Never got the fuss about ‘When Harry Met Sally’

Just reading a review of Meg Ryan’s new romcom which compares it to When Harry Met Sally as if the latter was some kind of holy grail of filmmaking. AIBU to remember it as a pretty white bread and basic film that has some decent performances and doesn’t actively insult your intelligence, but really isn’t anything special? The speech Billy Crystal gives her at the end about how he loves the little crease in her forehead, or whatever it is, I honestly find really cheesy and cringe. I don’t particularly think they have chemistry. I liked Meg Ryan better in ‘In the Cut’. I would think less of anyone who told me they loved WHMS.

AIBU?

No one ever claimed it was any kind of holy grail of film making, just that it was an effective romcom with some witty writing and performances. I mean, dreck like The Holiday makes it look like Citizen Kane, obviously.

I’m inclined to agree.

I’ve been to the Deli where ‘that’ scene takes place and had a really good pastrami sandwich.

‘When Harry Met Sally…, the holy grail of romantic comedies’

When Harry Met Sally It Was Soooo Sweet!, PopMatters

I find it annoying — and more than a little disingenuous — when critics proclaim the death of a certain art form, as in Nobel laureate V.

I agree. Just found it irritating.

You have no soul and are dead inside.

Alternatively we have different tastes and that's ok. You're still wrong though.

‘When Harry Met Sally is a perfect movie in every shape and form’

(I disagree, obviously, but it often seems to get referred to in these terms)

I personally loved it and its not been beaten by many other rom coms in my eyes

JamSandle · 05/11/2023 21:38

It's definitely one of the best romcoms.

Be great if people could say why, if you think IABU? What did you love about it?

I loved it, and can recite huge chunks of it.... Billy Crystal and Carrie Fisher are both VERY funny.

"When you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible "

What's not to love? Hands down one of the best romcoms

ACatCalledPuss · 05/11/2023 21:42

YABU - best romcom ever

tothesea · 05/11/2023 21:43

I love it and I’m not usually a rom com kinda gal. It’s one of those films I can always watch..and have done at different stages of my life when I got different things out of it.
There’s so many great lines, it’s beautifully filmed, comedy, pathos and romance. What’s not to like OP?

tothesea · 05/11/2023 21:44

And yes! I have been to Katz deli too.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/11/2023 21:46

I’ve seen it once, yes it’s funny but I wouldn’t rush to watch it again. So yes I agree with you OP.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 05/11/2023 21:46

Thought it was shite.

I loved the time lines and the character development. How much they changed over the years and their developing friendship that turned into lasting love. I loved the look over each others shoulders at the new year party as they both finally realised how they felt. The sex must have been amazing after that.

For what it's worth I hate the orgasm scene. I know it's easy to fake it but the "Yes Yes Yes!!" screaming in my eyes is ridiculous

It’s kind of on the tourist trail. Yep, been there too.

Cheeseandlobster · 05/11/2023 21:49

I have also been to Katz deli 😊

dreamingbohemian · 05/11/2023 21:50

95% of rom coms are unfunny, unoriginal, formulaic nonsense. So yes this one seems great in comparison.

But you don't have to like it. I found the Holiday unwatchable but apparently everyone loves that one.

TheMarzipanDildo · 05/11/2023 21:50

Well I love it. Each to their own!

Osprey67 · 05/11/2023 21:50

'i was being nice!!!'

tothesea · 05/11/2023 21:52

‘You made a women miaow?’

dreamingbohemian · 05/11/2023 21:56

Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby are actually the best part of the film.
