To be annoyed by people who knock on the door instead of ringing the doorbell?

I live in a terrace. If someone is knocking on the door it's not easy to tell whether it is on our door or on one of the neighbours either side.

Nine times out of ten it is a delivery person.

They will knock on the door. I can't tell whose house it is. It is not our doorbell ringing. A few moments later they will ring the doorbell. I get there and they are grumpy for having waited.

Why not ring the fucking door bell?

It's even a ring doorbell, so I can tell you I'm on my way.

It's not in a hidden place. It's where a normal doorbell would be. It has a glowing light, so it is clearly working.

Why not press the bell !?!?

It happens all the time.

Our doorbell is one of those hopeless intermittent ones. Sorry, delivery people. I know it's crap. It didn't matter when we had a dog, as he provided the first line of information on all callers. But there's a knocker, clearly an invitation to knock the door. If I'm expecting a delivery, most of the time I make sure I'm sitting five feet from the door and could hear a flea fart out there, but often they don't bother to announce themselves. They just leave the package on the doorstep and slope off. I can see their reflection doing exactly that. And every so often there'll be some bright spark who wants to know if this is number 5, as if I've screwed a shiny number 5 on the door at eye level so that number 37 can go incognito.

I have put a large ‘please ring the doorbell’ sign under the door knocker and most people still knock on the door without using either the bell or the door knocker. Drives me nuts.

I think you underestimate the amount of people that have doorbells that don't work. It's quicker to knock than to ring the bell, wait 3mins see if someone is going to appear if the bell works, then knock and wait again.

I tend to knock because 9 times out of 10 the doorbell doesn’t work. At least you know with a knock!

Yup, i knock at doors tonnes of times during my working day. Most doorbells i try dont work,so i knock if i dont hear the bell.

Plankingplanks · 25/11/2023 16:52

Same happens to me. I have a ring doorbell and the postman said he hates ringing them as he doesn't like to be filmed. Apparently one of his mates lost his job for swearing on one.

Hankunamatata · 25/11/2023 16:54

Amazon seem to be like ninjas these days. I only know there is a parcel when email comes through. I live in a tiny house - they def are not knocking the door

LakieLady · 25/11/2023 17:00

Superglue the knocker. That'll stop 'em.

Hamburgler666 · 25/11/2023 17:03

What's worse is when the delivery driver or postman rings the doorbell, immediately followed by hammering on the door.

Drives me fucking crazy.

LadyMacB · 25/11/2023 17:06

Went to a neighbours house yesterday. They have a ring doorbell and I knocked because I don’t want to be on camera.

We have a conventional doorbell and to be honest, it’s a bit hit and miss as to whether it goes off. I don’t mind people knocking.

ginasevern · 25/11/2023 17:48

I hear you OP. I thought this was a phenomenon only I experienced. Why oh why they won't use the door bell is a bloody mystery. And yes, it is always delivery drivers.

Missedmytoe · 25/11/2023 17:55

I feel your pain. We don't have a ring doorbell, just a normal one.
I can't hear a knock on the door if I'm not close to it. I can hear the doorbell from anywhere in the house, and most of the garden.

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2023 18:05

@Watto1 do you try the bell first? I haven't been to a house where you can't hear the bell if it works. I try that then if no response to second try I knock.
It happens to me too.

megletthesecond · 25/11/2023 18:08

Yanbu.
Although it allows me to assess whether a bloke is dodgy / plying for trade if he doesn't use the Ring. I've still got him on video.

muddyford · 25/11/2023 18:11

Same here. And DH never hears the knock though he can hear the bell. But no, couriers all use the knock.

Aydel · 25/11/2023 18:11

I live in a country where they won’t ring the bell or knock. They stand there and text you. And wait. And wait. And then there might be a tentative knock on the door if you are lucky. Drives me nuts.

Which country is this? Why??

It drives me spare. Both my living room and my office are at the back of the house. If the doors are closed or I have my headphones on then I won't hear a door knock, but both rooms have doorbell ringers so I can hear them.

Caswallonthefox · 25/11/2023 18:22

If I had a doorbell I'm sure everyone would ignore it. As it is, I have to give specific instructions to get people to knock loudly on my door and wait. I do have a door knicker but people seem incapable of using it.I live in a flat and I have a flight of stairs to get to my front door.
I keep thinking about getting a doorbell but my front door opens on to the pavement. Plus it's a main thoroughfare for drunk people.

BillytheMountain · 25/11/2023 18:29

YANBU this drives round the flipping bend.
We have an obvious doorbell which rings very loudly, a satisfying sound heard all around the house and beautiful piece of antique glass in the door which when knocked is quiet and very difficult to very hear.
If I do hear the door knock I point out the bell to the muppets that didn’t use it
and ring the bell to let them hear how good it is at its job.
Drives me spare.

RedDawg · 25/11/2023 18:36

@LadyMacB …. Err you will be on ring camera whether you press the button or not on the majority as the6 are often set for motion and ring…. Just so you know x

Are you sure? You can't hear our doorbell when you're outside ringing it, but that's because the sound goes off in the office and living room, not the hall, so we can head it where we are.

VeronicaSawyer89 · 25/11/2023 18:57

YANBU! I don't have a doorbell, but I do have a doorknocker. Every. Single. Delivery. Person raps at the door lightly with their knuckles! Why? The doorknocker is literally right in front of their face! I live in a 3-storey house, unless I'm in the kitchen (next to the front door) I can't hear those quiet little raps. It baffles and infuriates me.
