To be annoyed by people who knock on the door instead of ringing the doorbell?

I live in a terrace. If someone is knocking on the door it's not easy to tell whether it is on our door or on one of the neighbours either side.

Nine times out of ten it is a delivery person.

They will knock on the door. I can't tell whose house it is. It is not our doorbell ringing. A few moments later they will ring the doorbell. I get there and they are grumpy for having waited.

Why not ring the fucking door bell?

It's even a ring doorbell, so I can tell you I'm on my way.

It's not in a hidden place. It's where a normal doorbell would be. It has a glowing light, so it is clearly working.

Why not press the bell !?!?

It happens all the time.

I'm in a multi-flat building and have stuck up a sign ``Please do not ring the wrong doorbell''.
This causes very satisfactory confusion.

Print out a small "Please Ring the Bell" sign. Problem solved.

Haha like they even read it!

Fucking hate ring doorbells, make me feel so self conscious knowing I'm being watched so would rather knock 🤷‍♀️

You'll be being watched whether you ring or knock - they genuinely are motion activated and record as soon as they detect someone at the door... So you might as well ring...

Ikr. And I'm not watching back, unless we've been burgled or something. I'm not going to be like, "omg, that woman's zit - I want to see it again!"

Maybe when I've finished all the boxsets, books, audiobooks, podcasts and movies I want to watch, I'll have time to sit back and rewatch my ring doorbell.

Ringing or knocking make no difference, you're still being recorded!

redsky21 · 25/11/2023 22:38

I know that, but also alot of people turn off the motion detection so it's not a given.

Chickenpoxhelp · 25/11/2023 22:38

But it records either way? Ours records any motion but doesn’t notify us unless the button is pressed!

Drives me mad when they don't use the bell, we have a double glazed porch and a inner door, can't hear if they knock.
All delivery instructions say ring the bell but most don't.

Friends have an impressive brass knocker
A standard doorbell
A ring doorbell connected to phones
Last time I visited, I used the ring doorbell, stood around for ten minutes
I texted eventually, friend came to door, ring doorbell not working.

If you don't want people to knock, remover the knocker?

So did you try the knocker and the normal doorbell or you just stood there for ten minutes?

What's worse is when the delivery driver or postman rings the doorbell, immediately followed by hammering on the door.

Drives me fucking crazy.

This sounds like a good idea to me? It covers broken doorbells and also people that only hear doorbells but can't hear knocking!!

Went to a neighbours house yesterday. They have a ring doorbell and I knocked because I don’t want to be on camera.

We have a conventional doorbell and to be honest, it’s a bit hit and miss as to whether it goes off. I don’t mind people knocking.

I don't have a ring doorbell but I have a nest one, I get a notification (and recording) sent to my phone if movement is detected, so you may think not pressing the doorbell will stop you from being recorded but it actually won't. Many people also have additional cameras covering the front of their house that don't need a doorbell to be rung, to record.

I live in a country where they won’t ring the bell or knock. They stand there and text you. And wait. And wait. And then there might be a tentative knock on the door if you are lucky. Drives me nuts.

I get this when about 50% of the time when I sell something on Facebook. 🤣 We arrange a time for the person to collect and I give them my address. The buyer then sends me a message at pickup time that they're outside my house. I don't see the message straight away and they message three times. I'm like LOL if you're outside why didn't you ring the bloody bell?! 🤣

IBE45 · 26/11/2023 06:05

This drives me insane too. I often can't tell if someone is knocking the front or the back door either due to my house layout. Then I play the game of running between the doors and missing them. Just ring the bloody doorbell. We have different sounds for each door.

fungibletoken · 26/11/2023 06:10

We have exactly the same, OP - I sympathise. Though worse yet is my DF insisting on knocking on the living room window and giving us a heart attack each time 😅

I tend to knock because 9 times out of 10 the doorbell doesn’t work. At least you know with a knock!

I agree with this. I work in the community. I spend a lot of time waiting on doorsteps only to find that the bell doesn’t actually work. Knocking tends to be more effective!

Just do both then. And as pp have said, some bells ring upstairs or to different rooms, so when you press them they 'seem to not work' because YOU can't hear it chime at the door.
