Never got the fuss about ‘When Harry Met Sally’

Just reading a review of Meg Ryan’s new romcom which compares it to When Harry Met Sally as if the latter was some kind of holy grail of filmmaking. AIBU to remember it as a pretty white bread and basic film that has some decent performances and doesn’t actively insult your intelligence, but really isn’t anything special? The speech Billy Crystal gives her at the end about how he loves the little crease in her forehead, or whatever it is, I honestly find really cheesy and cringe. I don’t particularly think they have chemistry. I liked Meg Ryan better in ‘In the Cut’. I would think less of anyone who told me they loved WHMS.

AIBU?

It is one of the best written comedies of the last 60 years. Every line is fantastic. That scene where harry is at a game telling his friend how his wife left him, whilst also continuing to participate in a Mexican wave, is brilliant. “Mr Zero knew your wife was getting a divorce before you did?” “Mr Zero knew”.
Ditto the scene in a cafe where she tells him she has had great sex with a guy called Sheldon - the whole thing is fantastically written, down to the discussion about the days of the week underpants.
And that brilliant girls lunch where Carrie Fisher says Meg Ryan is ready to date again so brings her file cards of single men out of her handbag. Then says she mustn’t delay because there is a guy out there who is meant for her, and “if you don’t get him first, somebody else will, and you’ll have to spend the rest of your life knowing that somebody else is married to YOUR husband” 🤣🤣🤣

its fantastic

Y'all call it a Mexican wave? We just can it the wave here.

Onethingatatime23 · 06/11/2023 02:25

I went to see WHMS when I was 14 at the cinema, it was ok. Think I watched it again in my 20s, haven't felt the need to in the last 20 odd years. I prefer The Holiday tbh.

PaminaMozart · 06/11/2023 02:29

Aaaahhhhhh............

Throwhandsupintheair · 06/11/2023 03:20

You’re not wrong OP. Overrated dreck. The orgasm scene is next level cringe too.

MariaLuna · 06/11/2023 03:26

Loved that film.

The orgasm in the cafe was the best ever. "I'll have she's having" LOL

BretonBlue · 06/11/2023 05:05

AIBU to remember it as…

Hang on - are you saying that you watched it in the dim and distant past and we are talking not so much about the actual film but your partial recollection of it?!

RedCoffeeCup · 06/11/2023 05:09

It's brilliant OP. My favourite romcom ever, by miles.

Dita73 · 06/11/2023 05:34

I can’t believe you liked In the Cut. Dreadful pretentious rubbish

MrsJamin · 06/11/2023 06:10

I have probably seen it 10 times or more and have also been to Katz deli to eat pastrami on rye!
I don't know why I love it, the dialogue isn't dumbed down, the female lead isn't just taken in by the man initially and they really do seem like friends first. They seem to fall in love despite not wanting to. Also really like the passing of time thought it, different hairstyles, seasons.

LuditeLil · 06/11/2023 06:16

On the side

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/11/2023 06:27

Oh! I've been looking for a red suede pump!

PermanentTemporary · 06/11/2023 06:29

I like the music and that a lot of the dialogue is quiet. And I love the way it looks. And that It's quite sexy without ever seeing more than a collarbone. And I LOVE Carrie Fisher.

I remember a journalist saying 90% of its lines were ripped off Woody Allen but I've never checked.

The orgasm scene was marketed as a 'win' for Sally which when you think about it is so odd. It's pretty dated.

lollipoprainbow · 06/11/2023 06:32

"The next minute you're singing Surrey with a fringe on top in front of EIRA!!"

One of my favourite films.

RedSuedePump · 06/11/2023 06:35

it’s one of my favourite films - Nora Ephron is such a brilliant writer, the dialogue and the way it’s delivered is really special. i love how it shows mature adults with all their foibles and flaws but still makes them likeable. great supporting characters in Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher (‘you’re right you’re right i know you’re right”). plus stunning NYC locations through the seasons. great kate 80s clothes. it’s festive too. and has a great soundtrack. Billy Crystal being Billy Crystal. And Meg Ryan at the height of her rom com powers. I love it.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 06/11/2023 00:37

To the romcom fans on the thread, please can I heartily recommend Rye Lane to you all? It couldn’t be more different to WHMS but it is the best romcom I’ve seen in years. I loved it.

Me too!

Simplesimonsdog · 06/11/2023 07:24

@PermanentTemporary yes, it’s very reminiscent of Woody Allen, especially Manhattan murder mystery.

tothesea · 06/11/2023 08:07

Thanks for the Rye Lane recommendation @DrMarshaFieldstone it looks great.

SalmonWellington · 06/11/2023 08:07

Can confirm that Rye Lane is delightful.

CesareBorgia · 06/11/2023 08:09

I'm with you, OP. It was okay but never got the big fuss. The orgasm scene was funny and deservedly regarded as classic, but the rest of the film was bland.

smilesup · 06/11/2023 08:12

SheerLucks · 05/11/2023 23:11

I thought it zinged along and Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal are amazing actors in themselves.

But IMO they had zero romantic chemistry, which left a big hole. After the final scene I remember thinking well that was nice, but that there was no way in real life those two would have sparks in the bedroom.

This was the issue for me. The had no spark or sexual chemistry.

Busephalus · 06/11/2023 08:14

Basically you're saying you have superior tastes to the people who like it

Ididivfama · 06/11/2023 08:15

I watched it for the first time a few years ago and was surprised how much I liked it. So many romcoms are awful, tasteless and dated. I could still watch it and enjoy it.

Ididivfama · 06/11/2023 08:19

coveredindoghairs · 06/11/2023 02:14

I've never seen it. Too young when it was new, and then the famous deli scene (which you couldn't escape seeing in some form) was off-putting (imo), but maybe it's time to try it, the next time I'm in the mood for a romcom.

The deli scene felt silly but the overall film is great

LaMarschallin · 06/11/2023 08:38

Mapletreelane

But then I detest Love Actually, so possibly I have a weird film taste compared to most people!

I thought this was the most common 21st century opinion of "Love Actually".
People queue up now to say how much they've never liked it, even when everyone else did etc
Edit: It's not as old as I thought, it seems.
Make that "most common later 21st century opinion etc"

I haven't seen WHMS since it came out and I went to the cinema with some friends. Maybe it's due a rewatch although I remember thinking it seemed very long.
Always assumed the deli scene was to show how easy it is to fake an orgasm in a way a man would believe, which was why it was ridiculously OTT.
(Prepared for people to "wittily" tell me I'm doing sex wrong Grin).

Crikeyalmighty · 06/11/2023 08:53

I love it too, in the same way as I Iove Bridget jones.guess we are all different.

I love woody Allen films as well and for me it kind of has that feel
