How do you pronounce 'nothing' and 'rant'

AIBU to think that the way my dp pronounces these words isn't particularly common?

He pronounces 'nothing' with the 'o' sounding as the 'o' does in 'moth'.

I say 'nothing' sounding like 'n-uh-thing'.

He pronounces 'rant' sounding like you'd say 'can't'.

I say 'rant' sounding like you'd say 'ant'.

I'm not saying that either one of us is right as I'm sure both are, but he's the only person I've heard pronounce them this way!

OP posts:

Can't and ant sound the same to me. I interchange how I say nothing.

AffIt · 13/11/2023 11:09

I'm Glaswegian and pronounce both words in the same way as the OP, but my father was from Invernessshire and he (and other friends and family from up that way) pronounced them in the same way as the OP's husband.

It's probably quite a regional thing, in my experience east coast?

On that note, I can't get my head around that advert for Surf that tries to rhyme the 'perf' sound in 'perform' with 'surf'.

I've lived in a lot of places and have never once heard somebody pronounce 'perform' as 'purf-form', where would that be a thing?

Wait wait, I'm so confused about perform. How do you say it? I've not seen the ad but I guess I say 'puh-form' so are they putting the emphasis on 'perf'?

I say “nuthing” and “rant” to rhyme with “ant” (“can’t” for me is with an r sound - “carnt”)

TempName247 · 13/11/2023 11:35

It’s just accent/dialect thing. Like bath and barth. My DH says tong instead of tung (for tongue) which I can’t stand.

MasterBeth · 13/11/2023 11:37

My DP says tong and I say tung, too, but I find it interesting, not something I "can't stand"!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/11/2023 11:38

I have never ever heard it pronounced “rarnt” even! Nib-thing is normal to me, very southern. My DH has northern parents and him and DSS pronounce “one” as “woon”

Edited

I don’t know why, it’s just that word, not my DH in general 🤣

rainbowsparkle28 · 13/11/2023 11:41

Nothing - nuh-thing
Rant - as in can't

TokyoSushi · 13/11/2023 11:41

Moth & Ant here, NW

ShatteredPeace · 13/11/2023 11:42

Nothing with an uh sound.

Rant, can't and and all rhyme.

East coast of Scotland accent.

How do you pronounce “can’t”?

AhBiscuits · 13/11/2023 11:44

Nuthing and carn't.

redfacebigdisgrace · 13/11/2023 11:56

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER not for everyone. I don’t say cannae and dinnae. Some do.

Like glass and glarse.

1990thatsme · 13/11/2023 13:21

My accent is the same as yours OP, therefore YANBU 😂

GinAndJuice99 · 13/11/2023 13:21

Like you do, but nothing pronounced with the 'moth' sound is a normal regional variation. Rant pronounced with an 'ar' sound, however - I've never heard of that before. It makes no sense

1990thatsme · 13/11/2023 13:22

Rant and ant rhyme, but can’t is pronounced cahnt. Not Kant. And definitely not carnt.

dingstein · 13/11/2023 13:32

Nothing - per husband
Rant - per you

museumum · 13/11/2023 13:34

I've never heard anybody say noh-thing. I say nutthing.
On the other hand, rant, can't and ant all rhyme in my accent (mild east coast Scottish).

ManchesterLu · 13/11/2023 13:58

LightDrizzle · 12/11/2023 23:52

I’m with your DH on “nothing” and with you on “rant”. I suspect the word nothing is pronounced very differently in different regions so it might not be a question of being wrong.

This.

Just sounds like a question of accents to me, though. No biggie.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/11/2023 14:05

No one pronounced rant as your husband does surely?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/11/2023 14:06

The two ways of saying “nothing” are just accents but who says “rarnt”

ApoodlecalledPenny · 13/11/2023 14:07

Is he South African?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/11/2023 14:08

Where you’ve gone wrong is using « can’t » as an example as it’s a word thst people pronounce very differently- I think you use RP so like me pronounce it “carn’t” - but that’s why you’re getting confusing answers

I'm Glaswegian and I'd pronounce "perform" as "purr-form"...... lol But I've always been told my accent is a bit unusual as it has a twang from my Island heritage.
