 18/12/2023 09:58

Grumpynan · 17/12/2023 07:44

Reading these posts I think jools Holland must be a marmite.

just for the record DH thinks he’s great I hate, ( i love marmite DH hates )

every year he says let’s see it in with Jools, and every year I say , let’s not 😂.

Same here!

@Prangle are you actually my DH in disguise? I think you've explained his side perfectly and the way you've put it does make it sound like torture! I can't stand marmite and if anyone made me eat that on NYE I'd have the rage also, so I do understand.

@Leavethebathalone that's so sad - definitely not the way it goes in my household. To be perfectly honest I almost always get my way with what we watch but then I just have to deal with a black cloud sitting grumpily in the next armchair. It does kind of put a dampener on things!

I once met an older couple who told me the secret to a long happy marriage is - separate sitting rooms! I thought that was a bit sad at the time but I'm slowly coming round to the idea.

DH and I have separate places to sit and watch TV. I like watching darts, reality TV and historical documentaries while he likes watching YouTube videos of various things that don't interest me and sports that aren't darts. He won't watch any serials because he doesn't want the 'commitment' which doesn't suit me.

We still spend plenty of time together but TV is NOT something we do together and I think that's fine. Two places to watch TV is much better than either sitting and watching something that bores the tits off you or watching something you like while the person next to you feels irritated. Or worse, sitting trawling through options in the vain hope of finding something that appeals to both 😫

Reading the thread would lift you out of this "despair" 😂- it's lighthearted fgs!

Oh I hate Jools Holland so firmly with your DH here. My DH watches it religiously, even though he admits it’s shite it’s like he feels he has to watch it, weird!

Have also met JH and he was not a nice man!

ThreeRingCircus · 18/12/2023 16:48

I like his normal show and agree it's a good introduction to new artists.

Unfortunately I can't bear Hootenanny due to all the fake NYE celebrations given the fact it's filmed in the autumn 🤣.

Noel Gallagher seems like that everywhere.

I assume the answer is aversion to change. The hootenanny has become part of the furniture and the BBC fear people who don’t even watch it will complain if they dare make a change.

LondonLass91 · 01/01/2024 18:59

Did you watch it OP? It was fucking dire so hope not for your sake..Raye was good, although Christ hasn't she heard of nipple tape, but loads of bad acts other than that. What did you think?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 19:01

Get two TVs?

Whatsthestorynow · 01/01/2024 19:03

Can’t stand Jools either & I’ve got no idea why we still have to endure him every NYE! Time to pass on the baton surely?
