To be annoyed by people who knock on the door instead of ringing the doorbell?

I live in a terrace. If someone is knocking on the door it's not easy to tell whether it is on our door or on one of the neighbours either side.

Nine times out of ten it is a delivery person.

They will knock on the door. I can't tell whose house it is. It is not our doorbell ringing. A few moments later they will ring the doorbell. I get there and they are grumpy for having waited.

Why not ring the fucking door bell?

It's even a ring doorbell, so I can tell you I'm on my way.

It's not in a hidden place. It's where a normal doorbell would be. It has a glowing light, so it is clearly working.

Why not press the bell !?!?

It happens all the time.

Print out a small "Please Ring the Bell" sign. Problem solved.

Watto1 · 25/11/2023 15:16

I tend to knock because 9 times out of 10 the doorbell doesn’t work. At least you know with a knock!

Orarewedancer · 25/11/2023 15:18

YANBU. We got a ring doorbell so that the dogs wouldn't bark when someone came to the door and wake the baby etc. Waste of money as 95% of people chap the door!

CaptainCallisto · 25/11/2023 15:22

We're and end terrace, with a porch with two double glazed doors. So as well as not being able to tell whose door is actually being knocked on, we quite often don't hear ours at all through the inner porch door (it's a bloody stupid design with the doors at right angles, and I long to knock it down and build a new one!). It drives me barmy!

I even have a sign on the door saying "Please ring the doorbell, we can't hear you knock" with a big fucking arrow pointing at the doorbell. The number of times I've been in the house, the doorbell hasn't rung, and then there's been a card put through saying they'd missed me is unbelievable!

Plus a "please use letterbox, don't just try and shove things under the door." sign.
"Please use the gate, don't climb over the hedge."
Next to the number ten sign "our house is number ten".

Drives me mad. I have hearing loss so my doorbell ringer flashes and is set to very loud. I literally cannot hear a door knock so I have “please ring the bell” sign and still it’s 50:50 as to whether the bell gets rung or not.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 25/11/2023 15:24

God, yes. My sister does this. And knocks quietly, in case she disturbs us. Drives me to irrational levels of irritation. An invitation to our house implicitly includes permission to ring the fecking bell!

OuiOuiKitty · 25/11/2023 15:25

I think you underestimate the amount of people that have doorbells that don't work. It's quicker to knock than to ring the bell, wait 3mins see if someone is going to appear if the bell works, then knock and wait again.

Watto1 · 25/11/2023 15:16

But they never even tried to press it, because it obviously DOES work.

Fine, if it was a shitty, broken looking thing with wires hanging out, you could understand. But it's a new-looking ring doorbell.

YANBU - a knock can't be heard in our house (we have a porch) so this drives me mad. I don't mind if they want to ring AND knock. But knocking is useless, that's why we have a (very visible and modern) doorbell!

I've actually had a job which involved ringing doorbells. You can mostly hear if it is working. And the modern ring/nest ones have a light.

The whole fucking reason to get a ring one is so we can talk to you when we are not home.

Yes this sends me loopy. I can't hear someone knocking on the door unless they're knocking like a bailiff. My ring doorbell sends an alert to my watch so wherever I am I know there's someone at the door.

And you know if a ring bell is working as you can hear it when you press it.

Lauren83 · 25/11/2023 15:33

I would avoid ringing a door bell incase it didn't work, as if no response I would feel obliged to wait for a certain amount of time before knocking so as not to seem impatient, it hadn't occurred to me that people may have a preference.

I knock on my next neighbours a lot but she prefers it to the bell as her and her dog both know it's me from the knock

alfagirl73 · 25/11/2023 15:33

To be fair my ring doorbell looks fine - and continued to look fine when my internet was down recently - so though it still had power etc... the chime didn't work inside so I was grateful when delivery people knocked. A doorbell can look perfectly fine but for whatever reasons might not be heard easily indoors.

Chances are the delivery person has previously had complaints of "why didn't they knock as well? I can't hear the doorbell when I'm in x room..." or whatever. I get why it's annoying - and I do get a bit annoyed when you get 3 nano-seconds to get to the door before they start knocking etc... but they're likely damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Dotjones · 25/11/2023 15:35

YABU, a huge number of doorbells don't work especially these days when so many are wireless battery-powered devices. A knock definitely makes a noise.

Also I think people get put off by Ring doorbells because they don't particularly want to be on camera. So they knock in the hope this particular camera only records when the button is pressed.

LylaLee · 25/11/2023 15:39

At least ring and knock. I'm not coming down from the attic just because next door has their groceries.

Very annoying and they always knock quietly, can't here it from the kitchen. Then you get a message we tried to deliver... I don't know if they did or not, but 3 people in all day someone would have heard the bell (it's load and very obvious) possibly not a faint knock. Sometimes they knock and leave a parcel on the doorstep. RING THE BELL.

I was once waiting for something important. I got a stool and sat outside my house for that very reason.

And we have the answer right here

I did home delivery for four years and never used to ring the doorbell as so many don't work

MatildaTheCat · 25/11/2023 15:55

DS does this. It gives me the rage though I don’t know why. Also Amazon who have always gone by the time I get to the door. I get that though.

Electrolens · 25/11/2023 16:00

Yanbu. If people hammer on the door (not a knock, a hammering) I don’t answer. It’s horrible, puts me on edge, terrifies my rescue cat and sounds as if the gestapo are about to kick the door in.

If they ring the door bell I run down, answer and all is well.

redsky21 · 25/11/2023 16:01

Fucking hate ring doorbells, make me feel so self conscious knowing I'm being watched so would rather knock 🤷‍♀️

Hbh17 · 25/11/2023 16:05

This thread is hilarious..... in over 30 years, we have never even had a doorbell, and I didn't realise it was such a big deal!

Ring AND knock then. Many people won't know you're there with a knock (read the thread).

Well maybe your house is such that knocking on your door is not indistinguishable from knocking on a neighbour's door.

You don't have a porch that muffles the sound.of a knock.
