How do you pronounce 'nothing' and 'rant'

chrimmy · 12/11/2023 23:50

AIBU to think that the way my dp pronounces these words isn't particularly common?

He pronounces 'nothing' with the 'o' sounding as the 'o' does in 'moth'.

I say 'nothing' sounding like 'n-uh-thing'.

He pronounces 'rant' sounding like you'd say 'can't'.

I say 'rant' sounding like you'd say 'ant'.

I'm not saying that either one of us is right as I'm sure both are, but he's the only person I've heard pronounce them this way!

As you do.

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 23:52

I’m with your DH on “nothing” and with you on “rant”. I suspect the word nothing is pronounced very differently in different regions so it might not be a question of being wrong.

Same!

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 12/11/2023 23:53

Where are you both from?
Can't and ant sound the same to me.

MonsteraMama · 12/11/2023 23:53

I've heard "nothing" pronounced the way your DP pronounces it a fair bit. "Nuh-thing" is definitely more common but his way is not unheard of.

"Rant" like "can't" though is like a nail file in my ear drum.

Can't and ant sound the same to me.

That’s what I thought too

Fionaville · 12/11/2023 23:55

Nothing with the O like moth (I usually drop the G though)
Rant like ant.
For me and DH. Both northern.

KingsleyBorder · 12/11/2023 23:57

Can’t and ant sound the same to me too. These threads never work unless you specify the base accent that you are using as reference.

Can’t get worked up about a vowel sound variation in “nothing.” Accents vary, vowels are where this is most apparent.

sopeas · 12/11/2023 23:57

I’ve come across northerners say ‘nothing’ that way tbf but the way he pronounces rant baffles me. How can it rhyme with can’t (carnt pronunciation) unless he’s from somewhere that pronounces it can’t like ant with a c 🤷🏼‍♀️

chrimmy · 12/11/2023 23:57

DP is from Bournemouth and I lived in Essex as a child and then in Hampshire

Sleepwhatsthazzz · 12/11/2023 23:58

I'm with your dh on nothing and I don't know who I'm with on the other one as ant, rant and can't all have the same 'a' sound to me. It is regional accents.

DramaAlpaca · 12/11/2023 23:58

MrShady · 12/11/2023 23:53

Same!

Same here too.

No wonder you pronounce things differently then 😁

Even broad hampshire and broad dorset accents are different

clary · 13/11/2023 00:03

Noth-ing is fair enough, tho I say it nuth-ing.

Rarnt is bizarre tho.

clary · 13/11/2023 00:06

OK for those who say can't and ant the same way, are you saying 'ant' like 'aren't' (weird) or 'can't' like 'cant' (fair enough)?

Fairospop22 · 13/11/2023 00:06

Like moth and ant

Mistressofnone · 13/11/2023 00:15

Never heard it pronounced 'rahnt'. Weird as it's a common word he would hear regularly.

For years I thought 'awry' was pronounced 'awri' because I had seen it written down more than spoken aloud.

CallieQ · 13/11/2023 00:58

Your DH says raaaaant?

LTB

redfacebigdisgrace · 13/11/2023 01:01

Nuh-thing here
can’t, rant and ant all rhyme in my accent (Scottish)

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 13/11/2023 01:06

I pronounce it like you do OP but however its said is due to speaking with your/your DH's regional accent surely? One of them isn't right and one of them isn't wrong.

backtowinter · 13/11/2023 01:33

Nuthing

Can't, any and rant all rhyme

abominablesnowman · 13/11/2023 02:01

At least it's not the 'nuffink' I hear from fully grown adults sometimes.

peakedatseven · 13/11/2023 02:06

I pronounce them the same as you but a lot of people round where I live pronounce nothing like your DP does.

NoMoreFuckingAbout · 13/11/2023 02:27

Nothing with an o sound is common in some northern dialects. .

Rarnt is just wrong on all levels!

I used to live that way and no-one pronounced rant like that. I don't remember nothing being pronounced like that either it was more "nuthin". The locals dialect was West Country like.

Does anyone in his family pronounce those words like that?

With "rarnt" could that be a case of where he saw the word written down long before he heard it said. I know I've had some words like that that I struggle to remember to pronounce them correctly because I said them wrong in my head for so long.

SgtJuneAckland · 13/11/2023 02:39

Nuthing/nothing is regional variation, I've never heard anyone say rarnt
